Senator Kevin Cramer of North Dakota\u00a0introduced a bill<\/a> into the U.S. Senate on Tuesday that would allow pregnant women to receive child support, even before giving birth.\u00a0The bill, titled the Unborn Child Support Act<\/a>, is co-sponsored by Cramer and five other senators, including Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK).<\/p>\n

Under the Unborn Child Support Act, a judge could require a father to provide child support throughout pregnancy and retroactively up to the month of conception as determined by a physician. Under the provisions of the bill, the mother does not have to ask for child support if she does not want the father to be involved. The bill also mandates that a paternity test be administered only if the mother wants one, providing that it does not in any way put the child’s life at risk.<\/p>\n

\u201cLife begins at conception, period,\u201d said<\/a> Sen. Inhofe in a press release. \u201cWhen you realize this, it is easy to support legislation that recognizes the unborn for what they are: living human beings with inherent worth. I am proud to join Senator Cramer in introducing the Unborn Child Support Act, straightforward legislation that provides mothers with the option to receive child support payments while their child is in the womb. We must keep fighting to protect the dignity of every human being and ensure that we support mothers in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n

Currently, each state has its own child support laws, but most take effect after the child is born. This bill aims to establish a blanket standard for moms who need support through their pregnancy. \u201cLife begins at conception. Our laws should reflect that truth, especially when it comes to helping mothers provide for the welfare of their children,\u201d\u00a0said Sen. Cramer.\u00a0\u201cIf we are going to be pro-life, we should be pro-all-of-life and ensure we give moms the support they need.\u201d<\/p>\n
