Hollywood wants you to believe abortion is no big deal — and that\u2019s a supposed to be a great thing, according to a new <\/span>piece<\/span><\/a> published by <\/span>Time.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Suyin Haynes\u2019 piece, \u201cHow a Crop of New Movies is Changing the Narrative about Abortion,\u201d gives an overview of several new and upcoming movies — like <\/span>Saint Frances, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Premature, <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Swallow — <\/span><\/i>where the <\/span>violence of abortion<\/span><\/a> is normalized. The idea is to offer a \u201cquotidian, and decidedly human, approach to depicting the procedure and the decisions that lead up to it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet rather than being truly \u201chuman,\u201d these filmmakers give an airbrushed and deeply one-sided presentation about abortion. From vilifying pro-life pregnancy centers (<\/span>Never Rarely Sometimes<\/span><\/i>) to light-hearted depictions of women taking the abortion pill (<\/span>Saint Frances <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Swallow<\/span><\/i>), to abortion as part of the \u201ccharacter\u2019s journey\u201d (<\/span>Premature<\/span><\/i>), the films are written and directed by activists consciously seeking to present the grisly abortion procedure in a positive light. <\/span>For instance, as Haynes notes, for the filmmaker behind <\/span>Saint Frances <\/span><\/i>\u201cit was important to show Bridget as having complicated feelings about abortion \u2014 but also that guilt and regret were not among them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For years, abortion activists have been <\/span>trying to minimize<\/span><\/a> the trauma felt by many post-abortive women, but that does not change the very real pain, trauma, and regret felt by many women — and even <\/span>men<\/span><\/a>. Every year countless women speak out in groups like <\/span>Silent No More<\/span><\/a>, and many turn to support groups like <\/span>Project Rachel<\/span><\/a> for healing. And this kind of testimony is not confined to pro-life cirlcles. In the popular Netflix dating show, \u201cLove is Blind,\u201d contestant Amber Pike recently <\/span>opened up<\/span><\/a> about her terrible regret and said that another abortion \u201cwould destroy me.\u201d What does it mean offer a \u201cdecidedly human\u201d portrayal of abortion that ignores this reality?<\/span><\/p>\n

The sanitized portrayal of abortion that Haynes celebrates also ignores the dangers of abortion, not only to the preborn baby — who <\/span>almost<\/span><\/a> always dies<\/span><\/a> — but to the many women who suffer at the hands of unscrupulous abortionists. Legal abortion is a <\/span>violent procedure<\/span><\/a>, and women can experience complications and even death as a result. <\/span><\/p>\n
