{"id":226079,"date":"2020-06-25T10:20:20","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T15:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=226079"},"modified":"2020-07-01T20:35:18","modified_gmt":"2020-07-02T01:35:18","slug":"turnaway-study-authors-continue-deceive-public-abortions-consequences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/turnaway-study-authors-continue-deceive-public-abortions-consequences\/","title":{"rendered":"Four reasons why the abortion &#8216;Turnaway Study&#8217; should not be trusted"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hailed as a \u201cgroundbreaking\u201d analysis of the impact abortion has on women\u2019s lives when originally released five years ago, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Turnaway-Study\/dp\/B0849S5BQQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turnaway Study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/flawed-biased-turnaway-study-now-claims-95-women-happy-abortion\/\">debunked in 2015<\/a>\u00a0due to its numerous methodological errors and conflicts of interest. Despite this, the study\u2019s principal investigator, Diana Greene Foster, recently published her findings in a book. Foster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/news\/overwhelming-majority-women-who-have-abortion-say-decision-was-right-them-5-years-later\">argues<\/a> that being denied an abortion does greater harm to women than having one &#8211; but her\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conclusion that over 90% of women who have abortions do not regret it five years later is misleading at best and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-ignores-flaws-abortion-regret\/\">downright deceptive<\/a> at worst.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if it were true that a majority of women experience no negative side effects from abortion, the pro-life position remains the same: deliberately taking an innocent life through abortion is wrong. However, far from offering an honest assessment into the psyche of women who have had abortions, Foster\u2019s research is demonstrative of long-standing efforts to deny women&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/researchers-dismiss-women-negative-abortion-experiences\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-abortion trauma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While media outlets have been quick to revere the study, Foster\u2019s overreaching conclusions should be looked at with skepticism instead of praise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Biased Study Sample<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problems with the sample of women used in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6161227\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turnaway Study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are noticeable almost immediately. Out of the thousands of women invited to participate, only 27% of them consented to being interviewed about their abortions. By the study\u2019s final year, participation had dropped to 17%. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The low participation rate and high dropout rates means it\u2019s impossible for Foster to claim her research represents a majority of women who have had abortions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buried within the study\u2019s reports is the fact that women who felt the highest rates of relief at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/abortionrisks.org\/index.php?title=Turn_Away_Study#Non-Representative_Sample\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">baseline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were less likely to be lost to follow-up. Women suffering from negative feelings about their abortion during the initial interview process were the most likely to drop out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This should have prompted the researchers to investigate whether this was tied to possible feelings of post-abortive regret. Previous <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/abortionrisks.org\/index.php?title=Soderberg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found women who have had abortions may be reluctant to talk about their experiences. The fact that the authors chose to ignore this relevant information should cast significant doubt upon the integrity of their study.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/research\/turnaway-study\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">authors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also said they recruited women from 30 abortion facilities around the country, but did not disclose how these sites were chosen. The only consistent detail in the selection of facilities was that each was affiliated with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mercatornet.com\/the-continuing-saga-of-efforts-to-deny-the-heartache-of-abortion\/10449\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Abortion Federation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since abortion facilities were responsible for recruiting women for the study, this could also be an explanation for why women displaying signs of post-abortion trauma were not reflected in the final numbers. The facility staff could merely have chosen to exclude these women from the study.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/three-decades-bound-silenced-abortion-regret\/\">For three decades, she felt \u2018bound, gagged, silenced, and oppressed\u2019 with abortion regret<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>No True Control Group\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foster has claimed her study is unique because it compared the emotional state of women who had abortions to women who were turned away by abortion facilities for being too far along\u2014except <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6161227\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-fourth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the women used in the study\u2019s control group had abortions elsewhere prior to the study, or reported that they suffered a miscarriage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This renders the study\u2019s findings useless. Foster\u2019s investigation merely compared one group of post-abortive women to another group of post-abortive women, mixed in with a few participants who suffered a reproductive loss or who did not have abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The claim that being denied an abortion carries a heavier psychological risk than having an abortion is not supported by the study\u2019s own data. Women who carried their pregnancies to term after being turned away experienced improvements in their levels of anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. In fact, one week after being denied an abortion, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/abortionrisks.org\/index.php?title=Turn_Away_Study#Non-Representative_Sample\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average depression score<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of these women was lower than the women who had aborted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Physical Health<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After excluding abortion-related deaths that took place 42 days after the procedure and ignoring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afterabortion.org\/abortion-risks-a-list-of-major-physical-complications-related-to-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> linking abortion to severe physical side effects, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1049386715001589\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foster\u2019s team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> asserted that their study confirmed the safety of abortion. The inaccuracy of this conclusion should not come as a surprise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women were merely asked if there were any health problems after going through childbirth or an abortion, and if they experienced any debilitating periods. This self-survey did not examine any medical records, and the lack of proper reporting of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-complications-reported-cant-claim-safe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion complications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was ignored by the study\u2019s authors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Misleading Questions\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conclusion that 95% of women do not regret their abortion five years after the procedure comes from a single question. Women were merely asked if their abortion was \u201cright\u201d for them. The only possible answers were \u201cyes,\u201d \u201cno,\u201d or \u201cuncertain.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This question did not allow the authors to assess if any of the women&#8217;s attitudes toward their abortions had shifted, and no effort appears to have been made to evaluate the reliability of the question. While the authors may have interpreted \u201cright\u201d to mean no regrets, did the women being sampled see it that way?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did the women in the study mean abortion was the right choice at the time? Did the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reaction_formation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phrasing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the question compel them to defend a decision they could no longer change? Had these women sought help prior to the study that may have reduced any negative emotions they felt about their abortion? These variables seem to have been left unaccounted for by Foster and her team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the authors had asked participants if they would choose abortion again if faced with another unexpected pregnancy, perhaps that would have allowed for greater insight. A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/abortionrisks.org\/index.php?title=Soderberg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of post-abortive women from Sweden, for example, found that 80% of women reported satisfaction with their abortion, but 76% of participants stated they would <em>not<\/em> choose abortion again if they experienced another unplanned pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the Turnaway Study authors ignored <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/researchers-dismiss-women-negative-abortion-experiences\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has found a link between abortion and negative emotional states. It is also highly questionable for scientists to make such generalized conclusions about women\u2019s mental health based on a single study.
