A New York Times <\/span>article<\/span><\/a> published last week has come under fire for using a phrase to obscure the reality of a preborn baby\u2019s heartbeat. The Daily Wire <\/span>reports<\/span><\/a> that \u201cthe pulsing of what becomes the fetus\u2019s heart\u201d was the awkward verbal workaround used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reporting in question covered John Bel Edwards\u2019 <\/span>recent victory<\/span><\/a> in Louisiana. The Times reporters use the dehumanizing language to refer to Governor Edwards\u2019 pro-life record: \u201cThroughout the campaign, Mr. Edwards, a rare Democrat holding statewide office in the South, shined a spotlight on his conservative bona fides, like his support for a state law barring abortion after the <\/span>pulsing of what becomes the fetus\u2019s heart<\/i><\/b> can be detected\u201d (emphasis added).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reporters are referring to Governor Edwards\u2019 <\/span>signing<\/span><\/a> of Louisiana\u2019s pro-life \u201c<\/span>heartbeat bill<\/span><\/a>\u201d into law in May 2019. Under Louisiana\u2019s heartbeat law, which sets out to prevent abortions \u201cwhen a fetal heartbeat has been detected,\u201d an abortionist must perform an ultrasound to check for the existence of a heartbeat. An abortionist\u2019s failure to comply could result in up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000, while the woman would not face any charges.<\/span><\/p>\n
