In the late 1970s, reporters and researchers staged a five-month investigation into Chicago&#8217;s &#8220;thriving abortion business,&#8221; headed by the Chicago Sun-Times and the Better Government Association. An AP report quoted the paper&#8217;s reasoning for the expose: &#8220;Our purpose was not to re-examine the morality of abortion &#8211; we favor legalized abortion &#8211; but to determine whether women were receiving the safe, competent care the Supreme Court had determined was their legal right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.dlib.nyu.edu\/undercover\/sites\/dlib.nyu.edu.undercover\/files\/documents\/uploads\/editors\/ChiSunTimes_1978Nov12_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first release<\/a> of the series, titled, &#8220;The Abortion Profiteers: Making a Killing in Michigan Ave. Clinics,&#8221; the authors made the following claims:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Some are pregnant; some are not. It doesn&#8217;t matter. Most of them will be sold abortions.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;For the abortion profiteers, there is money to be made and no time to waste.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The women don&#8217;t know it yet, but they are about to put their lives on the abortion assembly line.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_219799\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219799\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-219799\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Chicago-Sun-Times-The-Abortion-Profiteers.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Chicago Sun Times The Abortion Profiteers\" width=\"580\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Chicago-Sun-Times-The-Abortion-Profiteers.jpg 611w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Chicago-Sun-Times-The-Abortion-Profiteers-300x262.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Chicago-Sun-Times-The-Abortion-Profiteers-500x436.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-219799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chicago Sun Times The Abortion Profiteers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Authors <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.dlib.nyu.edu\/undercover\/sites\/dlib.nyu.edu.undercover\/files\/documents\/uploads\/editors\/ChiSunTimes_1978Nov12_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> they found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dozens of abortions committed on women who were not pregnant<\/li>\n<li>Incompetent and unqualified doctors including moonlighting residents, medical apprentices, and at least one physician who has lost his license<\/li>\n<li>Abortionists who callously committed abortions in an excruciating <em>two minutes<\/em> when they should properly take ten to fifteen minutes, as well as doctors who didn&#8217;t wait for anesthetics to take effect<\/li>\n<li>Facilities that either failed to order critical post-operative pathology reports, ignored the results, or mixed up the specimens<\/li>\n<li>Dangerously shoddy record keeping<\/li>\n<li>Counselors who were paid not to counsel but to sell abortions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_219818\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219818\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219818\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Chicago-Sun-Times-The-Abortion-Profiteers-abortion-assembly-line.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Chicago Sun Times The Abortion Profiteers abortion assembly line\" width=\"765\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Chicago-Sun-Times-The-Abortion-Profiteers-abortion-assembly-line.jpg 765w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Chicago-Sun-Times-The-Abortion-Profiteers-abortion-assembly-line-300x149.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Chicago-Sun-Times-The-Abortion-Profiteers-abortion-assembly-line-700x349.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Chicago-Sun-Times-The-Abortion-Profiteers-abortion-assembly-line-500x249.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-219818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chicago Sun Times The Abortion Profiteers abortion assembly line<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Authors detailed how some staffers were paid a commission to probe a patient&#8217;s &#8220;fears and misgivings.&#8221; They noted how abortion facility telephones &#8211; used by counselors to convince women to purchase abortions &#8211; were the &#8220;most valuable single tool of the abortion trade.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They sell abortions like other hucksters sell food freezer plans or slick magazines,&#8221; reporters wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t tell them it hurts,&#8221; the report claimed one undercover counselor was told. &#8220;Don&#8217;t answer too many questions because the patient gets too nervous and the next thing you know they&#8217;ll be out the door.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Look, no matter how you put it, we&#8217;re in the business of selling abortions,&#8221;\u00a0they quoted one hotline operator as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The authors discovered other serious issues with patient care:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;&#8230;[O]n the abortion assembly lines, the workers invent the vital signs. Measuring them takes too much time.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;In one clinic, the procedure rooms were cleaned between operations by wiping up the blood with wet Kleenex.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;I tried to get the blood off the floor from the first girl, while I was bent over trying to wipe it up the next girl was brought in. There was still this bloody towel on the table,&#8221; [an undercover investigator] stated.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The doctors race each other&#8230; they compete to see who can get the most patients done.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;In their haste, some doctors miss tissue that should have come out. Doctors&#8217; haste also may account for their failure to wait the few minutes it takes for anesthetics to take effect&#8230;. Women who scream are told to shut up. Others thrash around and are held down by aides.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The recovery room&#8230; is the place where women recover fast. They have to. After 15 minutes, they are told to get out.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Post operative care&#8230;. Money, say some Chicago abortionists, is essential first.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/time-journalists-expose-abortion-industry-again\/\">It\u2019s time for journalists to expose the corrupt abortion industry again<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a later report, the authors called the state&#8217;s regulation of these abortion facilities &#8220;slipshod&#8221; and noted that the health &#8220;[d]epartment&#8230; does not even know how many have died from their abortions.&#8221; In subsequent reports, the paper referred to the investigation as their &#8220;abortion racket series&#8221; exposing how government agencies tasked to protect the taxpayers failed abysmally, allowing abortion profiteers to scam their agencies by fraudulently obtaining Medicaid dollars to pay for abortions. &#8220;The Illinois Public Aid Department has improperly asked for &#8211; and received &#8211; more than $1 million in federal Medicaid funds for abortions performed on poor women&#8230;. [P]reliminary findings of a HEW [Health, Education, and Welfare Department]\u00a0 audit show that the state &#8220;improperly&#8221; billed HEW more than $1 million for 12,600 abortions not eligible for federal financing under the Medicaid program,&#8221; authors wrote, according to a November 29, 1978 reprint of the Sun-Times article by the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph.<\/p>\n<p>Today, cases of Medicaid fraud, unqualified or unlicensed abortionists, and abortion quotas are commonplace and reveal that little has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/time-journalists-expose-abortion-industry-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changed<\/a> when it comes to trusting those who profit from abortion.
