Locals fishing at a pond were shocked to discover the remains of preborn children tossed nearby last month in West Bengal, India. The individuals found a blood-soaked bag late in the afternoon, and when they opened it, they saw the remains of aborted preborn children.<\/p>\n

\u201cNearly 24 foetuses have been found. The administration is looking into it,\u201d said<\/a> Tapan Saha, Chief Health Officer of Habra.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe blood-stained sack was first spotted by locals when they gathered to catch fish from the pond at Mogra at 4.30 pm. When they opened it, they found containers filled with foetuses,\u201d said a police officer.<\/p>\n

Abortion is legal up to 20 weeks in India when a doctor decides it poses a risk to the mother’s life, physical health or mental health or when there is a risk of the child having a disability. Abortion is also legal up to 20 weeks in cases of rape. With a judge’s permission, abortions can be committed beyond 20 weeks as well. These recently discovered abortion victims are said to have been small and therefore possibly young. One report described them as “embryos” while another referred to them as “fetuses.”<\/p>\n

The preborn children’s bodies have been taken to Habra State General Hospital to be examined. Police believe that local nursing homes participating in illegal abortions may have dumped the bodies and they have filed a case against individuals who have yet to be identified.<\/p>\n

According to Indian Express<\/a>, the number of illegal abortion centers has been rising in certain areas, and police believe that nursing homes are collaborating with doctors to commit the abortions along with using middlemen to dispose of the bodies.<\/p>\n

In July<\/a>, India’s Supreme Court submitted a petition to decriminalize abortion, stating that restricting abortion “puts an undue burden on the exercise of free reproductive choice and renders it meaningless.” Hypocritically, the Supreme Court continued by stating, “This provision in substance makes the\u00a0right to terminate pregnancy<\/em> an exception, which is otherwise recognized as an important facet of right to life, human dignity<\/em> and self determination.” (emphasis added)<\/p>\n

Proposed changes<\/a> to the abortion law in India, according to the Economic Times, include allowing abortion at any time during pregnancy for certain disabilities, increasing the limit to 24 weeks, and doing away with any gestational limit for cases of “severe fetal abnormalities.” An additional and potentially dangerous proposed law change is allowing nurses, midwives, and homeopaths to commit abortions.<\/p>\n

An estimated<\/a> 50 million girls and women are missing from India’s population because of gendercide that includes discriminatory abortion. Sex-selective abortion is illegal, but not enforced, allowing 700,000 preborn baby girls to be aborted every year just because they are girls. That amounts to one girl aborted every minute.<\/p>\n

While the Supreme Court of India seeks to relax abortion laws, the central government does not appear to be on board. The government told<\/a> the court that the right to reproductive autonomy does not trump the state’s interest in protecting the right to life of human beings in the womb.<\/p>\n
