But Anuradha Koirala has dedicated her life to stopping the horrific trade of women and girls, and to aid the victims of sex trafficking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koirala felt called to serve others, but when she saw women begging on the streets who were the victims of violence, she knew she wanted to help them. Koirala had experienced extreme domestic violence herself. &#8220;Every day, there was battering. And then I had three miscarriages that I think [were] from the beating. It was very difficult because I didn&#8217;t know in those days where to go and report [it], who to&#8230;talk to,\u201d she said with an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/LIVING\/04\/29\/cnnheroes.koirala.nepal\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2010. Koirala founded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maitinepal.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maiti Nepal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Maiti roughly translates to \u201cMother\u2019s House\u201d), which has served this needy population for 26 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-victims-sex-trafficking\/\">How can the pro-life community help victims of sex trafficking?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maiti Nepal frequently works with local law enforcement to conduct raids on brothels at the porous border between India and Nepal. Sirta was rescued by Maiti Nepal and now helps to spot and rescue other girls at the border. She can spot the girls who have been seduced by men who want to sell them across the border. \u201cThe same thing happened to me,\u201d says Sirta to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2019\/feb\/08\/the-girl-sold-at-11-helps-police-save-nepal-trafficking-victims\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMy boyfriend sold one of my kidneys and then he sold me. I am only alive today because I was rescued.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l7VrOacJ4II\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many girls are trafficked over the border by unsuspecting family members. Maiti Nepal saved a young girl, Geeta, who had been trafficked since she was nine years old. The organization saved her from a brothel when she was 14. &#8220;Families are tricked all the time,&#8221; said Koirala,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/LIVING\/04\/29\/cnnheroes.koirala.nepal\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to CNN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;The trafficking of the girls is done by people who are basically known to the girls, who can lure them from the village by telling them they are getting a nice job.\u201d And because the areas are so poor and literacy rates are so low, she told another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/en\/content\/nepals-mother-teresa-has-rescued-over-18000-girls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">news outlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cIf a relative or friend turns up offering someone a job, it is often the girls\u2019 parents themselves who encourage them to go, without realizing what is really happening. Abortion is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/heres-what-happens-sex-trafficking-victims-taken-planned-parenthood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used by traffickers to control victims and keep them available to be sold. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Maiti Nepal\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maitinepal.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, almost 40,000 girls have been prevented from being sold through their efforts at the border. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As pro-life activist and human trafficking awareness educator Cindy Collins has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-victims-sex-trafficking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pointed out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, trafficking victims often suffer from not only stigma but also threats of violence. \u201cThe pro-life movement has to get involved. We have to understand and change our mindsets, and see the victims who potentially are being forced to submit to abortion through new eyes,&#8221; Collins noted. &#8220;They\u2019re being told if they don\u2019t have that abortion their pimps will kill them. He threatens to kill their family or children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite all the good work that has been done to date, there are so many more in need. But Koirala has hope. \u201cI want a society free of human trafficking.
