{"id":223301,"date":"2020-05-14T18:29:18","date_gmt":"2020-05-14T23:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=223301"},"modified":"2020-05-14T18:29:18","modified_gmt":"2020-05-14T23:29:18","slug":"researchers-dismiss-women-negative-abortion-experiences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/researchers-dismiss-women-negative-abortion-experiences\/","title":{"rendered":"Why do so many researchers dismiss women&#8217;s negative abortion experiences?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A meta-analysis published in 2011 in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bjp.rcpsych.org\/content\/199\/3\/180.abstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Journal of Psychiatry<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reignited a debate about abortion and its effects on mental health. Research psychologist Dr. Priscilla Coleman combined the results of 22 studies, and her review found that women who obtain abortions are 81 percent more likely to experience mental health problems than women who have not aborted. The multiple-study analysis included data on\u00a0877,181 women from six different countries, conducted between 1995 and 2009.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Higher rates of mental health problems associated with abortion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In each of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bjp.rcpsych.org\/content\/199\/3\/180.abstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used\u2014even ones that purported to show that abortion does not have any emotional side effects\u2014higher rates of mental health problems were found among post-abortive women. The rates of anxiety for women who had aborted pregnancies were found to be 34 percent higher than women who carried to term. Depression among post-abortive women was 37 percent higher, and heavier alcohol use was 110 percent higher. Marijuana use was 230 percent higher in women who had abortions, and suicidal behavior was found to be 155 percent higher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though women who had abortions were found to be <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bjp.rcpsych.org\/content\/199\/3\/180.abstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more likely to struggle with their mental health than women who did not abort, Coleman\u2019s study was met with opposition. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, dissent to research similar to Coleman\u2019s typically has not refuted these findings but has instead resorted to avoidance strategies and deflection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Research on abortion tends to be biased<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because much of the research surrounding abortion tends to be plagued by bias. In 1967, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afterabortion.org\/attack-and-distract-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0took the stance that abortion was a \u201ccivil right.\u201d There was no evidence such a procedure improved a woman\u2019s mental state, and it was merely assumed that terminating an unexpected pregnancy would reduce stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once abortion was legalized, there were only a few\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afterabortion.org\/attack-and-distract-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0published that assessed a woman\u2019s emotional well-being after an abortion. However, most of these studies asked women how they felt a few <em>hours<\/em> after the abortion had taken place, and the ones that followed up with women waited two weeks at most before inquiring about their condition again. Most of the women <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afterabortion.org\/attack-and-distract-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">declined<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to answer questions about their abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since women who reported negative feelings in the follow-ups were classified as a minority, the conclusions highlighted the experiences of the women who reportedly felt fine after an abortion. This was used to support the idea that mental health benefits and abortion access were correlated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/men-suffering-post-abortion-trauma\/\">Men describe suffering from post-abortion trauma: \u2018I was totally destroyed\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Researchers have long sought to discredit women&#8217;s negative abortion experiences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Challenges to this narrative arose when the women who were dismissed as a minority reached out to one another to share their stories of grief.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedfamilies.org\/abortion\/women-exploited-by-abortion-nancyjo-manns-story\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nancyjo Mann<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0helped to draw national attention to the experiences of post-abortive women in 1982 when she founded Women Exploited By Abortion (WEBA), ensuring that almost every state had peer counseling programs. Combined with psychotherapist\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abort73.com\/abortion\/post_abortion_syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Vincent Rue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0defining &#8220;post-abortion syndrome&#8221; (post-abortion trauma) as a form of PTSD, abortion supporters were suddenly compelled to defend their position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The testimonies of women like Mann were dismissed, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afterabortion.org\/attack-and-distract-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0uncovering negative psychological reactions to abortion was rejected in favor of research reporting no adverse effects. These studies, produced by abortion proponents, only analyzed women\u2019s emotional state within the first few months after their abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The controversy surrounding the connection between abortion and women\u2019s mental health reached a point where politicians could not pretend to be unaware. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan tasked\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/afterabortion.org\/1999\/revisiting-the-koop-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgeon General C. Everett Koop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0with crafting a report on the effects of abortion. Within his letter to the president, Koop stated there was insufficient data, and he could not offer a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/afterabortion.org\/1999\/revisiting-the-koop-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">definite conclusion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than resolve the issue, this sharpened the divide amongst researchers who were in disagreement about the effects of abortion on mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rue would have to wait until 1992 before his analysis of post-abortion trauma was finally published in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spssi.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1540-4560.1992.tb00899.x\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Journal of Social Issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it was only accepted so the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afterabortion.org\/attack-and-distract-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journal\u2019s editors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0could \u201cbring balance to the special issue.\u201d Rue\u2019s paper was the only one published that was <em>not<\/em> in defense of abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers like\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1404747\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Nada Stotland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who declared that post-abortion trauma \u201cdoes not exist,\u201d avoided referencing Rue in their publications intended to disprove abortion-related trauma. A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/afterabortion.org\/1999\/nada-stotland-admits-psychological-impact-of-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0by Stotland later revealed her shock when a former patient experienced a delayed adverse reaction to a past abortion after suffering a miscarriage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/research-post-abortion-trauma-real\/\">Research shows post-abortion trauma is very real, and women aren\u2019t alone<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coleman\u2019s report was intended to weigh these results without any of the biases that often plagued such studies. Despite publicly declaring its support for abortion, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/afterabortion.org\/2008\/chair-of-apa-abortion-report-task-force-violates-apa-ethics-rules\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">APA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had released a report in 2008 that neglected to follow scientific protocols. Coleman attempted to remedy this by applying the same standards of evaluation used in pharmaceutical trials to studies on abortion, but abortion advocates made unfounded claims about the efforts behind her study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the accusations leveled at Coleman was that her study failed to control for pre-existing mental health problems. However, this was not the case; Coleman&#8217;s study included <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.afterabortion.org\/law\/DutytoScreen.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">numerous controls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, excluding women with a history of inpatient psychiatric treatment and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16453987\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prior to their pregnancies. The study also <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15230081\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for pre-pregnancy self-esteem and other issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/afterabortion.org\/attack-and-distract-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coleman\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study was the first to utilize such controls for women with a psychiatric history, and the first to compare women who carried their pregnancies to term with women who had abortions. Most studies before this lacked a comparison group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some have claimed that researchers like Coleman, who have identified risks associated with abortion, have not offered definite proof that it leads to a higher likelihood of mental health problems. Yet there is no proof that abortion has provided mental health benefits for women, especially not those who have spoken out about their trauma.
