{"id":221308,"date":"2020-04-03T16:40:21","date_gmt":"2020-04-03T21:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=221308"},"modified":"2020-04-03T02:17:17","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T07:17:17","slug":"world-health-organization-abortion-essential-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-coronavirus\/","title":{"rendered":"World Health Organization: Abortion is &#8216;essential&#8217; during coronavirus pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite a worldwide health crisis due to COVID-19 and a shortage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advisory.com\/daily-briefing\/2020\/03\/27\/ppe-shortage\">personal protective equipment (PPE)<\/a>,\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\">medical officer<\/a> for the World Health Organization has declared that abortion must be seen as an &#8220;essential service&#8221; during a time of pandemic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/reproductivehealth\/about_us\/staff\/Lavelanet-Biography\/en\/\">Dr. Antonella Lavalanet<\/a>\u00a0of the WHO&#8217;s\u00a0\u201cMaternal and Perinatal Health &amp; Preventing Unsafe Abortion Team\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently hosted an online presentation for the pro-abortion\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.srhm.org\/news\/covid-19-what-implications-for-sexual-and-reproductive-health-and-rights\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual Reproductive Health Matters (SRHM) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journal<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0almost 5,000 people, in which she emphasized the need for abortions to continue despite there being a global health emergency. Lavalanet even declared that it shouldn\u2019t matter if abortion-minded mothers are contagious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking on the release of a document by the WHO that included details about clinic management of respiratory infection, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lavalanet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clarified how \u201cin that document we said that women\u2019s choices and rights to sexual reproductive health care should be respected irrespective of [their] COVID-19 status.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To \u201cthe full extent of the law,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lavalanet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said there must be \u201caccess to contraception and safe abortion.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To her credit, Lavalanet at least acknowledged the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18772096\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased health risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posed by abortions done at a later gestation. However, the WHO officer also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201cabortion&#8230;\u00a0services are essential.\u201d This is likely a response to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-sues-five-states-abortion-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">governments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Lavalanet, \u201care trying to deprioritize these services.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CFZDhM5Gwhk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By drawing comparisons between abortion and standard medical services, the WHO is putting abortion on the same level as the type of care required for women intending to give birth, or women who have some sort of legitimate reproductive concern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-banning-abortion-pandemic-heartless\/\">Planned Parenthood prez: Banning the killing of preborn children during pandemic is \u2018heartless\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lavalanet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> insisted the same level of resources these women need must be put toward abortions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve already said that the equipment, medication, and supplies needed to provide these kinds of [abortion] services are the same as those needed for other GYN services, and we already say that they should be available at primary care level with referral systems in place.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what about these places she mentioned that aren\u2019t prioritizing abortion? This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical officer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thinks women should just induce their own abortions instead. She said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230; In light of depleting commodities and restrictions with entering health facilities, we say that women can manage their own safe abortions using mifepristone and misoprostol up until 12 weeks, where individuals have a source of accurate information and access to a provider should they need it or want it.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve seen the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-capitalize-covid-19-expand\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion industry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> capitalize on the crisis of the virus in order to promote dangerous at-home abortions. There are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanpregnancy.org\/unplanned-pregnancy\/abortion-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious risks and complications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> associated with the abortion pill, including hemorrhaging and even death. By abortion advocates\u2019 own numbers, the pill regimen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/incomplete-abortion-pill-thousands-emergency-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fails<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cbetween 7,000 to 24,000 times annually \u2013 or even as high as 31,000 times a year.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/incomplete-abortion-pill-thousands-emergency-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is incomplete, this means a woman may need to undergo a second procedure, this time a surgical one. The threat posed by self-managed abortions means <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/incomplete-abortion-pill-thousands-emergency-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thousands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of patients could potentially need emergency care. Which means these women may be exposed to COVID-19, or infect other people with the virus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lRDnVSMr5j0\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lavalanet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cWhere supplies of antibiotics are not available, abortion should not be denied.\u201d To allow for abortion access, the WHO is willing to dismiss the need for safeguards, such as \u201cgeneral anesthesia,\u201d or \u201cperformance in operating theaters.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lavalanet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did say some \u201crange of pain medications can be considered.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As medical professionals strive to accommodate patients in the outbreak and provide them with care, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends these workers be deployed in service of abortion where \u201chuman resources are limited.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lavalanet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/world-health-organization-abortion-essential-during-coronavirus-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201c[a] range of health workers can be considered for various tasks related both to comprehensive abortion care [sic]&#8230; as well as specific tasks related to the management of abortion services.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a time of crisis, the emphasis should be on preserving lives.
