margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/pro-life-demonstration-held-against-extreme-abortion-legislation-in-new-zealand\/\">Right to Life UK<\/a>)\u00a0Over 1,000 people took part in a pro-life demonstration in New Zealand against the extreme abortion legislation passed by the Labour Government earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners participating in the Christchurch March for Life carried signs reading <em>\u201cBoth Lives Matter\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201cLove them Both\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FRTLNewZealand%2Fvideos%2F311220589971544%2F&amp;show_text=1&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"487\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/center>Earlier this year, New Zealand MPs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.nz\/en\/pb\/bills-and-laws\/bills-digests\/document\/52PLLaw25991\/abortion-legislation-bill-2019-bills-digest-2599\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted<\/a> to introduce the most severe abortion law in the world by 68 votes to 51.<\/p>\n<p>The new law <a href=\"https:\/\/downright.org.nz\/#the-law-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scraps<\/a> the previous 20-week limit and will allow terminations <a href=\"https:\/\/bothlivesmatter.org.nz\/the-law-in-detail\/#About-section1-up-to-birth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on-demand, for any reason, up to birth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, there is now <a href=\"https:\/\/bothlivesmatter.org.nz\/the-law-in-detail\/#About-section5-no-dr-requirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no requirement<\/a> doctors must be involved with an abortion \u2018procedure\u2019 and MPs \u2013 including Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/nz-pm-jacinda-ardern-votes-to-leave-babies-born-alive-after-abortions-to-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted against<\/a> an amendment requiring medical care for babies born alive after a \u2018failed\u2019 termination.<\/p>\n<p>The new law has <a href=\"https:\/\/bothlivesmatter.org.nz\/the-law-in-detail\/#About-section1-up-to-birth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also legalised<\/a> sex-selective abortion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New proposals could deny pregnant women practical and emotional support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, just four-months after introducing the extreme abortion law, a New Zealand Labour MP has introduced a Bill to make it even worse.<\/p>\n<p>Labour MP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labour.org.nz\/louisawall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Louisa Wall<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.nz\/en\/pb\/bills-and-laws\/bills-proposed-laws\/document\/BILL_99649\/contraception-sterilisation-and-abortion-safe-areas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion (Safe Areas) Amendment Bill<\/a> would deny women practical and emotional support outside abortion clinics.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal states this will be done through the creation of so-called \u201csafe areas\u201d up to 150 metres from any part of an abortion facility, with a fine of up to $1,000 for anyone deemed to be breaking the rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-zealand-euthanasia-assisted-suicide\/\">Prominent New Zealand politician pushes for legalization of euthanasia<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>New Zealanders ignored<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In light of <a href=\"https:\/\/bothlivesmatter.org.nz\/#public-opinion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extremely low public support<\/a> and falling support from MPs, Jacinda Ardern\u2019s Government rushed the final stages of the Bill\u2019s progress through Parliament while politicians, the media and the rest of the country were distracted dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>This included progressing the final sitting of the committee stage and the Bill\u2019s third and final reading through parliament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.nz\/en\/pb\/hansard-debates\/rhr\/combined\/HansD_20200318_20200318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on the same day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Polling conducted by Curia Research, <a href=\"https:\/\/bothlivesmatter.org.nz\/#public-opinion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revealed<\/a> strong opposition to the new law by the public in New Zealand, and in particular by women.<\/p>\n<p>Only 2% of women said they support abortion being available on-demand right up to birth. Meanwhile,\u00a0 93% of women opposed sex-selective abortion being legal and 94% of women supported the previous legal standards for abortion providers and premises.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, over 40,000 New Zealanders signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.nz\/en\/pb\/petitions\/document\/PET_97570\/petition-of-pamela-mcilwraith-referendum-on-abortion-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">petition<\/a> urging the Government to hold a referendum, giving citizens an opportunity to repeal the extreme law.<\/p>\n<p>To put this in perspective, if New Zealand had the same population as the UK, and the same proportion of the population signed the petition, this would equate to well over 500,000 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>The petition\u2019s author, Pamela McIlwraith, has said: <em>\u201cIn my view the abortion legislation was rushed through Parliament while the entire country was distracted with COVID-19.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI think there needs to be a referendum so the people can have their say\u2014MPs should not be able to vote against giving the people their say in such important matters, especially a law legalising full term abortion.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern under fire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the election, New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/new-zealand-pm-criticised-for-supporting-abortion-up-to-birth-as-election-race-heats-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticised<\/a> by an MP for supporting the introduction of extreme abortion legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to recent comments Ardern made that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/national\/programmes\/morningreport\/audio\/2018756669\/nz-could-be-doing-more-on-infant-mortality-prime-minister\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Zealand could be doing more to improve infant mortality<\/a>, Whanganui MP Harete Hipango <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HareteHipangoMP\/posts\/2702515900075240\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> the <em>\u201chypocrisy is astounding,\u201d<\/em>given the Prime Minister supported the Abortion Legislation Bill.<\/p>\n<p>In a Facebook post last month, Hipango stated, <em>\u201cThis recent stance by the PM is rank and riles me as a woman who is a mother and has also advocated for children\u2019s welfare all my professional working life as a lawyer.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With the 2020 election just several weeks away, Labour MP and Justice Minister Andrew Little leapt to Jacinda\u2019s defence and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/422239\/national-mps-pro-life-groups-say-abortion-law-too-ill-defined\">said<\/a> there was <em>\u201cno such thing as full-term abortion, people who say that are idiots.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, National list party MP Agnes Loheni, who was on the select committee for the abortion legislation, said the legislation \u201cdefinitely\u201d supports abortion up to birth.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat is written in our legislation definitely supports that you could have an abortion post 20 weeks up to birth. If you look at the words yourself \u2013 there are no hoops to jump through because it is so broad and ill-defined. In my view the unborn child now is the equivalent of having an appendix removed,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that many MP\u2019s who were for the bill changed their vote on the third reading because they felt uncomfortable with the <em>\u201cloose terms around the criteria for late term abortions\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Hipango was also supported in her comments against the Labour Prime Minister by fellow National MP, Simon O\u2019Connor.
