That&#8217;s what doctors told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/miracle-twins-makenzie-amp-makayla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tracey Hernandez<\/a> when she went into premature labor with her twin daughters at just 22 weeks and three days gestation. The girls were due to be born on April 9, 2020, but instead arrived on December 8, 2019, at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. Now, they are four months old and heading home soon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I went into labor they told me the survival rate for them was zero percent,&#8221; Hernandez told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christian.org.uk\/news\/twin-sisters-become-worlds-second-most-premature-babies-to-survive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Christian Institute<\/a>. &#8220;They said that babies born at less than 23 weeks just don&#8217;t make it.&#8221; And yet, the girls proved those doctors wrong. I was nervous and scared and just thought &#8216;is this really happening.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Makenzie weighed one pound, one ounce, while Makayla weighed one pound, three ounces at birth. They were so premature that their skin was transparent, and their eyes were still fused shut. They were here and they are not even developed yet,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Their skin looked see through and they could fit in the palm of my hand. Everyone was just so shocked at how well they are doing and no one gave them a chance before they arrived. I am so lucky and I know it&#8217;s an absolute miracle. North Carolina bans abortion after 20 weeks, except to save the life or health of the mother &#8211; which is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-replies-abortion-never-medically-necessary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">never actually medically necessary<\/a>. Some doctors have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hospital-staff-premature-twin-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flat out refused<\/a> to help babies born younger than 24 weeks. Thankfully, Makenzie&#8217;s and Makayla&#8217;s doctors gave them a chance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not right that life is only viable at 23 weeks,&#8221; said Hernandez. &#8220;Normally babies born before then are just written off and not given a chance to survive. I just don&#8217;t agree with the abortion laws as they stand at all. My two babies came out alive and looked fully formed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to The Metro, the twins are the second youngest to survive premature birth ever, after <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/04\/15\/astonishing-photos-show-birth-second-premature-twin-babies-ever-survive-12558605\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keeley and Kambry Ewoldt<\/a> from Iowa, who were born at 22 weeks and one day in 2018. However, in April 2019 twins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/parents\/born-22-weeks-twin-micropreemies-among-youngest-survive-t170553\">Everlei and Rylei<\/a> survived after being born at 22 weeks and two days, and twins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/273628386593418\/?ref=share\">Ema and Luna<\/a> were also born at 22 weeks and two days. The youngest age for a baby to survive is 21 weeks and five days, and that record is shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/preemie-teaches-pro-life-lesson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frieda Mangold<\/a> of Germany, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/67461-most-premature-baby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Elgin Gill<\/a> of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are a creation of God and I have watched them develop outside the womb,&#8221; said Hernandez on her daughters. &#8220;[&#8230;] The have both amazed me and they continue to amaze me.
