Well, that\u2019s unclear, given that abortion has nothing at all to do with the coronavirus. Even still, several abortionists and abortion advocates\u00a0have taken to Twitter to stump for the public\u2019s \u201cright\u201d to access abortion pills via telemedicine (i.e., an online consultation without having to physically see a doctor).<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Dustin Costescu, an OBGYN, associate professor and &#8220;sexual medicine specialist&#8221; at\u00a0McMaster University, tweeted that \u201cself-managed abortion is safe\u201d and \u201cavoids in person appointments,\u201d inexplicably predicting that telemedicine abortion \u201cwill be necessary to address the increased incidence of unintended pregnancies that will result from self-quarantine.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID2019?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID2019<\/a> is a good time to remind you that Self-Managed abortion is safe, avoids in person appointments, and will be necessary to address the increased incidence of unintended pregnancies that will result from self-quarantine.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dr. Dustin Costescu (@BirthControlDoc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BirthControlDoc\/status\/1237177485336416258?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p data-slot-rendered-dynamic=\"true\">After claiming that at-home abortions via the abortion pill are \u201csafe,\u201d Costescu seemingly contradicted himself by adding that \u201cSystems need to be prepared to respond to possible complications from failed self-management, including ectopic pregnancy and bleeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Systems need to be prepared to respond to possible complications from failed self-management, including ectopic pregnancy and bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>But abortion by telemedicine or self management are safe and effective strategies to reduce visits during the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dr. Dustin Costescu (@BirthControlDoc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BirthControlDoc\/status\/1237179079578865671?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p data-slot-rendered-dynamic=\"true\">&#8220;But,&#8221; he simultaneously said, &#8220;abortion by telemedicine or self management are safe and effective strategies to reduce visits during the outbreak.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-dynamic=\"true\">Dr. Daniel Grossman, another vocal abortionist with a large Twitter following, retweeted Costescu\u2019s statements, adding that the coronavirus is \u201ca reminder of why we must expand telemedicine to patients, including for medication abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatients should have access to healthcare, whether they are able to make it to the clinic or not,\u201d he wrote. \u201cSelf-managed abortion and telemedicine can ensure they receive care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-no-longer-between-woman-doctor\/\">If the abortion industry has its way, abortion will no longer be \u2018between a woman and her doctor\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is also a reminder of why we must expand telemedicine to patients, including for medication abortion. Self-managed abortion and telemedicine can ensure they receive care. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lbYNOwMgbZ\">https:\/\/t.co\/lbYNOwMgbZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dr. Daniel Grossman (@DrDGrossman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrDGrossman\/status\/1237202552711786498?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The big push for online abortion pills prescribed via telemedicine comes just after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrctv.org\/blog\/ohio-house-passes-bill-banning-telemedicine-abortion-drugs\">Ohio state Senate passed a bill<\/a> that would outlaw telemedicine abortions within the state, requiring instead that\u00a0physicians be certified to distribute the drugs, as well as mandating that an in-person evaluation be conducted before a patient is prescribed the abortion medication.<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-dynamic=\"true\">The drug centers on two drugs.\u00a0Mifepristone, or \u201cMifeprex,\u201d is a synthetic steroid. When taken in conjunction with misoprostol, the combination carries\u00a0a 95 percent success rate of forcing\u00a0a\u00a0woman\u2019s body to miscarry.\u00a0Because of its function, it\u2019s recommended that the drug only be taken up until the 10th week of pregnancy.
