Based on facts and figures from sources such as Planned Parenthood, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and the University of Calfornia San Francisco, Live Action estimates that the abortion industry is grossing nearly $200 million annually in abortion pill sales\u00a0\u2014 twice as much money as initially projected<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 with Planned Parenthood alone taking in approximately half of the sales.<\/p>\n

The cost of these abortion pills \u2014 which consist of mifepristone (brand name Mifeprex) and misoprostol, averages under $100. However, they are sold to abortion clients at nearly six times<\/em>\u00a0the cost. There is too little involvement of abortion providers in the abortion pill process to account for such a sizable markup. What previously passed as \u2018abortion care\u2019 has since been reduced to little more than a “drive-thru” abortion pill service while cost to abortion clients remained almost identical to that of a surgical abortion.<\/p>\n

Abortion pill cost to providers<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to a\u00a0slide presentation<\/a>\u00a0from Jess Beaman, MD, MPH (shown below)\u00a0on file at a\u00a0University of California San Francisco (UCSF) course website<\/a>,\u00a0Mifeprex costs providers between $80 to $100 to purchase from Danco and even less ($50) from the generic GenBioPro<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Misoprostol, the second drug in the abortion pill regimen, is estimated at a cost of about $10.\u00a0But according to a Medicaid coding index published<\/a>\u00a0by ReproductiveAccess.org, if the taxpayer funds misoprostol, the cost could be reduced to approximately $1. The index\u00a0states in part, “The cost of misoprostol is around 60 cents per pill… (For example, the cost in NYC is $1\/pill.)” The website<\/a> notes that discounts to providers are also available from the National Abortion Federation (NAF) through NAF’s group purchasing program.<\/p>\n
