The term “pregnancy” is trending on Twitter following a tweet<\/a>\u00a0from Senator Ted Cruz which stated, “Pregnancy is not a life-threatening illness, and the abortion pill does not cure or prevent any disease. Make no mistake, Mifeprex is a dangerous pill.” Pro-abortion media has seized upon his remarks, citing biased sources in an attempt to disprove Cruz, who just this week led a call for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban the abortion pill<\/a>, mifepristone (brand name Mifeprex), from the U.S. market.<\/p>\n

Here are the facts, and they’re not in the media’s favor.<\/p>\n

CBS News reporter uses false “abortion is safer than childbirth” claim<\/strong><\/p>\n

CBS News reporter Kate Smith previously\u00a0claimed<\/a> that the phrase\u00a0late-term abortion<\/em>\u00a0is \u201cnon-medical\u201d and \u201cviolent rhetoric.\u201d Smith also conducted a softball interview<\/a> with Planned Parenthood’s recently-appointed president, who misleadingly stated that abortions only account for three percent<\/a> of Planned Parenthood’s services, a claim that was\u00a0debunked<\/a>\u00a0by the Washington Post\u00a0years<\/em> ago.<\/p>\n

In response to Senator Cruz, Smith tweeted<\/a>: “This is why pregnancy is trending on Twitter today. Here’s the risk of death for both abortion vs pregnancy: –> Abortion: less than 0.6 per 100,000 –> Pregnancy: 7.1 for per 100,000 Of course pregnancy isn’t a disease, but for some it’s a life threatening condition.”<\/p>\n

Dr. Michael New, a Charlotte Lozier Institute Associate Scholar<\/a>, publicly accused<\/a> the CBS News reporter of “comparing apples to oranges.”\u00a0Dr. New<\/a>\u00a0previously labeled the claim that abortion is safer than childbirth “misleading for several reasons,” adding,\u00a0“First, the CDC and other health organizations invest few resources in tracking abortion-related deaths. Second, many of the cited studies end their analysis shortly after the birth or abortion takes place.”<\/p>\n

On Twitter<\/a> Dr. New replied to Smith, stating, “Separate studies using long-term public health data from California and Finland show that abortion is associated with a higher death rate than childbirth.”<\/p>\n

While Smith claimed that the risk of death from abortion was just 0.6 per 100,000 women, a study from Finland found<\/a>, “The age-adjusted mortality rate for women during pregnancy and within 1 year of pregnancy termination was 36.7 deaths per 100,000 pregnancies.”<\/p>\n

A study that reviewed\u00a0California Medicaid records for 173,279 women who compared induced abortions to deliveries\u00a0concluded<\/a> that “[h]igher death rates associated with abortion persist over time and across socioeconomic boundaries. This may be explained by self-destructive tendencies, depression, and other unhealthy behavior aggravated by the abortion experience.”<\/p>\n

A 2012 study which used\u00a0comprehensive public-health long-term data from Denmark\u00a0to analyze mortality rates for nearly half a million women<\/strong>\u00a0found “very strong evidence that giving birth is in fact safer than obtaining an abortion,” according to a review<\/a> of the findings by Dr. New.<\/p>\n

Newsweek uses biased sources in attempt to claim abortion is safe<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to CBS News, Newsweek also pounced on Senator Cruz with an extremely biased article<\/a>\u00a0titled, “Ted Cruz Faces Backlash for FDA Abortion Letter Stating Pregnancy Is ‘Not Life Threatening.’ As the outlet did previously when publishing<\/a> false claims about Live Action, Newsweek turned to abortion-biased sources.<\/p>\n

Senator Cruz quickly called out Newsweek, tweeting<\/a>, “Want to know how fake news happens? This is a textbook example. Newsweek reports \u201cCruz has faced a backlash\u201d for my FDA letter defending women & unborn children. Their evidence? 1 tweet from a Dem candidate & 3 quotes from pro-abortion lobbyists. Voila!”<\/p>\n

Newsweek cited\u00a0a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM)\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0from 2018, claiming abortion is safe and effective. Newsweek claimed, “the risk of death subsequent to a legal abortion (0.7 per 100,000) is a small fraction of that for childbirth (8.8 per 100,000).”<\/p>\n

But this report was actually\u00a0sponsored in part<\/a>\u00a0by foundations with possible profit motives (a massive conflict of interest), namely\u00a0Warren Buffett<\/a>\u00a0(the Buffett Foundation) and the\u00a0Packard Foundation<\/a>. Packard\u00a0helped to finance the startup of the abortion pill manufacturer,\u00a0Danco Laboratories<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Newsweek also cited<\/a> a pro-abortion World Health Organization (WHO) statistic on worldwide maternal mortality,<\/em> which doesn’t even list the United States in its top 15 countries of concern.<\/p>\n

Newsweek also quoted as its expert Dr. Meera Shah, who has been an Associate Medical Director of a Planned Parenthood facility in New York as well as a Fellow with the Physicians for Reproductive Health (PRH).\u00a0\u00a0Live Action News previously<\/a>\u00a0noted that PRH\u2019s\u00a0stated mission<\/a>\u00a0includes\u00a0advocating<\/a>\u00a0for abortion and\u00a0abortion providers<\/a>. In addition,\u00a0PRH is funded by the original funders of abortion pill manufacturer,\u00a0Danco<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0namely, the\u00a0Packard Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and the Soros-funded\u00a0Open Society Foundations<\/a>. Soros’ Open Society also happens to\u00a0fund<\/a>\u00a0many news media outlets.<\/p>\n

Data on abortion complications and maternal mortality in the U.S. are “incomplete” and “highly suspect”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Few states voluntarily<\/a> report abortion-related complications, and\u00a0there are no federal requirements<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to report either abortion-related complications or deaths.<\/p>\n

When a woman’s death resulting from abortion is documented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this death is also included in total maternal mortality<\/em> (pregnancy-related) death statistics. The CDC\u00a0defines<\/a>\u00a0a maternal death as \u201cthe death of a woman while pregnant\u00a0or\u00a0within 1 year of the end of a pregnancy<\/strong>\u2026.”<\/p>\n

The vast majority of abortions are committed in the first trimester of pregnancy. Comparing this timeframe with that of a pregnancy carried to term plus one year after<\/em> is disengenuous at best.<\/p>\n

In 2019<\/a>,\u00a0Washington Post fact checker<\/a> Glenn Kessler was critical of “anyone trying to tie a link between abortion laws and mortality rates.\u201d He also pointed out,\u00a0\u201c[S]ince 2007 the United States hasn\u2019t had an official annual count of pregnancy-related fatalities, or even an official maternal mortality rate.”<\/p>\n

According to Kessler, “ProPublica has documented<\/a>\u00a0[that] maternal mortality statistics in the United States are incomplete and highly suspect, prone to undercounting and overcounting. Since 2003, states have added a checkbox to death certificates, asking whether a person was pregnant when they died or had been in the previous year. But the data collection is not consistent, and the addition of a checkbox appears to have resulted in many false positives.”<\/p>\n

Pregnancy is not an illness<\/strong><\/p>\n

Smith followed up her Twitter thread by adding, “The point of this is to say that pregnancy isn’t a life-threatening condition… until it is. For the families of people who’ve died from a pregnancy, it’s cruel to imply otherwise. Maternal mortality is real, much worse for patients of color, and woefully under-researched.\u00a0It depresses me to think that saying that is somehow controversial.”<\/p>\n

In response, Live Action founder and President Lila Rose tweeted<\/a> in part, “A woman should never be told to kill her child to avoid risk. Doctors can and must care for BOTH patients – a mother and her preborn child. Stop the vicious fear mongering.”<\/p>\n

There is never a reason to violently and deliberately<\/em> take the life of a preborn child in an abortion to save the life of his or her mother. Tragically, women do die from legal abortion – more than media outlets like Newsweek and CBS are willing to report.<\/p>\n

Abortion is not a life-saving act. Every abortion ends the life of a developing human being.<\/p>\n
