Referring to the problem as \u201cthis nameless dissatisfaction for women,\u201d the original manuscript for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cosmo-men-womens-legal-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friedan\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> book did not mention abortion or contraception. Her book was passionate, and it inspired women, but it did not indict them for motherhood. Rather, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2016\/08\/modern-feminists-betty-friedan-feminine-mystique-lost-third-wave-feminists\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friedan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called for this new brand of feminism to be a pro-family movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/world.wng.org\/node\/112709\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual liberation and misandry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became the forefront of the movement, and this trend continues today. Women like Cosmopolitan editor\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/12\/12\/from-cosmo-girl-to-catholic-woman-the-story-of-one-womans-liberation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helen Gurley Brown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(who charged motherhood with being an \u201cinsurmountable obstacle\u201d for women) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1972\/07\/19\/archives\/feminists-scored-by-betty-friedan-says-women-too-can-be-guilty-of.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gloria Steinem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(who likened marriage to prostitution) have won the public\u2019s attention. Feminism\u2019s intended purpose has been mostly forgotten by mainstream proponents of women\u2019s rights, and nowhere is this point more evident than in the recent FX\/Hulu series, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mrs. America<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iu09-7Wq3fs\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/mrs-americas-caricature-of-phyllis-schlafly-is-pure-propaganda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phyllis Schlafly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the woman who exposed the emptiness of the Equal Rights Amendment and aided in its defeat, is portrayed with unrestrained bitterness by Hollywood elites. Depicting the battle within the 1970s over the ERA, there\u2019s one side of the women\u2019s movement the series sets up as the heroes, and it isn\u2019t Schlafly\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlafly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/04\/13\/elites-hate-phyllis-schlafly-because-she-defeated-them-from-home-with-six-kids-in-tow\/\">Harvard University-educated and a courageous mother of six<\/a>, her television counterpart, played by Cate Blanchett, bears no resemblance to the actual woman. A Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mrs-america-review-over-the-top-firebrand-11586460264\">review<\/a> of the series says\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlafly\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fictional portrayal possesses a \u201cthwarted ambition,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plagued<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with \u201cgender bias\u201d that she is said to be unable to see due to being \u201cblinded\u201d by \u201cresentments and calcifying rage.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/04\/13\/elites-hate-phyllis-schlafly-because-she-defeated-them-from-home-with-six-kids-in-tow\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlafly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the homemakers she trained to debate ERA supporters were significantly lacking in rage and made their principled case through facts. Not only would the ERA fail to place women in the Constitution, as it only vaguely mentioned \u201csex,\u201d Schlafly and her followers highlighted the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/2016\/02\/02\/whats-wrong-with-equal-rights-for-women-1972\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative ramifications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the amendment would have had for women. In addition to subjecting them to the draft, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/2016\/02\/02\/whats-wrong-with-equal-rights-for-women-1972\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as real-estate dower laws, child support, and alimony would have been stripped away.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/equal-rights-amendment-damaging-women\/\">Why the Equal Rights Amendment could actually be damaging to women<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ERA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had the support of the media, Hollywood celebrities, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suzannevenker.com\/feminism\/the-behind-the-scenes-true-story-of-the-equal-rights-amendment-era\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that had decided to ratify it as the amendment was debated from 1972 to 1982. If only eight more states had voted in favor, then the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ERA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would\u2019ve made it into the Constitution. Its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supporters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had deemed it necessary in order to rescue women from second-class citizenship by granting the federal government power to prohibit different treatment of the sexes.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ERA supporters saw this as liberating to women, though it would have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/equal-rights-amendment-damaging-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revoked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the equal rights women had. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ERA feminists<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> declared the amendment would give women better jobs and improve their pay in the workforce, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suzannevenker.com\/feminism\/the-behind-the-scenes-true-story-of-the-equal-rights-amendment-era\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlafly and her followers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refuted this point as well. Congress had already protected women\u2019s employment through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/laws\/statutes\/epa.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equal Pay Act of 1963<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who called for the ERA to end the legal oppression of females <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falsely claimed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Constitution does not mention women. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlafly and those opposed to the ERA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offered a factual refutation once more, citing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/constitutionus.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the document\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use of gender-neutral words, such as \u201cwe the people,\u201d \u201cresident,\u201d \u201ccitizen,\u201d and other terms that are applicable to both sexes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ERA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s supporters became desperate when it was given a deadline of seven years. With the media covering their fight to pass the ERA, feminists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suzannevenker.com\/feminism\/the-behind-the-scenes-true-story-of-the-equal-rights-amendment-era\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rallied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind their slogans of \u201cA woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle\u201d and \u201cMother Nature is a lesbian.\u201d The reporters giving them attention ironically created a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public relations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disaster for ERA-feminists, as it meant people were able to actually hear their message.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_222044\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222044\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-222044\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/phyllis-schlafly-700x392.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/phyllis-schlafly-700x392.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/phyllis-schlafly-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/phyllis-schlafly-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/phyllis-schlafly-500x280.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/phyllis-schlafly.jpg 944w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-222044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phyllis Schlafly (Screenshot: Eagle Forum)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as it turned out, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/equal-rights-amendment-another-effort-sneak-abortion-constitution\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion on demand and the scorning of motherhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were not so palatable to the rest of society. It became easier for the public to see the truth <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlafly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/2016\/02\/02\/whats-wrong-with-equal-rights-for-women-1972\/\">had spoken<\/a> about the ERA: its supporters were more concerned with winning superfluous cultural battles instead of caring for the needs of women. Despite their scorn of it, Schlafly\u2019s efforts proved marriage\u2019s empowerment of women, and the effectiveness of honoring the distinctions of the sexes. This included, of course, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/2016\/02\/02\/whats-wrong-with-equal-rights-for-women-1972\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unique ability to carry and nurture children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ERA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> failed to pass, but that did not halt attempts to ratify it. Radical feminists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suzannevenker.com\/feminism\/the-behind-the-scenes-true-story-of-the-equal-rights-amendment-era\/\">increased the fervor of the battle<\/a> by writing the names of legislators in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pigs\u2019 blood<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Illinois Capitol\u2019s marble floor, mailing bags of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chicken manure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to senators, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chaining themselves<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the doors of the legislative buildings. These angry demonstrations did not stop the ERA from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expiring<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at midnight on June 30, 1982.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/04\/13\/elites-hate-phyllis-schlafly-because-she-defeated-them-from-home-with-six-kids-in-tow\/\">In contrast<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlafly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and her team delivered complimentary notes and baked goods to legislators. They <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lobbied<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their state houses and engaged in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public debates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to champion their cause. Traditional feminist principles won, and cultural elites have been resentful about it ever since. As modern feminists attempt to resurrect the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/house-bill-deadline-equal-rights-amendment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ERA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from the dead, we can see why Hollywood has decided now is the time to smear the opposition. See an a short documentary on Schlafly produced by Eagle Forum below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HazTs0n0xi0\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/mrs-americas-caricature-of-phyllis-schlafly-is-pure-propaganda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlafly and her husband<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are said to have enjoyed a loving marriage, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/opinion\/columnists\/zurawik\/bs-ed-zontv-pbs-fx-history-20200403-teyjouvfsraovbh27dpfkraicy-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mrs. America<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depicts Schlafly being raped by him, attempting to assert the idea that Schlafly only held her beliefs because she was oppressed by her husband and the patriarchy. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlafly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the show is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2020\/04\/mrs-america-cate-blanchett-review\">\u201cmonster\u201d<\/a> who caused the defeat of the ERA, showcasing a revisionist history with the intention of rallying a base that does not know the truth. Unfortunately, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlafly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is deceased and cannot defend herself, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/mrs-americas-caricature-of-phyllis-schlafly-is-pure-propaganda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">show\u2019s producers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did not bother to investigate her life story. If they had, perhaps viewers would have seen more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/honoring-departed-pro-life-hero-phyllis-schlafly\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the woman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who inspired women to be empowered, not victims.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to aiding in the defeat of the radical ERA, another reason why Schlafly is despised by mainstream proprietors of feminism is this: She accomplished what the feminist movement has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/womens-march-removes-pro-life-group-list-partners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">failed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to do for years.
