(Life Site News<\/a>)\u00a0Ten states are supporting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration\u2019s restrictions on access to the abortion pill, which are currently being challenged in court by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and other groups.<\/p>\n

Indiana, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma wrote in their motion to intervene<\/a> that they \u201chave a strong interest in protecting their citizens from the health and safety consequences that may result from unsupervised administration of mifepristone.\u201d<\/p>\n

A motion to intervene is filed by an entity in order to become a party to a lawsuit, which is generally limited to plaintiffs (in this case, ACOG) and defendants (the FDA). The entity filing the motion to intervene must have an interest in the lawsuit. Here, the 10 states have their own laws regarding the use of mifepristone, which has to be \u201cdispensed in person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mifepristone is the drug otherwise known as the abortion pill.<\/p>\n

According to the 10 states, \u201cMifepristone can have serious complications, including hemorrhaging, infection, and even death. These complications can be exacerbated if the physician does not perform an in-person examination. An in-person meeting also facilitates informed consent and prevents the diversion of drugs and mitigates the possibility of complications, which may in turn yield Medicaid claims.\u201d<\/p>\n
