{"id":222193,"date":"2020-04-20T10:44:32","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T15:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=222193"},"modified":"2020-04-20T00:59:02","modified_gmt":"2020-04-20T05:59:02","slug":"medical-journal-abortion-heart-covid-19-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/medical-journal-abortion-heart-covid-19-response\/","title":{"rendered":"Top medical journal: Abortion must be &#8216;at the heart&#8217; of COVID-19 response"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/top-medical-journal-abortion-must-be-at-the-heart-of-covid19-response\">Life Site News<\/a>)\u00a0As the abortion industry fights to continue and expand abortion in the face of the global coronavirus crisis, a new paper in the prestigious medical journal <em>Lancet\u00a0<\/em>declares that a \u201csexual and reproductive health and justice policy agenda must be at the heart of the COVID-19 response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlobal responses to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic are converging with pervasive, existing sexual and reproductive health and justice inequities to disproportionately impact the health, wellbeing, and economic stability of women, girls, and vulnerable populations,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(20)30801-1\/fulltext?dgcid=raven_jbs_etoc_email\">the paper<\/a>, which was written by Kelli Stidham Hall, Goleen Samari, Samantha Garbers, Sara E Casey, Dazon Dixon Diallo, Miriam Orcutt, Rachel T Moresky, Micaela Elvira Martinez, and Terry McGovern.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, a \u201csexual and reproductive health and justice framework\u2014one that centres human rights, acknowledges intersecting injustices, recognises power structures, and unites across identities\u2014is essential for monitoring and addressing the inequitable gender, health, and social effects of COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper goes on to argue that \u201cdisruption of services and diversion of resources away from essential sexual and reproductive health care because of prioritising the COVID-19 response are expected to increase risks of maternal and child morbidity and mortality,\u201d a curious claim in light of the fact that \u201creproductive health care\u201d kills children by design. \u201cAdditionally, systemic racism, discrimination, and stigma are likely to further compound logistical barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive health care for women and marginalised groups,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CFZDhM5Gwhk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-medical-journal-us-pro-life-repressive\/\">UK medical journal slams US pro-life laws: \u2018Regressive, religious, repressive\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It condemns the Trump administration\u2019s ban on foreign aid to abortion groups and the closing of American and European borders, and claims that \u201cadditional resources must be directed to, not diverted from, the sexual and reproductive health workforce.\u201d It also calls for expanding \u201ctelemedicine\u201d abortions (dispensing abortion pills after communicating with a doctor via webcam), and eliminating \u201clegal and policy restrictions to sexual and reproductive health service provision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly when public health responses to COVID-19 leverage intersectional, human rights centred frameworks, transdisciplinary science-driven theories and methods, and community-driven approaches, will they sufficiently prevent complex health and social adversities for women, girls, and vulnerable populations,\u201d the paper claims.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2019, the <em>Lancet<\/em> chose to abandon its veneer of scientific objectivity in favor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/popular-uk-medical-journal-officially-declares-its-support-for-abortion\">endorsing legal abortion<\/a> in strikingly partisan terms, declaring abortion a \u201csettled, inviolable right that is central to achieving not only reproductive health goals but women&#8217;s freedom over their own bodies\u201d; and degrading pro-life legislation as \u201cregressive, religious, and repressive law-making\u201d that\u2019s somehow inconsistent with being \u201cadvocates for women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many medical experts disagree, both with the <em>Lancet\u2019s<\/em> embrace of legal abortion and with the idea that abortion should be elevated during a pandemic. The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) <a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/press-release-30000-physicians-respond-to-acog-on-covid19\/\">note<\/a> that, in addition to being non-essential, abortion \u201cgenerates more patients to be seen in already overburdened emergency rooms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost abortion providers instruct women to go to an emergency room if they have any concerning symptoms after the abortion,\u201d AAPLOG notes. \u201cApproximately five percent of women who undergo medication abortions will require evaluation in an emergency room, most commonly for hemorrhage. Surgical abortions can also result in hemorrhage.
