Texas, Alabama, Ohio and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ok.gov\/health2\/documents\/310-600%20Abortion%20Facility%20Rule%20Packet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other states<\/a> have ordered abortion businesses to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/states-demand-surgical-abortions-stopped-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporarily<\/a> shut down. Many of these businesses have resisted, insisting that abortion is an &#8220;essential&#8221; medical procedure.<\/p>\n<p>In response to these state orders, abortionist Daniel Grossman &#8212; who sits on the board of the Texas based abortion chain, Whole Woman&#8217;s Health Alliance (WWHA) &#8212;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrDGrossman\/status\/1242813661577707525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0on March 25, &#8220;You can\u2019t tell me that cancelling abortions is going to free up enough PPE for hospitals considering the scale they&#8217;re requesting.&#8221; Grossman reiterated this to Rewire News, <a href=\"https:\/\/rewire.news\/article\/2020\/03\/27\/not-the-time-to-play-politics-the-false-premise-behind-texas-anti-abortion-covid-19-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a>, \u201cVery little personal protective equipment is used in a first-trimester aspiration abortion that\u2019s performed in an outpatient clinic. Maybe you would use a pair of disposable nonsterile gloves for the ultrasound and then another pair of disposable nonsterile gloves when the abortion is actually performed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He then added, &#8220;It\u2019s important that the clinician use a face shield that can be reused throughout the day with multiple patients. But usually, a mask isn\u2019t used. OR wrote, &#8220;one clinic worker in blue surgical scrubs cavalierly gave the thumbs up sign to the pro-life activists who watched with concern for the injured woman.&#8221; Read that story <a COVID-19, the National Abortion Federation (NAF) <a href=\"https:\/\/prochoice.org\/abortion-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advised<\/a>\u00a0that, &#8220;[T]hese procedures do not require <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/suction-method-abortion-being-performed-on-patient-in-news-photo\/50584736?adppopup=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full PPE<\/a>, including an N95 respirator. Abortion providers should screen patients prior to the procedure and use standard precautions.&#8221; However, NAF&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/members.prochoice.org\/iweb\/upload\/facility%20guidelines%20final%20apr%202019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">safety guidelines<\/a> state, &#8220;Facilities should establish&#8230; procedures for properly&#8230; handling, and storing biological specimens&#8230;. Facilities should establish written policies and procedures for infection control.&#8221; Are Grossman and NAF suggesting that handling biological specimens and infection control are accomplished with little PPE?<\/p>\n<p><strong>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization&#8217;s (WHO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications-detail\/clinical-practice-handbook-for-safe-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clinical Practice Handbook for Safe Abortion<\/a>\u00a0begs to differ. It states, &#8220;Since abortion procedures and care involve contact with blood and other body fluids, <strong>all clinical and support staff in all facilities that provide these services<\/strong> should understand and apply standard precautions for infection prevention and control, for both their own protection and that of their patients.
