A woman discovered the baby and began yelling for help, which is when Tamara Austin, who heard the woman from her apartment, stepped in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She said she found it in a dumpster across the street,&#8221; Austin told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkyt.com\/2020\/07\/17\/woman-describes-moments-after-newborn-was-found-in-nc-trash-can\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WKYT<\/a>. &#8220;She was on the phone with 911 when I came out. The baby was breathing. He was obviously a newborn, very recent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Austin and the other woman worked with dispatchers to provide the baby boy with any help and comfort they could as they waited for paramedics to arrive. &#8220;He still had his umbilical cord around his neck,&#8221; said Austin. &#8220;The 911 operator told us to take it from around his neck, which it wasn&#8217;t tight, and I just held him and cleared his airways with a towel and I just held him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/safe-haven-baby-girl-saved\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baby girl saved by Safe Haven Baby Box the first month it was installed<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Austin began praying and the other woman began singing &#8220;Jesus Loves Me&#8221; to the boy. Austin told the baby that &#8220;someone here wants you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was praying and talking to him,&#8221; she said through tears. &#8220;I said, &#8216;Hang in there, little man, we have help coming for you, and God has a purpose for you.&#8217; He actually grabbed my pinky finger when I said that. So, that was very heartwarming to say the least.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">UPDATE: Drs. say the newborn found earlier today is healthy and doing well.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Wilmington Police (@WilmingtonPD) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WilmingtonPD\/status\/1283906206315274241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>At about 7:30 that evening, the Wilmington Police Department tweeted that the baby is healthy and is doing well.<\/p>\n<p>As with many states, North Carolina has a safe haven law. Parents can surrender an infant under seven days old to a designated safe haven location with no questions asked and no penalty or arrest. Designated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncmedboard.org\/resources-information\/professional-resources\/publications\/forum-newsletter\/article\/save_a_life_know_the_facts_about_north_carolinas_safe_haven_law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">locations<\/a> include hospitals, health departments, community health centers, police and sheriff departments, social services departments, and fire or emergency stations.<\/p>\n<p>Parents can contact the 24 hour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalsafehavenalliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Safe Haven Alliance<\/a> Crisis Hotline at 1-888-510-BABY or text SAFEHAVEN to 313131 if they are unable to care for their newborn child.
