{"id":215746,"date":"2019-12-22T09:00:01","date_gmt":"2019-12-22T15:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=215746"},"modified":"2019-12-21T22:17:21","modified_gmt":"2019-12-22T04:17:21","slug":"senators-fda-removing-abortion-pill-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/senators-fda-removing-abortion-pill-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Senators work to prevent FDA from removing abortion pill safety protocols"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This past Tuesday, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lankford.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/senator-lankford-cosponsors-legislation-to-protect-moms-and-babies-from-abortion\">along with<\/a> Senator James Lankford (R-OK), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Steve Daines (R-MT), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Ben Sasse (R-NE), Rick Scott (R-FL), and Roger Wicker (R-MS) &#8212; introduced the Support and Value Expectant (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydesmith.senate.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2019-12\/Support%20and%20Value%20Expectant%20%28SAVE%29%20Moms%20and%20Babies%20Act%20-%20one%20pager.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAVE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) Moms &amp; Babies Act, to prevent the further expansion of abortion drugs. Similar to the House version of the bill <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/save-moms-babies-fda-safeguards-abortion-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in September by Representative Bob Latta (R-OH), the bill would prevent the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA) from loosening its safety regulations &#8212; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) &#8212; for the abortion pill regimen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the bill <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevents approval of any new abortion drugs by the FDA and prohibits mail-order abortions, or telabortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sen. Hyde-Smith&#8217;s office said in a press release:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although abortion rates are declining nationwide, rates of chemical abortion are increasing dramatically. Increased use of abortion pills may give the impression that these procedures are safe, when in fact they are quite dangerous.\u00a0 Making chemical abortion pills more broadly available without proper medical oversight would endanger the lives of women. I am introducing this bill to codify the important FDA policy that protects women from dangers inherent in mail-order or do-it-yourself chemical abortions.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/six-ways-dangerous-diy-abortions\/\">Six ways the abortion industry is pushing for dangerous \u2018DIY\u2019 abortions<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The abortion pill regimen includes two drugs. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first, Mifepristone\/Mifeprex, is a pill that blocks the progesterone in the woman\u2019s body going to her preborn baby. When progesterone is blocked in a pregnant woman, her uterine lining breaks down, cutting off blood and nutrients to the baby and killing him or her. The second pill, Misoprostol, causes cramping, contractions, and heavy bleeding to force the baby out. The abortion pill regimen is typically used to abort preborn children up to 10 weeks in utero, though <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT03269279?term=gynuity&amp;recrs=a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experiments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are being conducted on West African women up to 22 weeks gestation by Gynuity, the same company pushing the regimen in the U.S.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently under <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/mifeprex-mifepristone-information\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REMS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion pill regimen can only \u201cbe dispensed in certain healthcare settings, specifically, clinics, medical offices and hospitals, by or under the supervision of a certified prescriber.\u201d It is not available in retail pharmacies, and it is \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/questions-and-answers-mifeprex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not legally available over the Internet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d The FDA is under immense pressure from the abortion industry to lift REMS so that abortion pills can be sold online and over the counter without a doctor\u2019s visit or prescription. Distributing the pill without doctors&#8217; supervision or an ultrasound to date the pregnancy and rule out an ectopic pregnancy is an extremely dangerous proposition that puts women&#8217;s lives at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the abortion pill regimen was approved in 2000, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/112118\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women have experienced<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<em>at least<\/em>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4,195 recorded cases of adverse effects, 1,042 hospitalizations excluding death, 599 instances of blood loss requiring transfusions, 412 infections (69 severe), and 24 maternal deaths. In addition, a previous report from Live Action News noted that &#8220;As of 2016, adverse effects of the pills <em>are no longer required to be reported.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0Only <em>deaths<\/em> from
