{"id":217859,"date":"2020-02-11T16:40:01","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T22:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=217859"},"modified":"2021-04-18T20:48:24","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T01:48:24","slug":"abortion-pill-investor-millions-generic-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-investor-millions-generic-company\/","title":{"rendered":"UNCOVERED: Abortion pill investor now pouring millions into generic abortion pill company"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Live Action News recently uncovered the fact that one original investor in the abortion pill&#8217;s manufacturer is also now financially supporting a company producing a generic version of the abortion pill &#8212; all while pushing\u00a0for the expansion of abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion pill manufacturer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DANCO Laboratories<\/a>, a highly <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secretive company<\/a>,\u00a0was started with funding from several abortion philanthropy groups, including the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, which has invested well over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Packard_MIR_2015OCT51.pdf\">$14.2 million<\/a>\u00a0in the manufacturer since at least the year 2000. That was the year that Mifeprex was approved and brought to the U.S. by the eugenics-founded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Population Council<\/a>.\u00a0It has now come to light that the Packard Foundation has <em>also<\/em>\u00a0been investing millions in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-die-abortion-pill-fda-generic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GenBioPro<\/a>, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/genbiopro.com\/about-genbiopro-patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">company<\/a> producing a generic version of the abortion pill &#8212;\u00a0approximately $2 million in 2015, according to a recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Continuation-of-Part-VII-B-Line-5-C-Expenditure-Responsibility-Statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IRS document<\/a>\u00a0(below) as well as\u00a0hundreds of thousands more in the past few years:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$185K\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/genbiopro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016<\/a>\u00a0for &#8220;increasing access to reproductive health services.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>$100K\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/genbiopro-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017<\/a>\u00a0for &#8220;the development, submission and executing of a pre-investigational new drug.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Packard&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/about-the-foundation\/how-we-operate\/investments-finance\/form-990-pf\/2018-990-pf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 statements<\/a>\u00a0appear to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/990-PF-STATEMENTS-1-30.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicate<\/a>\u00a0that $500,000 has been set aside for the generic abortion pill company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_217868\" style=\"width: 664px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-217868\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-217868\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Packard-Foundation-funds-generic-abortion-pill-GenBioPro-2-million-in-2015.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Packard Foundation funds generic abortion pill GenBioPro 2 million in 2015\" width=\"654\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Packard-Foundation-funds-generic-abortion-pill-GenBioPro-2-million-in-2015.jpg 762w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Packard-Foundation-funds-generic-abortion-pill-GenBioPro-2-million-in-2015-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Packard-Foundation-funds-generic-abortion-pill-GenBioPro-2-million-in-2015-700x456.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Packard-Foundation-funds-generic-abortion-pill-GenBioPro-2-million-in-2015-500x325.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 654px) 100vw, 654px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-217868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Packard Foundation funds generic abortion pill GenBioPro &#8211; $2 million in 2015<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In\u00a0April 2019, the FDA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-die-abortion-pill-fda-generic\/\">approved<\/a> GenBioPro, Inc.\u2019s abbreviated new drug application for a generic Mifeprex (which, when used with Misoprostol, is approved as an abortion pill regimen). The FDA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/Drugs\/DrugSafety\/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders\/ucm492705.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>\u00a0(emphasis added),\u00a0\u201cThis approval reflects FDA\u2019s determination that GenBioPro\u2019s product, Mifepristone Tablets, 200 mg, is therapeutically equivalent to Mifeprex and can be safely substituted for Mifeprex.\u00a0<strong>Like Mifeprex, the approved generic product is indicated for the medical termination of intrauterine pregnancy through 70 days gestation<\/strong>\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Packard would <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190517205834\/https:\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/gynuity-health-projects-llc\/\">go on<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160315230721\/http:\/gynuity.org\/about\/partners\/donors\/\">fund<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-pushing-home-abortions\/\">Gynuity Health Projects,<\/a> which is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-pushing-home-abortions\/\">conducting<\/a> abortion pill <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT02513043?term=gynuity%2C+abortion&amp;recrs=a&amp;draw=2&amp;rank=1\">clinical trials<\/a>, as well as a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-funded-abortion-pill-investor-buffett-foundation\/\">studies<\/a>, to further increase access to the pills. Gynuity &#8212; which is also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibisreproductivehealth.org\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/publications\/Ibis%202016%20990.pdf\">funded<\/a> by Ibis Reproductive Health (see <a href=\"https:\/\/ibisreproductivehealth.org\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/publications\/Ibis%202017%20990.pdf\">2017 990<\/a> report), an organization directly <a href=\"https:\/\/ibisreproductivehealth.org\/funders\">funded<\/a> by DANCO Laboratories &#8212; even recruited children and adult women from outside the U.S. for an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-study-second-trimester-minority\/\">experimental abortion pill trial<\/a> for late-term abortions.\u00a0Packard also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposed-conflicts-interest-abortion-pill\/\">funds<\/a> studies (published in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/can-we-trust-new-study-claiming-women-certain-about-abortions\/\">Journal Contraception<\/a>) which claim that self-managed abortion is safe and that the FDA&#8217;s pill safety protocols are unnecessary. The clear conflict of interest is not noted in those studies. The FDA\u2019s REMS\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/aboutfda\/transparency\/basics\/ucm325201.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy<\/a>), is \u201ca safety strategy to manage a known or potential serious risk associated with a medicine and to enable patients to have continued access to such medicines by managing their safe use.\u201d But the media continues to turn a blind eye to this blatant financial conflict.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1YuYvyIGWlM\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GenBioPro&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/genbiopro.com\/about-genbiopro-provider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about us<\/a>&#8221; page states, &#8220;GenBioPro is helping to advance medical research to improve women\u2019s health. We are committed to eliminating barriers and to supporting the community of providers, patients, and advocates working to ensure universal access to reproductive health care.&#8221; The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/genbiopro.com\/about-medical-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>\u00a0marketing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/genbiopro.com\/about-medical-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refers<\/a>\u00a0to medication abortion as &#8220;common&#8221;\u00a0 and refers interested parties to visit &#8220;health care providers who have enrolled in the GenBioPro Provider Program,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/genbiopro.com\/about-medical-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">such as<\/a>\u00a0Planned Parenthood, the National Abortion Federation and others.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/112118\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/112118\/download&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581532981027000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHQlCNvcpqNQY3K6GNbwQYBAu6ZnQ\">FDA<\/a>, \u201cThe estimated number of women who have used mifepristone in the U.S. for the medical termination of pregnancy through the end of December 2018 is approximately 3.7 million women\u2026.\u201d GenBioPro\u2019s generic Mifeprex\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/genbiopro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/genbiopro-is-it-right-for-you.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/genbiopro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/genbiopro-is-it-right-for-you.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581532981027000&amp;usg=AFQjCNECbuKuKniWkMjGVeXzJwuWNZxzEA\">online pamphlet<\/a> indicates that, \u201cEvery year in the United States, more than 200,000 women manage their unwanted pregnancy through medical abortion.\u201d The company then makes clear that, \u201c<strong>2-7%\u2014will need a follow-up surgical procedure to end their pregnancy or to stop too much bleeding<\/strong>\u201d (emphasis added). Using the 200,000 number, this would mean that 4,000 to 14,000 abortion pill patients run the risk of needing a second more invasive surgical abortion. However, more accurate Guttmacher Institute numbers indicate that in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/abortion-incidence-service-availability-us-2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/abortion-incidence-service-availability-us-2017.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581532981027000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGNu3cE_cp0z1o_wrKXzGRLJLSpGg\">2017<\/a>, there were <em>339,640<\/em> medication abortions out of 862,320 total <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/us-abortion-rate-lowest-roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/us-abortion-rate-lowest-roe-v-wade\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581532981027000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGE89FpPfBRGUcfc8Kv6LVnDKwFwg\">reported<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; therefore, abortion pill failure rates could actually be as high as <strong>7,000 to 24,000 annually<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The abortion pill currently accounts for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-medication-abortion-nearly-40-percent-abortions\/\">40 percent<\/a> of all reported abortions in the United states. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/112118\/download\">FDA<\/a>, \u201cThe estimated number of women who have used mifepristone [not the generic version] in the U.S. for the medical termination of pregnancy through the end of December 2018 is approximately 3.7 million women\u2026.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/downloads\/Drugs\/DrugSafety\/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders\/UCM603000.pdf\">2018<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the FDA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/Drugs\/DrugSafety\/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders\/ucm492705.htm\">updated<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its adverse effects reports on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legally<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dispensed abortion pills, revealing <\/span><b>24 deaths<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women associated with the abortion pill since its approval. The report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-die-abortion-pill-fda-generic\/\">documents<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that abortion pills have caused nearly 4,200 reported adverse effects, including 1,042 hospitalizations, nearly 600 instances of blood loss requiring transfusions and other serious complications. But under <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/nda\/2016\/020687Orig1s020RemsR.pdf\">2016 changes<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Mifeprex&#8217;s abortion pill manufacturer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/\">DANCO<\/a>\u00a0(and now GenBioPro)\u00a0<b><i>no longer has to <\/i><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-men-legalize-expand-abortion\/\"><b><i>report<\/i><\/b><\/a><b><i> non-fatal adverse effects<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so we have no way of knowing what the number of abortion pill complications truly is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/dangerous-abortion-pills-another-woman-drugged-and-loses-child\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking Mifeprex and misoprosto<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba-list.org\/newsroom\/press-releases\/abortion-drug-expansion-endangers-womens-health-safety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">results<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/412949\/planned-parenthood-polices-itself-donna-harrison\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four times as many complications as surgical abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Around one in twenty women will require surgery to complete the abortion or will end up in the emergency room \u2013 not to mention the potential for emotional trauma, when one\u2019s own home becomes the place of one\u2019s abortion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note, 2\/13\/20: An earlier version of this article stated abortion pill failure range as &#8220;7,000 to 48,000 annually.&#8221; It has been corrected to read &#8220;70,00 to 24,000 annually.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Editor&#8217;s Note, 4\/18\/21<\/strong>:\u00a0The FDA has received reports of serious adverse events in women who took Mifeprex. As of December 31, 2018, there were reports of 24 deaths of women associated with Mifeprex since the product was approved in September 2000, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy resulting in death; and several cases of severe systemic infection (also called sepsis), including some that were fatal.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The adverse events cannot with certainty be causally attributed to mifepristone because of concurrent use of other drugs, other medical or surgical treatments, co-existing medical conditions, and information gaps about patient health status and clinical management of the patient.
