{"id":229975,"date":"2020-08-31T08:27:37","date_gmt":"2020-08-31T13:27:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=229975"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:35:54","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T02:35:54","slug":"inspiration-parents-choose-life-baby-organs-outside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/inspiration-parents-choose-life-baby-organs-outside\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;A true inspiration&#8217;: Parents choose life for baby girl born with organs outside her body"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/girl-born-with-vital-organs-outside-body-is-flourishing-after-parents-refused-abortion\/\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) A two-year-old from Cambridge born with her stomach, liver and bowel on the outside of her body continues to defy the odds after her parents rejected advice from doctors to have an abortion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jupiterx-post-content clearfix\">\n<p>Doctors did not expect Laurel Phizacklea, who was born with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gosh.nhs.uk\/conditions-and-treatments\/conditions-we-treat\/exomphalos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">major exomphalos<\/a> \u2013 a condition which occurs when the baby\u2019s abdominal wall does not form during pregnancy \u2013 to survive birth.<\/p>\n<p>They advised her parents, Kelly and Sean, to consider abortion following a 12-week scan. But they refused, wanting to give their daughter a chance at life, now Laurel continues to defy expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two years, skin has formed around the organs, and Laurel can eat, drink and go to the toilet like any other toddler.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of 2021, the little fighter should be able to have corrective surgery placing her vital organs back inside her body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FRightToLifeUK%2Fposts%2F3545885418763912&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=552&amp;height=576&amp;appId\" width=\"552\" height=\"576\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blindsided<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kelly and Sean were over the moon when they discovered they were expecting their first child in October 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The couple excitedly attended their 12-week scan but were blindsided when doctors said something was wrong and offered them a termination.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors explained that their unborn baby had exomphalos.<\/p>\n<p>Early in all pregnancies, the intestine develops inside the umbilical cord and then usually moves inside the abdomen a few weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>In exomphalos, the intestines \u2013 and in this case the stomach, liver and bowel \u2013 remain inside the umbilical cord but outside the abdomen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018It\u2019s OK, you can try again\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Doctors were also determined that Laurel had a spinal abornomality \u2013 and advised Kelly and Sean to have an abortion.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe couldn\u2019t quite believe what we were hearing when they offered us an abortion,\u201d<\/em> Kelly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-8609185\/Meet-two-year-old-toddler-organs-OUTSIDE-body.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told the Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPeople kept saying: \u2018It\u2019s OK, you can try again\u2019 \u2013 but I didn\u2019t want another baby.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI was so in love with this baby and we knew we would do everything we could for her.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018From that moment on we knew she was a fighter\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kelly continued with her pregnancy and went for scans every two weeks to monitor the progress of her unborn baby.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks before Laurel\u2019s birth, doctors discovered the exomphalos had doubled in size \u2013 prompting medics to take both Kelly and Sean aside to tell them their daughter would not survive birth.<\/p>\n<p>However, on June 6th 2018, Laurel let out a cry after being delivered by caesarean section.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen we heard her cry out I couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d<\/em> Kelly said. <em>\u201cBoth Sean and I just burst into tears.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe knew it was far from the end of it \u2013 but to hear her cry was a huge relief and from that moment we knew she was a fighter.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Laurel was born weighing a healthy 7lb 5oz (3.3kg), and put straight on a ventilator before being transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit.<\/p>\n<p>After seven hours, Kelly and Sean were finally able to meet their daughter properly for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHer tummy was swaddled in bandages,\u201d<\/em> Kelly said. <em>\u201cWe knew to expect it to look different \u2013 so we weren\u2019t scared at all.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kelly and Sean were provided with a room at the hospital by the Sick Children\u2019s Trust so they could be with their daughter during her three and a half month stay in Addenbrookes Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors were worried that Laurel wouldn\u2019t be able to breathe on her own, as it is common in exomphalos cases for the lungs not to have formed properly \u2013 but again Laurel defied the odds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/baby-half-heart-defies-odds\/\">Baby with half a heart defies odds after doctors refuse to help him<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A bright future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, the two-year-old is flourishing at home as she awaits corrective surgery to have her organs internalised at the beginning of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Laurel will undergo the operation at King\u2019s College Hospital, London.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly said: <em>\u201cIt is a scary thought, and there are definitely concerns.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBut Laurel has already been through so much, and I am sure she will continue to take everything in her stride.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although it will be a relief for both Kelly and Sean when they don\u2019t have to worry about their daughter\u2019s every move, they do worry that it will cause a certain amount of separation anxiety for the tot.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShe loves her tummy so much,\u201d<\/em> explained Kelly. <em>\u201cShe rubs it in the bath when I take the dressing off to wash her and says \u2018ah tummy\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s very cute, and she couldn\u2019t be prouder of it. But I do worry about how she\u2019ll react when it\u2019s not there anymore.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She added: <em>\u201cI don\u2019t know how we remained positive throughout my pregnancy with Laurel. It really looked as if she wouldn\u2019t survive birth, but Sean and I never gave up hope and she has done us so proud.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHer pouch of organs on her tummy is a part of her and she doesn\u2019t let it get her down.
