{"id":229412,"date":"2020-08-28T18:15:26","date_gmt":"2020-08-28T23:15:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=229412"},"modified":"2020-08-27T23:04:36","modified_gmt":"2020-08-28T04:04:36","slug":"former-planned-parenthood-employees-accuse-racism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-employees-accuse-racism\/","title":{"rendered":"More former Planned Parenthood employees come forward with accusations of racism"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Mere weeks after hundreds of Planned Parenthood of Greater New York staffers publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-systemic-racism-white-supremacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> the century-old eugenics-founded organization of systemic racism, Planned Parenthood staffers from multiple other affiliates have exposed the corporation&#8217;s alleged &#8220;open racism,&#8221; &#8220;segregated&#8221; offices, and overall unequal treatment of Black and minority employees in an expos\u00e9 at Buzzfeed News.<\/p>\n<p>For years, Planned Parenthood ignored and downplayed the racist beliefs of its founder, Margaret Sanger, lauding her as a reproductive rights heroine. The organization has had ample time to disavow Sanger, and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-reckoning-racist-history\/\">did not even attempt do so<\/a> until very recently.<\/p>\n<p>According to Buzzfeed writer Ema O&#8217;Connor, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/amphtml\/emaoconnor\/employees-calling-out-reproductive-rights-groups\">most recent accusations<\/a> against Planned Parenthood\u00a0\u2014 as well as other &#8220;reproductive rights&#8221; organizations \u2014 come from &#8220;26 employees at Planned Parenthood affiliates and the national office of NARAL, as well as 16 employees of other reproductive rights organizations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[P]eople of color, and especially Black people, were often stuck in lower-paying administrative roles, causing high turnover rates among staff of color and preventing nonwhite employees from rising to positions of power within the organizations,&#8221; reported O&#8217;Connor, who also correctly noted that &#8220;NARAL and Planned Parenthood are two of the most powerful reproductive rights groups in the US.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have never been treated so horribly in my life as I was at Planned Parenthood,\u201d one staffer told Buzzfeed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9H_7Y80D_Cg\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Current and former staffers accused\u00a0Planned Parenthood of\u00a0&#8220;open racism&#8221; and preferential treatment of white employees over staffers of color. They alleged that they had been &#8220;berated and belittled by their bosses&#8221; while their white counterparts were not treated in that manner. They also claimed they were held back from promotions and were &#8220;unable to move up within the organization, while their white colleagues were promoted,&#8221; Buzzfeed reported.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that although Buzzfeed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/amphtml\/emaoconnor\/employees-calling-out-reproductive-rights-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> to have corroborating evidence of these claims, the outlet did not publish this evidence, nor did it name many of the staffers, who reportedly &#8220;fear[ed] giving ammunition to abortion opponents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Buzzfeed, while the National Planned Parenthood office now has a Black female president, Buzzfeed claimed that CEOs in just eight of Planned Parenthood\u2019s 49 state-level affiliates are people of color.<\/p>\n<p>Charges levied against Planned Parenthood included current and former employees from &#8220;Planned Parenthood affiliates in Western Pennsylvania, the Great Plains, Washington, DC, and Illinois described race-based pay disparities and &#8216;toxic&#8217; work environments for employees of color,&#8221; O&#8217;Connor wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-systemic-racism-white-supremacy\/\">Planned Parenthood employees describe corporation\u2019s \u2018systemic racism\u2019 and \u2018white supremacy\u2019 problem<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition, Buzzfeed reported that &#8220;[t]wo former employees of Planned Parenthood affiliates \u2014 one in Pittsburgh, and the other in Washington, DC \u2014 sent BuzzFeed News copies of their resignation letters, in which they detailed instances of racial ignorance, open racism, and a culture that prevented them from moving up professionally while their white colleagues were promoted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlanned Parenthood advertises that it exists as a safe space to protect and support women, especially women of color, but from my experiences I can confidently say that it does not practice what it preaches,\u201d\u00a0 the Pittsburgh employee wrote in a resignation letter provided to Buzzfeed.<\/p>\n<p>The former employee accused Planned Parenthood\u00a0management of being &#8220;comfortable and unaccountable while employees suffer and go unheard.\u201d She and a separate former staffer told Buzzfeed, &#8220;the few employees of color were frequently undermined while their white colleagues were promoted around them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A former Black employee of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC\u00a0(PPMW), told Buzzfeed that she &#8220;was treated noticeably differently from her non-Black colleagues&#8221; and had been &#8220;repeatedly singled out, berated, and even screamed at by a supervisor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Connor noted:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Despite her high-ranking role, she said she was constantly told to serve board members food, clean up after meetings, organize people\u2019s parking permits, and other assistant-level work. She and two other Black women who worked at the DC affiliate around the same time said their white colleagues would constantly use racially charged terms like \u201caggressive,\u201d \u201cdomineering,\u201d and \u201cthreatening\u201d to describe another Black male employee; they found him mild mannered and kind.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve worked at plenty of nonprofits, and I have never been treated so horribly in my life as I was at Planned Parenthood, to the point where I grew very depressed, had a lot of anxiety, and cried in the bathroom almost every day,\u201d the former PPMW staffer told Buzzfeed.<\/p>\n<p>In total, four PPMW staffers alleged that Planned Parenthood&#8217;s office was segregated, with &#8220;the few women of color all sitting at the same row of desks.&#8221; Two PPMW staffers alleged to Buzzfeed that &#8220;that their colleagues, including their white manager, would sometimes refer to the Black and Latinx women in that row as the \u201cbarrio\u201d or the \u201cghetto girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A statement sent to Buzzfeed by a PPMW spokesperson read in part, &#8220;We know, of course, that PPMW is not immune to the systemic racism that permeates our society, and over the past several years we have prioritized our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In response to the Buzzfeed piece, former Planned Parenthood staffers unloaded on Twitter. One alleged former Planned Parenthood staffer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kate_Kelly_Esq\/status\/1297922301409853441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>, &#8220;This tracks w my experience working at Planned Parenthood. Deep, long-standing problems w treatment (dehumanization) of employees in general &amp; POC employees in particular. I was a shell of myself while trying to survive PPFA &amp; the political organizing team. I was so extremely depressed &amp; everyone I met saw it in me. I took a huge pay cut &amp; returned to my old job just to get out and still feed myself and pay rent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another tweet from the same user\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Amber_Abundance\/status\/1298412185538846720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read<\/a>, &#8220;<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">&#8230; I worked at <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1n1174f r-1loqt21 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPact\">@PPact\u00a0<\/a><\/span>on the\u00a0<span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1n1174f r-1loqt21 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPGenAction\">@PPGenAction<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>team and it was the most racist and toxic work environment I have ever experienced in my life&#8230;\u201cDiversity\u201d &amp; a few Black women in positions of power will never be enough for an org that has built their entire existence on the oppression of Black and Brown folks. In 2018, the New York Times\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-planned-parenthood-discriminated-pregnant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exposed<\/a> the organization\u2019s abysmal treatment and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-dark-pregnancy-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discrimination<\/a> against its pregnant employees.<\/p>\n<p>Since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/2000-20-million-abortions-declining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2000<\/a>, Planned Parenthood has committed over 5.6 million abortions while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-40-percent-abortion-110-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accruing<\/a>\u00a0over $1.5 billion in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/health-abortion-profits-planned-parenthood\/\">excess revenue<\/a>.
