{"id":215310,"date":"2019-12-12T17:47:30","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T23:47:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=215310"},"modified":"2019-12-12T15:47:36","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T21:47:36","slug":"one-third-independent-abortion-closed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/one-third-independent-abortion-closed\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: One third of independent abortion facilities have closed since 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortioncarenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/CommunitiesNeedClinics2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> on the state of &#8220;independent abortion clinics&#8221; published by the Abortion Care Network (ACN) reveals <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-facilities-closing-unprecedented-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yet again<\/a> that &#8220;independent clinics are closing at an unprecedented rate.&#8221; ACN, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortioncarenetwork.org\/end-harassment\/celebrate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celebrates abortion<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090615182505\/http:\/\/www.abortioncarenetwork.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=blogcategory&amp;id=28&amp;Itemid=27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began<\/a> operating July 2008 and was founded by leaders from the National Coalition of Abortion Providers (NCAP) and Abortion Conversation Project (ACP). According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/2000-20-million-abortions-declining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a>,\u00a0between 2000 and 2017, a total of\u00a020,057,120 abortions were reported to the Guttmacher Institute.\u00a0Over one quarter (26%) of all the abortion procedures (5,281,838) committed in those 18 years were committed by taxpayer-funded Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_212661\" style=\"width: 423px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212661\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212661\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-and-Planned-Parenthood-totals-and-MktShare-2000-to-2017.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion and Planned Parenthood totals and MktShare 2000 to 2017 (Image: Live Action News)\" width=\"413\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-and-Planned-Parenthood-totals-and-MktShare-2000-to-2017.jpg 413w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-and-Planned-Parenthood-totals-and-MktShare-2000-to-2017-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-212661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion and Planned Parenthood totals and MktShare 2000 to 2017 (Image: Live Action News)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since 2012, ACN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortioncarenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/CommunitiesNeedClinics2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claims<\/a> they collected data &#8220;on every abortion clinic in the United States that makes abortion care services publicly available or otherwise discloses that they provide abortion care.&#8221; ACN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortioncarenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/CommunitiesNeedClinics2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a> they then comb through public search engines to locate abortion providers and contact each one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to ACN:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Currently, six states have only one abortion clinic remaining.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2012, IACs declined from 510 to 344 in 2019.<\/li>\n<li>While a\u00a0handful of facilities have opened, ACN reports, &#8220;the total number of independent clinics&#8230; decreased by over 32 percent since 2012.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Since 2014, ACN identified 136 independent abortion facility closures.<\/li>\n<li>Between 2018 and 2019, 39 independent abortion facilities (IACs) closed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>IAC closures by year (ACN):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>23 IACs closed in 2014<\/li>\n<li>34 IACs closed in 2015<\/li>\n<li>22 IACs closed in 2016<\/li>\n<li>17 IACs closed in 2017<\/li>\n<li>13 IACs closed in 2018<\/li>\n<li>26 IACs closed in 2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;A clinic is considered closed if a) the clinic or practice closed entirely, or b) if the clinic or practice remains open but no longer provides abortion care services. Wade.<\/li>\n<li>Vermont passed the Freedom of Choice Act.<\/li>\n<li>Nevada passed the Trust Nevada Women Act.<\/li>\n<li>Maine passed a law allowing physician assistants and advanced practice nurses to provide abortions and a law requiring Medicaid and private health insurance plans to cover abortion.<\/li>\n<li>California passed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/will-fund-abortion-pills-california-campuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College Student<\/a> Right to Access Act.<\/li>\n<li>Austin, Texas, and New York City allocated $150,000 and $250,000, respectively, to abortion access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ACN holds annual meetings where the abortion pill manufacturer, DANCO Laboratories, and Guttmacher have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortioncarenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/acn2017conferenceprogram-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">listed<\/a> as exhibitors. The largest provider of abortions in the U.S. is Planned Parenthood, and as Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-more-abortion-less-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented, despite the declining numbers, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s market share of abortions has steadily climbed from 31.5% in 2011 to roughly 35% in 2014 to\u00a0nearly <strong>39%<\/strong>\u00a0(38.5%)\u00a0in 2017. That translates into a lot of money, with Planned Parenthood\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/over-half-planned-parenthood-revenue-abortion\/\">estimated<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/over-half-planned-parenthood-revenue-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion revenue<\/a>\u00a0totaling $190 million\u00a0in just 2017. This might explain a recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/12\/01\/us\/politics\/abortion-planned-parenthood.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by the New York Times indicating growing dissension, discord, and a fragmented abortion landscape among providers &#8212; and specifically between ICAs and Planned Parenthood:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;[I]nterviews\u00a0with more than\u00a050 reproductive\u00a0rights leaders, clinic directors, political strategists and activists over the past three months reveal a fragmented movement facing longstanding divisions \u2014 cultural, financial and political. Many said that abortion rights advocates and leading reproductive rights groups had made several crucial miscalculations that have put them on the defensive&#8230;Discord at Planned Parenthood, the nation\u2019s largest and most influential\u00a0abortion provider, exacerbated the problem. In July the group\u2019s new president,\u00a0Dr. Leana Wen, was forced out in a messy departure highlighting deep internal division over her\u00a0management\u00a0style and how much emphasis to place on the political fight for abortion rights&#8230;Amid the high political maneuvering, there are fundamental internal divisions that the abortion rights movement has not resolved, especially between Planned Parenthood\u00a0and the independent clinics that perform most abortion procedures&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;&#8230;This has led to close alignment with the Democratic Party. In recent years, Planned Parenthood has become one of the biggest sources of volunteer power for Democratic campaigns. In 2018,\u00a0the group\u2019s political\u00a0arm gave more than $1.1 million to Democrats and just $5,735 to Republicans,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/orgs\/totals.php?id=D000000591&amp;cycle=2018\">according to data<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0Center for Responsive Politics.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Prayerful presence outside abortion facilities, along with pro-life legislation is being credited for many clinic closures.
