(CNS News\/MRC<\/a>) Last month, the pro-life group Americans United for Life (AUL) released the results of a survey<\/a> on abortion clinic regulations commissioned through YouGov. The results indicated that super-majorities of Americans favor common sense regulations abortion facilities.<\/p>\n

Specifically, it found that 75 percent of respondents think that abortion doctors should be held to the same medical standards as any other physicians. Similarly, the poll also found that 70 percent want to hold abortion facilities to the same standards as hospitals. Finally, the results indicate that 78 percent of respondents believe physicians performing abortions should be able to transfer patients directly to emergency rooms.<\/p>\n

These new polling results are welcome addition to the ongoing national debate over sanctity of life issues. While there is probably more polling data on abortion than any other public policy issue \u2013 many specific abortion policy questions have often received little attention from pollsters or survey research firms.<\/p>\n

For instance, Gallup<\/a> has asked respondents if they are \u201cpro-life\u201d or \u201cpro-choice\u201d over 50 times since 1995. However, they have only asked about limits on third trimester abortions six times, waiting periods four times, and parental involvement laws five times.<\/p>\n

Abortion clinic regulations are another issue where there is relatively little polling data. In fact, there are only a couple other polls which have asked about this issue.\u00a0 A June 2016 Knights of Columbus\/Marist poll<\/a> also found that super-majorities support requiring abortion doctors to hold hospital admitting privileges and holding abortion clinics to the same standards as outpatient surgery centers.<\/p>\n

A 2015 Reuters poll<\/a> dealt with abortion clinic regulations in Texas that the U.S. Supreme Court eventually struck down in Whole Woman\u2019s Health vs. Hellerstedt. <\/em>This poll found that a plurality or Americans felt that these regulations were intended to make abortion clinics safer, rather than make it difficult or impossible for women to obtain abortions.<\/p>\n

This October, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear June Medical Services v. Gee<\/em>, \u00a0a case involving the constitutionality of a Louisiana law which requires that any doctor performing an abortion to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. This will certainly increase the salience of health and safety regulations for abortion clinics in the coming months.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, there is plenty of evidence that Supreme Court decisions about morality policy issues are often sensitive to public attitudes. As such, AUL should be commended for commissioning this poll, which demonstrates that regulations of abortion clinics enjoy widespread public support.<\/p>\n
