Lawmakers in Tennessee are one step closer to passing a bill<\/a> that would require abortion providers to inform women of the chance to reverse a chemical abortion should the woman change her mind mid-way through the two-step process. If the bill passes, abortion pill providers found in violation of the law could face felony charges.<\/p>\n

The measure<\/a> passed in the state House on Monday with a vote of 71-22. It requires abortionists to inform women either in person or over the phone that the abortion process may be reversed if the woman has second thoughts after taking the first of the two pills that make up a chemical abortion. This information must be shared at least 48 hours prior to the initiation of the chemical abortion. The bill also requires that signs containing abortion reversal information be posted in the waiting rooms of facilities that commit more than 50 abortions per year. Abortionists who fail to disclose this information could face a $10,000 civil penalty and a felony charge.<\/p>\n

A chemical abortion is a multi-step process that involves taking two pills over the course of several days. The first pill, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone and causes the lining of the uterus to thin.
