The UN Human Rights Committee disapproves."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sexualrightsinitiative.com\/sites\/default\/files\/resources\/files\/2019-09\/HRC42%20joint%20statement%20on%20abortion%20-%20EN.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-abortion groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continue to call for expanded access to abortion and contraception around the globe, the UN Human Rights Committee seems determined to protect abortion, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/un-demands-trump-adopt-international-right-to-life-definition-that-includes-abortion\">asserting<\/a> that it is a violation of international human rights law for U.S. states to regulate abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The U.S.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State Department has not yet responded to the committee\u2019s inquiry into the matter. If a written statement is not produced before the next election and a pro-abortion president takes office, it is likely that the response from such an administration to the UN could reflect an erosion of pro-life policies in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/trump-hhs-united-nations-no-right-abortion\/\">Trump HHS Secretary to United Nations: \u2018There is no international right to an abortion\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2019, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/un-demands-trump-adopt-international-right-to-life-definition-that-includes-abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN Human Rights Committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expressed its disapproval to the Trump administration regarding federal and state level pro-life laws, in its review of the nation&#8217;s record on human rights. The Committee views abortion &#8212; the deliberate killing of preborn children in the womb &#8212; as a human right, and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0has been openly critical of various pro-life actions taken by President Trump. One point of contention was the president\u2019s decision to expand the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/no-the-mexico-city-policy-is-not-increasing-abortion-rates-overseas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mexico City Policy<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which prohibits foreign assistance from being given to groups who commit and advocate for abortion overseas.\u00a0International health organizations are still able to provide care under this measure, but in order to receive taxpayer funding, they must not prioritize abortion.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This new <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/statement-lila-rose-president-donald-trumps-protecting-life-global-health-assistance-policy\/\">Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance policy<\/a>\u00a0has been disparagingly referred to as a &#8220;global gag rule.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another point of contention <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was President Trump executive order allowing employers and insurers to make <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-react-trump-hhs-conscience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cconscience-based objections\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the preventive care mandated in the 2009 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This Act had forced the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/top-everything-else-contraception-mandates-dont-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little Sisters of the Poor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8212; a group of Catholic nuns &#8212; to fund abortions and contraception against their will. Though President Trump\u2019s order enables groups like theirs to make decisions in line with their conscience, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/un-demands-trump-adopt-international-right-to-life-definition-that-includes-abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN Committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was concerned about possible restrictions being placed on &#8216;reproductive care&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CFZDhM5Gwhk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arguing that <em>any<\/em> restrictions on abortion puts women\u2019s lives in danger, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/un-demands-trump-adopt-international-right-to-life-definition-that-includes-abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cited its interpretation of Article 6 on the right to life of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Women have a right to government-subsidized abortion, the Committee said, if a preborn child is conceived in rape, if the woman&#8217;s health is in danger, or if the child has a disability. These stipulations, however, ignore several important factors:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-not-compassion-rape\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not a compassionate response to rape, it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dublin-declaration-abortion-is-not-medically-necessary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never medically necessary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/medical-community-mistakes-trisomy-18-down-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children with disabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have no less value than able-bodied ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aul.org\/2019\/09\/25\/report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 U.S. states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enacting life-affirming laws in 2019, pro-abortion lawmakers, as well as domestic and international abortion groups, have begun to fear that\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0could soon be overturned.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representatives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the U.S. government are expected to have an in-person dialogue with the committee sometime in 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic has forced the schedule to be pushed back. The U.S. is expected to issue a written response before then. It is considered\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/un-demands-trump-adopt-international-right-to-life-definition-that-includes-abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atypical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not to issue a written reply to the committee within a few weeks of the Committee&#8217;s review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/united-nations-china-human-rights-council-genocide\/\">United Nations gives China seat on Human Rights Council, despite abuses and genocide<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UN\u2019s abortion agenda has long been cause for concern. A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nairobi-summit-abortion-united-nations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nairobi Summit<\/span><\/a>\u00a0was used by<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the organization as a chance to promote abortion, contraception, and sex education. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nairobi-summit-abortion-united-nations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prominent members<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Kenya\u2019s Parliament disagreed with this agenda, affirming the principles of the Kenyan Constitution, which require that \u201cevery Kenyan has a right to life, and life begins at conception.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nairobi-summit-abortion-united-nations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had been organized in order to follow through on initial promises from a 1994 International Conference on Population and Development.
