It analyzed state data to argue that various pro-life policies increased state maternal mortality rates.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, this study purportedly found that state level pro-life laws which limit late-term abortions increase the maternal mortality rate. It also purportedly found that reductions in Planned Parenthood facilities also result in an increased rate of maternal mortality. This study was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-maternal-mortality\/u-s-state-laws-contributing-to-rises-in-pregnancy-related-deaths-idUSKBN1YO2AE\">covered by Reuters<\/a> and was subsequently picked up by a number of other <a href=\"https:\/\/wkzo.com\/news\/articles\/2019\/dec\/20\/us-state-laws-contributing-to-rises-in-pregnancy-related-deaths\/968556\/?refer-section=health\">news outlets<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, these findings should be treated with caution. Another recent study that used state data to calculate and analyze maternal mortality rates contained significant errors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washington-post-no-proof-pro-life-mortality\/\">Washington Post: No proof that pro-life laws worsen maternal mortality rate<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, an<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article published in<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obstetrics and Gynecology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used state mortality data to report<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sharp increase in the maternal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mortality rate in Texas. Many commentators were quick to blame state funding<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cuts to Planned<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parenthood &#8212; <em>even though the reported increase in the maternal<\/em><\/span><em> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mortality rate took place<\/span> <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>before the funding cuts took effect<\/em>. More importantly, revised data<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obstetrics<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Gynecology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2018 found that the actual maternal mortality rate<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Texas was <em>half<\/em> of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what was previously reported.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, there are methodological problems with the recent <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Preventive Medicine <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors were only able to analyze 4,767 of the 6,620 maternal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deaths that took place between 2007 and 2015, which means 28 percent of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maternal deaths were not analyzed. Similarly, data from only 38 of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 50 states was analyzed in this study. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some economic factors that might impact maternal mortality rates &#8211; like the state poverty rate &#8211; are not held constant in the study. Additionally, the fact that limits on late-term abortion are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">correlated with statistically<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant increases in maternal mortality rates seems unusual. This is because many of these limits are unenforced and only a relatively small<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">percentage of abortions are performed in the third trimester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another methodological problem is that the study analyzes percentage fluctuations in the number of Planned<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parenthood facilities. The number of Planned Parenthood facilities in each state varies widely<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is possible that the closure of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one Planned Parenthood facility in a low population state might<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">represent a large percentage decrease and distort the results. For<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instance, the lone<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood in Washington, D.C., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/planned-parenthood-in-washington-dc-to-close\">shut down in 2015<\/a>. The study reports that D.C. had a 100 percent decline between 2007 and 2015. This is misleading<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a couple reasons. First, DC residents would have been able to access Planned Parenthood<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facilities in nearby Maryland. Second, a new Planned Parenthood facility<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/dcs-only-planned-parenthood-facility-is-open-and-ready-to-see-patients\/2016\/09\/27\/6d89326c-84cb-11e6-92c2-14b64f3d453f_story.html\">opened in D.C. in 2016<\/a>. Overall, it would have been more<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methodologically appropriate to consider changes in Planned Parenthood facilities<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">per capita.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-maternal-mortality-no-planned-parenthood\/\">No, Texas\u2019 maternal mortality rate did not spike after defunding Planned Parenthood<\/a><\/em><br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the study analyzes a considerable amount of data that is not particularly useful. For<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instance, for each U.S. state, the authors calculate the respective maternal mortality<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rate for Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, and other races. While this sounds<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fine, many states have a small population of racial and ethnic<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minorities. For example, analyzing the maternal mortality rate of African<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American women in North Dakota provides us with little information about the factors which impact maternal mortality rates, because<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relatively few African American women of childbearing age live in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Dakota. Furthermore, when analyzing a low population demographic, even <em>one<\/em> maternal death would make the maternal mortality rate look<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exceptionally high and could potentially distort the results.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, this <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Preventive Health<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study is the latest in a long line of attempts to try make the case that pro-life policies worsen public health. In contrast, however, good research shows that pro-life laws improve public health outcomes. Since Texas excluded Planned Parenthood from the state family planning program in 2011, there has been a 57 percent decline in the abortion rate for minors, and a 49 percent decline in the birth rate for minors in the Lone Star State.\u00a0 Ireland, which up until recently protected the preborn, has had consistently lower maternal mortality rates than Britain and Scotland where abortion has been legal for a long time. Unfortunately, these kinds of statistics are rarely, if ever, cited by mainstream media outlets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael J.
