The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act both died today on the Senate floor. The two bills were blocked after short debate because the motions to proceed failed to reach the required cloture — or 60 votes — in favor of moving the legislation forward for actual votes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act<\/span><\/a> was introduced by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and would have protected preborn children in the U.S. from abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The United States is one of only seven countries in the world, including China and North Korea, that allows elective abortion after this point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a <\/span>2020 Marist poll<\/span><\/a>, 55 percent of Americans support banning abortion after five months. This includes 45 percent of self-identified pro-choicers. A <\/span>WomanTrend poll<\/span><\/a> from 2017 found that 78 percent of Millennial voters, 67 percent of women voters, and 70 percent of African-American voters all support abortion bans after five months.<\/span><\/p>\n
