The Supreme Court recently<\/a> ruled that the United States government can limit funding to international organizations based on their policy positions because these groups, even when connected to US organizations, do not have the protection of the First Amendment. The history that led to this ruling began in the early 2000s with groups who fought against the idea, including the pro-abortion group DKT International. The organization was one of the first to challenge the 2003 law known as the “AIDS Leadership Act” because it\u00a0did not<\/em> want<\/a> to take an official position against<\/em> sex trafficking and prostitution as the government required. DKT International has financial connections to the abortion industry, and sex trafficking and prostitution bring a fair amount of money to the abortion industry.<\/p>\n

According to the American Civil Liberties Union<\/a>, which took up the DKT International suit in 2006, DKT International can not agree to speak out against prostitution because that “could\u00a0lead to further stigmatization of this high risk population.” In addition, they said that if they were to speak out against prostitution, it would ruin their efforts to promote safe sex among sex workers (or in reality, sex trafficking victims). But the truth, as usual, goes much deeper.<\/p>\n

DKT International isn’t concerned with keeping the victims of prostitution and sex trafficking “safe” from STDs. Rather, its refusal to adopt a policy against prostitution and sex trafficking comes from its entanglement<\/a> in the sex and abortion industries from which it profits financially.<\/p>\n

DKT’s founder profits from pornography and sex trafficking\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

DKT International was founded by Philip Harvey, a man who has made millions selling pornographic films and sex toys through his mail-order company, Adam & Eve<\/a>. The pornography industry — including Harvey’s Adam & Eve — benefits financially from the sex trafficking industry.\u00a0As reported by National Review<\/a>:<\/p>\n

According to many survivors of sex trafficking, there is often no way to know whether a girl in a pornographic video is appearing on camera under coercive, nonconsensual, or threatening circumstances. Viewers can’t know whether they are viewing a child or whether the ‘performer’ is being raped on camera.<\/em><\/p>\n

If Harvey and his company are making money from pornography, then they are also making money from sex trafficking and prostitution. For\u00a0DKT International to\u00a0speak out against these abuses could hurt their bottom line.<\/p>\n

DKT funds abortion in developing countries<\/strong><\/p>\n

DKT International funds what Harvey calls “family planning in developing countries.” DKT International receives 25% of the profits from\u00a0Adam & Eve’s sales of adult films and sex toys — sales of which totaled about\u00a0$75 million in 2019 — then uses that money to fund abortion businesses including the\u00a0scandal-ridden<\/a>\u00a0Marie Stopes International — a UK based abortion business that has received more than\u00a0$9 million, and of which Harvey serves on the board.<\/p>\n

“In the early days I was terrified that, because of Adam & Eve, we were going to lose support for some of our programs,” Harvey admitted in 2002. “It never happened. I think part of the reason was that the key people in charge of family planning overseas, even in conservative governments, are not the types who are likely to be upset by sex products. After all, they’re in the sex business themselves.”<\/p>\n

That is a rather shockingly true admission – that the people in charge of family planning overseas — Marie Stopes International and Planned Parenthood International — are “in the sex business themselves.”<\/p>\n

No matter how they frame it, businesses that market themselves as non-profit “family planning” organizations are in it for the money, not to help women.\u00a0Prostitution and sex trafficking are highly unethical but profitable<\/em> systems of sexual abuse.<\/p>\n

DKT makes money from selling abortion pills and supplies in developing countries<\/strong><\/p>\n

DKT International also supplies contraceptives and sells<\/em> the abortion pill and manual vacuum aspiration abortion kits<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2017, it acquired the worldwide rights to sell those abortion kits and now markets and distributes them in over 100 countries. DKT’s sales for 2019 included 13.2 million emergency contraceptives, 19.6 million dangerous<\/a> misoprostol-only abortion pills, 4.2 million mifepristone plus misoprostol abortion pill “combipacks,” 222,123 manual vacuum abortion kits, and 1.8 million cannulae — used for suction abortions. DKT International even boasts in its 2019 Annual Report<\/a> that its Prudence condom is the number one selling condom in Brazil and Mexico. The total revenue for 2019 was $200.5 million. 71.5% of that came from sales of contraception and abortion products. That’s over $143 million in revenue.<\/p>\n

The prostitution and sex trafficking industries heavily rely<\/a> on these products to keep their victims from becoming pregnant or from giving birth. These victims are often put on birth control and\/or forced into abortion by their pimps and abusers — thereby making those two industries very profitable to DKT International and not something it would likely oppose. A decrease in prostitution or sex trafficking would lead to a decrease in sales and profits for DKT International’s contraception and abortion products and Harvey’s pornography business as well.<\/p>\n

It is vital that the US government withhold taxpayer funding from any organization that does not stand against horrific practices of abuse such as prostitution and sex trafficking. The women and children who are victims of these so-called industries deserve protection and freedom, not financial support for their abusers.<\/p>\n
