(Medium<\/a>)\u00a0To be truly pro-life is to value everyone. People are valuable not because of what we can do but because of what we are: human beings. For pro-lifers, people are not judged by how attractive they are, how wealthy they are, or how useful they are to others. People have inherent worth. This is the core of the pro-life message.<\/p>\n

We live in a culture that does not value the preborn. It also does not value the disabled. In fact, a desire to eliminate disabled people was a driving force behind abortion even before Roe v. Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Before the 1960s, the majority of Americans opposed legalizing abortion. This was clear in opinion polls. But the movement for abortion legalization got an enormous boost from two events: the Sherri Finkbine case in 1962 and the German measles outbreak of 1964.<\/p>\n

Sherri Finkbine was the host of the popular children\u2019s show Romper Room. She was pregnant and suffering from morning sickness and insomnia. To treat her ailments, her husband brought a drug back from overseas \u2014 the drug thalidomide, which had not been approved in America, and gave it to her.<\/p>\n

Months into her pregnancy, Finkbine found out about the terrible birth defects that were caused by this drug, such as missing and misshapen limbs, and other health problems.<\/p>\n

At the time, abortion was legal only to save the life of the mother. In practice, however, hospitals sometimes approved abortions for other reasons. Sherri Finkbine applied for an abortion at a local hospital, and her abortion was approved and scheduled.<\/p>\n

To warn other women about thalidomide, Finkbine gave an interview to a newspaper about her situation. When the story ran, the hospital, fearing bad publicity, canceled the abortion.<\/p>\n

What happened next was a media frenzy. Newspapers publicized how Finkbine, this beloved figure, was being forced to carry a horribly deformed child. She was portrayed as an innocent victim of cruel anti-abortion laws. Abortion-legalization activists used the story to drum up support for abortion.<\/p>\n

After Roe v. Wade<\/em> was decided, lawyer Sarah Weddington, one of the pro-abortion attorneys who argued Roe<\/em>, would say to Finkbine: \u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to meet you. If it hadn\u2019t been for you, my job ten years later would have been much more difficult.\u201d (quoted in Patricia Myers, \u201cShades of Gray.\u201d)<\/p>\n

Finkbine ended up getting her abortion in Sweden. According to Cynthia Gorney, who wrote a book about the history of abortion in America:<\/p>\n

When Sherri Finkbine was asked afterward what the Swedish doctors had said about her abortion, she said they had told her that deformities were present and that \u2018baby\u2019 was not the best description for what she had been carrying. It was better to think of it, Mrs. Finkbine reported the doctors had explained, as a growth. (Articles of Faith: A Frontline History of the Abortion Wars<\/em>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The disabled baby was considered less than human by the doctors who aborted him or her (no sources I found bothered to document the child\u2019s gender.)<\/p>\n

Shortly after the Finkbine case, an epidemic of German measles in 1964\u20131965 led to the birth of disabled children throughout the United States. German measles, otherwise known as rubella, was a relatively mild disease in adults.<\/p>\n

However, pregnant women who contracted it often had babies with disabilities. Babies born to mothers infected with rubella sometimes developed heart defects, deafness, blindness, and intellectual disabilities.<\/p>\n

The connection between rubella and birth defects was discovered in the 1940s by Australian ophthalmologist Norman Gregg, who openly promoted abortion for pregnant women infected with the virus. Leslie J. Reagan, author of Dangerous Pregnancies: Mothers, Disabilities, and Abortion in Modern America<\/em>, states<\/a>:<\/p>\n

German measles was crucial for bringing out the public discussion of abortion and propelling the early abortion rights movement\u2026. [It was] the opening that made it possible for women, and men too, to talk about the validity of this procedure and the necessity of making it legal.<\/em><\/p>\n

Pro-abortion activists capitalized on the fears of pregnant mothers who wanted healthy, normal children. These activists framed abortion as a medical issue, necessary to ensure that babies were not born disabled.<\/p>\n

In this way, abortion supporters used ableism to make abortion more palatable to the public, promoting the claim that it was better for a baby never to be born than to be born with a disability.<\/p>\n

Abortion supporters are still using ableism to promote abortion. An Episcopal priest said that abortion should be legalized in Latin America because of the Zika virus. Since the Zika virus can cause birth defects, she argues, abortion must be legal. If it isn\u2019t, women will be forced to \u201csuffer the consequences of a disabled child with special needs\u201d (Kira Schlesinger Pro-Choice and Christian: Reconciling Faith, Politics, and Justice<\/em>).<\/p>\n

A disabled human being is a \u201cconsequence\u201d in this view. And clearly a consequence to be avoided.<\/p>\n

Today women are expected to have tests to determine if their children will have certain disabilities and are often encouraged to abort if they do. In some cases, it\u2019s said to be in the best interests of the disabled child.<\/p>\n

One article I read recently was about a woman whose child had kidney problems and may have needed a kidney transplant after birth. Rather than let her baby be born, and giving him medical treatment, the woman decided to do what she said was the most \u201chumane\u201d thing for him. She had him dismembered in a late-term D&E (Dilation and Evacuation) abortion.<\/p>\n

In a D&E abortion<\/a>, the abortionist uses forceps to extract the child piece by piece, literally tearing him apart. It is a violent, gruesome procedure. Yet the author described the abortion of her son as an act of kindness.<\/p>\n

Often, though, if we read the actual words of those who abort disabled children, the well-being of the child isn\u2019t really the main concern. In some cases, a disabled child is just too expensive and inconvenient.<\/p>\n

Rayna Rapp, in Testing Women, Testing the Fetus: The Social Impact of Amniocentesis in America<\/em> quotes some parents whose unborn children were being tested for Down Syndrome. They were waiting for their test results to come back. All of them intended to abort if the test was positive.<\/p>\n

One woman said, \u201cI just couldn\u2019t do it, couldn\u2019t be that kind of mother who accepts everything, loves her kid no matter what. What about me? Maybe it\u2019s selfish, I don\u2019t know. But I just didn\u2019t want all those problems in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another said: \u201cIt\u2019s devastating, it\u2019s a waste, all the love that goes into kids like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

A third said: \u201cI think it\u2019s kind of like triage, or like euthanasia. There aren\u2019t enough resources in the world. We\u2019d have to move, to focus our whole family on getting a handicapped kid a better deal\u2026 Why spend $50,000 to save one child?\u201d<\/p>\n

A man said, \u201cI\u2019m sorry to say I couldn\u2019t think about raising a child with Down\u2019s. I\u2019m something of a perfectionist. I want the best for my child. I\u2019ve worked hard, I went to Cornell University, I\u2019d want that for my child. I\u2019d want to teach him things he couldn\u2019t absorb. I\u2019m sorry I can\u2019t be more accepting, but I\u2019m clear I wouldn\u2019t want to continue the pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another parent said, \u201cIf he can\u2019t grow up to have a shot at becoming the president, we don\u2019t want him.\u201d<\/p>\n

These parents aren\u2019t aborting for the sake of their babies. They simply don\u2019t want disabled children. They see these children as a \u201cwaste\u201d, a burden, and an expense they don\u2019t want.<\/p>\n

They have high standards for their children. Since most children actually don\u2019t grow up to become president or even go to Cornell, one wonders if these parents will be deeply disappointed in the children they do have and whether these children will have emotional scars as a result.<\/p>\n

In a sense, these parents are acting like consumers- they want a baby, but they only want a baby if the baby will meet certain standards. A baby that doesn\u2019t meet their standards is a defective product they don\u2019t want.<\/p>\n

Of course, giving birth a healthy, non-disabled child doesn\u2019t mean a parent will always have a healthy, non-disabled child. Children get into accidents and develop illnesses. Any parent can end up with a disabled child. There are no guarantees.<\/p>\n

The very conditional nature of the love these parents have for their children, based on the child\u2019s potential for achievement, doesn\u2019t create an environment that is conducive to raising emotionally healthy offspring.<\/p>\n

Ableism helped pave the way for legalized abortion in the United States. And it continues to be a factor in some abortions. As long as people fear giving birth to a disabled child, they will want abortion to prevent it from happening.<\/p>\n
