{"id":221663,"date":"2020-04-11T13:45:37","date_gmt":"2020-04-11T18:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=221663"},"modified":"2020-04-10T17:12:12","modified_gmt":"2020-04-10T22:12:12","slug":"planned-parenthood-california-bill-hide-minors-abortions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-california-bill-hide-minors-abortions\/","title":{"rendered":"Planned Parenthood sponsors California bill to hide minors&#8217; abortions from parents"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood is sponsoring a new bill in California that would further erode parental rights by making it illegal for insurance companies to share information about any abortions committed on minors \u2014 even when their parents&#8217; insurance is used to pay for the abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduced by State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB1004\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB 1004<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as the Confidentiality of Medical Information Act, would make it a crime for health insurance companies to disclose information about \u201csensitive services\u201d &#8212; to include abortion &#8212; to anyone other than the \u201cprotected individual.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill\u2019s definition of a \u201cprotected individual\u201d includes any \u201cminor who can consent to a health care service without the consent of a parent or legal guardian, pursuant to state or federal law.\u201d Since minors of any age can consent to abortion under existing California law, SB1004 effectively prevents parents from knowing about their daughters\u2019 abortions even while paying for them through their health insurance coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-happy-help-minors-obtain-abortions-without-parents-knowledge\/\">Planned Parenthood happy to help minors obtain abortions without parents\u2019 knowledge<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Christian Headlines <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianheadlines.com\/contributors\/scott-slayton\/california-bill-would-keep-parents-from-knowing-when-children-have-abortions-get-transgender-hormones.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Planned Parenthood has framed its support for the bill as an effort to provide patients with greater confidentiality. \u201cWhen a patient accesses care for a sensitive service, including sexual and reproductive health care, confidentiality is of the utmost importance,\u201d said Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthoodaction.org\/planned-parenthood-affiliates-california\/legislative-priorities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement on its website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Yet the abortion activist group did not mention that the bill would apply not only to adults, but also to minors of any age who seek abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/igQlxvXdn4s\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGovernment bureaucrats should not be helping Planned Parenthood undermine parents\u2019 rights to guide and oversee the healthcare of their children,\u201d said California Family Council President Jonathan Keller, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catholiccitizens.org\/issues\/culture-of-death\/91586\/planned-parenthood-sponsors-bill-to-force-insurance-companies-to-keep-secrets-from-parents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CatholicCitizens.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cTransparency matters. The owner of an insurance policy deserves to know what medical procedures they are paying for. If an adult under 26 wants insurance privacy, they can and should purchase their own insurance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1XtEkvBq1wrrgMTb3WFqrgNgspjAiMmCI\/view\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fact sheet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accompanying the bill, State Senator Jackson argued that the bill is required, because \u201cwith the expansion of the Affordable Care Act, young people may be covered by a family member\u2019s insurance plan up to age 26,\u201d and these people \u201cmay not feel safe or comfortable having their health information shared with the policy holder.\u201d Like Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, Senator Jackson omitted any reference to this bill\u2019s impact on minors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action investigations have found that Planned Parenthood covers up the abuse of minors and the crimes of sex traffickers. Eight Planned Parenthood locations in six different states have been caught expressing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/what-we-do\/investigations\/sexual-abuse-cover-up\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">willingness to cover up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sexual abuse of minors. And Planned Parenthood has been caught multiple times <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/prevent-human-trafficking-planned-parenthood-accountable\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sex trafficker ring leaders.
