But today, the coffee shop is open, serving food and drinks, and is staffed by employees with various disabilities \u2014 some are blind, some have Down syndrome, some are autistic, and so on. \u201cThis helps to break the stereotype that people with different abilities can\u2019t do anything they want and that they can\u2019t support themselves,\u201d manager Meredith Molseed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusleader.com\/story\/news\/business-journal\/2020\/08\/17\/coffee-shop-brews-inclusion-acceptance-first-sioux-falls-shop-run-special-needs-staff\/5598105002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Argus Leader<\/a>. \u201cIf you give people a chance to do what they want, anything is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-jersey-restaurant-train-employ-adults-disabilities\/\">\u2018No limits\u2019: New Jersey restaurant to train and employ adults with disabilities<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Molseed&#8217;s own personal experiences influenced her views on disability; her aunt had learning delays, so she grew up around people with disabilities and saw them as a normal part of life. But she knows not everyone had the same experience, and grew into adults who are not as accepting of people with disabilities. She hopes Yakkity Yak changes that. \u201cThere\u2019s just a stigma that they can\u2019t do anything or can\u2019t do it without help,\u201d she said. \u201cBut the amount of independence they have here is unreal. They\u2019re not seen as a person with different abilities. From <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/indianapolis-doggy-daycare-people-disabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doggy daycares<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/contribute-people-disabilities-bakery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bakeries<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/blake-texas-business-down-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snow cones<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/man-down-syndrome-entrepreneur-year-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">socks<\/a>, more and more people in the disability community are taking control of their futures. Not only does it give them the chance to have a job, it proves that people with disabilities are more capable than many people view them to be.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term, Luke is hoping to expand on Yakkity Yak&#8217;s inclusive environment to create more opportunities for people with disabilities, such as playgrounds and programs in a local gymnastics program that will bring neurotypical children and those with disabilities together on a regular basis. \u201cWe made a point going forward that we\u2019ll build this building and provide something to show people that it\u2019s not a disability \u2014 these people have abilities, and they can find a way to flourish and a way to feel part of something even when society has taught them otherwise,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusleader.com\/story\/news\/business-journal\/2020\/08\/17\/coffee-shop-brews-inclusion-acceptance-first-sioux-falls-shop-run-special-needs-staff\/5598105002\/\">said<\/a>, adding, &#8220;We hear about change and acceptance and inclusion, but we struggle to find out where that can happen.
