{"id":228515,"date":"2020-08-06T16:30:43","date_gmt":"2020-08-06T21:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=228515"},"modified":"2020-08-06T16:32:21","modified_gmt":"2020-08-06T21:32:21","slug":"majority-nih-advisory-aborted-children-pro-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/majority-nih-advisory-aborted-children-pro-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-life members dominate NIH board examining ethics of research using aborted children"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/osp.od.nih.gov\/biotechnology\/nih-human-fetal-tissue-research-ethics-advisory-board\/#members\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">named<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the members of an advisory board which will examine the ethics of research using the remains of aborted children, most commonly referred to as &#8220;fetal tissue research.&#8221; Last June, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/breaking-trump-hhs-ends-another-humanized-mice-contract-pledges-new-fetal-tissue-safeguards\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it had canceled a contract which used taxpayer dollars to fund this type of research. The advisory board was established by HHS Secretary Alex Azar to review any contract proposals involving the remains of aborted children to determine their eligibility for HHS funding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The board is expected to submit their findings to Azar no later than August 18. Their recommendations will also be sent to the Senate Committee on Health Education, Labor and Pensions, and the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eleven of the 15 board members are known to <em>oppose<\/em>\u00a0the use of aborted fetal remains for research. Many in the pro-life movement are hopeful that the advisory board\u2019s recommendations can advance ethical alternatives to research that treats preborn lives like scientific commodities. Some of those board members, as listed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/members-of-nih-human-fetal-tissue-research-ethics-advisory-board-revealed\">Life Site News<\/a>, are\u00a0Dr. Maureen Condic, an associate professor in neurobiology and anatomy, Dr.\u00a0David Prentice, vice president and research director at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, and OB\/GYN Dr. Ingrid Skop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The public submitted written comments, and five oral presentations were heard by the board before closed door sessions began. According to Life Site News,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/members-of-nih-human-fetal-tissue-research-ethics-advisory-board-revealed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Robin Alta Charo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a law and bioethics professor at the University of Wisconsin, argued in favor of research utilizing aborted children.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlmost every American has benefitted from the use of this tissue in the form of vaccines for polio, chicken pox, and rubella and research curing blindness and cancer,\u201d Alta Charo said. \u201cThrowing up barriers will only limit our hope for curing devastating diseases and make innocent Americans collateral damage in the abortion wars.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/undercover-planned-parenthood-investigator-market-fetal-tissue\/\">Undercover Planned Parenthood investigator: \u2018What I saw was a market for fetal tissue\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, presenters Dr. James Sherley and Dr. Maria Feeney refuted the necessity of fetal tissue research. Sherley is the founder of Asymmetrex, an adult stem cell research firm. Both he and Feeney are associate scholars at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/use-of-aborted-fetal-tissue-questions-answers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pro-life research group that has published content about ethical alternatives to using the bodies of aborted children in research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sherley noted how research with aborted body parts is often \u201ccontributory to motivating elective abortions.\u201d He referred to this as \u201cethical misconduct\u201d that should \u201cnot be funded by the U.S. government or allowed by a private agency either.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The board will be conducting their review as the coronavirus (COVID-19) reignites debates regarding fetal tissue treatment research. In April, President Trump was urged by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/130-congressmen-urge-trump-to-keep-ban-on-aborted-fetal-tissue-research-in-race-for-covid-19-cure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">130 members<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Congress to uphold the \u201ccurrent fetal tissue research policy and to redirect funds toward ethical, successful alternatives to combat COVID-19.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/nih-approves-70-new-human-embryonic-stem-cell-lines-for-use-in-federally-funded-research\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NIH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approved 70 new embryonic stem cell lines for federally funded research last month. However, the HHS policy from last June is meant to exclude projects that use embryonic stem cells or cell lines for research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Feeney told the advisory board, \u201cHistory is repeating itself as we exploit one group of human beings for the benefit of another group. This advisory board can choose to be at the forefront of promoting non-controversial tissue and cell sources. Science has only scratched the surface of what is possible with induced pluripotent stem cells.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a
