{"id":215704,"date":"2019-12-21T12:49:35","date_gmt":"2019-12-21T18:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=215704"},"modified":"2019-12-20T10:18:53","modified_gmt":"2019-12-20T16:18:53","slug":"march-for-life-born-alive-protection-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/march-for-life-born-alive-protection-act\/","title":{"rendered":"March for Life to highlight Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2019\/12\/12\/march-for-life-to-highlight-born-alive-abortion-survivors-protection-act\/\">Daily Signal<\/a>)\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/marchforlife.org\/mfl-2020\/\">March for Life<\/a> aims to foster a culture where abortion becomes \u201cunthinkable.\u201d To that end, Jeanne Mancini, president of the group that sponsors the annual pro-life march in Washington each January, says it will work to draw the public\u2019s attention to the proposed Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation stipulates that if a baby survives an attempted abortion and draws breath, the abortionist or clinic would be required to take the baby to a hospital, rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2018\/01\/17\/survivor-saline-abortion-wants-congress-pass-born-alive-bill\/\">leaving it in a closet<\/a> to die, as happened in one well-documented case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetermining the proper treatment is for medical professionals to decide, not politicians in Congress,\u201d Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said in arguing against the bill in the House. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2019\/02\/25\/only-3-democrat-senators-vote-for-bill-protecting-babies-born-alive-after-abortion\/\">Only three<\/a> Senate Democrats voted in favor of the bill when it came up for a vote in late February.<\/p>\n<p>March organizers hope the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act will be reintroduced in the next session of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-lifers\u2019 concern for these unwanted babies \u201cis such a contrast\u201d with the attitudes of pro-abortion legislators, said Tom McClusky, the March for Life\u2019s vice president of government affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t even an abortion issue,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a baby, born alive after an abortion. It\u2019s just amazing, in this day and age, that people don\u2019t understand this is actually an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionist-investigators-hearing-babies-born-alive\/\">Abortionist at undercover investigators\u2019 hearing: \u2018No question\u2019 babies are born alive<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>McClusky said that the March for Life, held each January to demonstrate disapproval of the Jan. 22, 1973, Supreme Court ruling\u00a0 in Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion nationwide, is \u201csupportive of any [law] that changes the culture\u201d to protect life.<\/p>\n<p>Mancini and McClusky also announced that the speakers at next month\u2019s March for Life on Jan. 24 in Washington, D.C., will include Louisiana state Sen.-elect Katrina Jackson, a black Democrat. As a state representative, she authored Louisiana\u2019s Unsafe Abortion Protection Act, which would require abortionists to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles.<\/p>\n<p>The Louisiana Legislature enacted the Unsafe Abortion Protection Act in 2014, and the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the law in 2018. But in February, the Supreme Court temporarily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2019\/02\/supreme-court-blocks-enforcement-of-louisiana-abortion-law\/\">blocked<\/a> the law from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/louisiana-abortion-case-supreme-court-state-could-become-first-without-abortion-access-next-year-2019-10-18\/\">taking effect<\/a>, and the justices are expected to hear the case next month.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking will be Republican U.S. Reps. Ann Wagner of Missouri and Chris Smith of New Jersey, sponsors of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act; and abortion survivors Melissa Ohden and Claire Culwell.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the efforts of the March for Life, Mancini said, she doubts Americans will see an end to abortion anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a little bit less hopeful that that\u2019s in our immediate future,\u201d she said, but \u201cwe will work ardently day in and day out to change both the law and hearts and minds until that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mancini said she finds hope in the enthusiasm of young people who participate in the March for Life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always incredibly inspiring to get to a few days before the March for Life and see all the young people come in.
