A recent question<\/a> in Slate\u2019s \u201cDear Prudence\u201d advice column brings to light the disconnect between being politically \u201cpro-choice\u201d and the brutal\u00a0reality of abortion<\/a>. The person seeking advice says his girlfriend is a fourth-year medical student training to be an abortionist. The writer says, \u201cTheoretically, I\u2019m all for this,\u201d explaining that he is politically in support of elective abortion. Yet he personally finds his girlfriend\u2019s chosen career path emotionally taxing and does not specify why it bothers him.<\/p>\n

Avoiding the heart of the matter, the advice seeker\u00a0states<\/a>, \u201cRight now she\u2019s only assisting with abortions, but once she graduates, she\u2019ll be doing them independently nearly every day. I hate that I\u2019m saying this, but the ethics of this decision make me feel squeamish.\u201d He continues, \u201cI believe abortions should be safely available to all folks who want them. But sleeping next to someone who does that procedure day in and day out is taking a toll.\u201d<\/p>\n

Claiming, \u201cI feel so horrible for having this hang-up,\u201d the writer finally asks, \u201cWhat should I do? Is there a way I can fix this by myself so I can be the supportive partner she deserves?\u201d<\/p>\n

Interestingly, the answer<\/a> given from \u201cDear Prudence\u201d in a strongly pro-abortion publication<\/a> does not question that many people might justifiably feel squeamish about dating an abortionist. \u201cIt\u2019s worth getting specific\u00a0about what\u2019s bothering you,\u201d the advice columnist responds. This is followed by a list of probing questions that, like the original question, avoid the real issue. The columnist writes, “Where exactly does your support turn into discomfort? Is it the \u2018day in and day out\u2019 part? Would you feel more comfortable dating someone who assisted with abortions once a month? Do you feel like abortion access is important in theory but have some unexamined sense that it ought to take place less often than it does?\u201d<\/p>\n
