{"id":220160,"date":"2020-03-17T12:39:53","date_gmt":"2020-03-17T17:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=220160"},"modified":"2020-03-16T13:28:55","modified_gmt":"2020-03-16T18:28:55","slug":"pro-life-victory-maryland-privacy-bill-pulled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-victory-maryland-privacy-bill-pulled\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-life victory in Maryland as so-called &#8216;privacy&#8217; bill is pulled"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a victory for pro-lifers in Maryland, a bill that would have laid the groundwork for unlimited abortion on demand was withdrawn after the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aclj.org\/pro-life\/victory-pro-abortion-bill-pulled-from-maryland-senate-after-aclj-legal-team-shows-up-to-testify-against-it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exposed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its true designs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mgaleg.maryland.gov\/mgawebsite\/Legislation\/Details\/sb0664\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senate Bill 664<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, titled \u201cDeclaration of Rights &#8211; Right to Privacy,\u201d purported to amend the state Constitution to \u201cestablish that each individual has a natural, essential, and inherent right to privacy that guarantees freedom from government intrusion.\u201d First introduced on February 3rd, the bill\u2019s sponsor State Senator <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mgaleg.maryland.gov\/mgawebsite\/Members\/Details\/lee?ys=2020RS\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susan Lee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> removed the bill from the agenda just moments before a scheduled March 11th hearing. The ACLJ, which had submitted written <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/media.aclj.org\/pdf\/Written-Testimony-of-Benjamin-P-Sisney-on-SB-664.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testimony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in advance of the hearing, was standing by to testify in person when Lee withdrew the bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ACLJ\u2019s meticulous written testimony exposed the abortion activism obscured by the bill\u2019s moderate-sounding rhetoric. Noting that \u201cunder the proposed bill, Maryland\u2019s constitution would be amended to include an unlimited and \u2018inherent right to privacy,\u2019\u201d the ACLJ\u2019s testimony pointed out that \u201c\u2018Privacy\u2019 is the same rubric under which the Supreme Court purported to find a constitutional right to abortion in Roe v. Wade.\u201d As a result, \u201cAn express privacy amendment therefore might be read as an invitation to find a right to abortion under the state constitution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maryland-abortionist-abortions-expired-medical-license\/\">Maryland abortionist allegedly committing abortions with expired medical license<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ACLJ\u2019s testimony noted that in other states around the country that have enshrined privacy as a constitutional right &#8212; including Alaska, California, and Florida &#8212; abortion activists have succeeded in advocating for a \u201cright to abortion\u201d based on these privacy measures. \u201cAs is clearly illustrated in these examples, any argument that claims \u2018privacy\u2019 doesn\u2019t include \u2018abortion\u2019 in today\u2019s culture is disingenuous and deceptive \u2013 or extremely na\u00efve, at best,\u201d the ACLJ <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aclj.org\/pro-life\/victory-pro-abortion-bill-pulled-from-maryland-senate-after-aclj-legal-team-shows-up-to-testify-against-it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the bill\u2019s introduction in February, Maryland pro-life leaders had been warning about the bill\u2019s deceitful pro-abortion designs. \u201cSenate Bill 664, a proposed amendment to the Maryland Constitution, deceivingly entitled Declaration of Rights \u2013 Right To Privacy, and never including the word abortion, would enshrine abortion of babies in their mother\u2019s womb through birth as a \u2018constitutional right,\u2019\u201d said Vincent Perticone, co-chair of Pro Life Carroll County in a February 19th letter to the editor published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/maryland\/carroll\/opinion\/cc-op-letters-021920-20200219-yqwm3hmypra4jc5uan573cvncu-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carroll County Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cPraying for God\u2019s help, we are uncompromisingly coming up against this proposed barbaric, grisly, legal right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the temporary victory, the ACLJ is clear-eyed about the continued threat posed by abortion activists who will press forward with similar legislation. \u201cWhile we are pleased with this week\u2019s victory in Maryland, we are fully aware that this issue will rise again; not only in Maryland, but in states across the country.
