{"id":214209,"date":"2019-11-22T18:22:27","date_gmt":"2019-11-23T00:22:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=214209"},"modified":"2019-11-22T17:26:18","modified_gmt":"2019-11-22T23:26:18","slug":"follow-money-pro-abortion-group-suicide-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/follow-money-pro-abortion-group-suicide-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Follow the money: Pro-abortion group funded study claiming abortion doesn&#8217;t increase suicide risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2215036619304006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> which seeks to discredit the notion that\u00a0abortion increases a woman&#8217;s risk of suicide was funded in part by an organization deeply tied to the abortion industry.<\/p>\n<p>The study, entitled, &#8220;The association between first abortion and first-time non-fatal suicide attempt: a longitudinal cohort study of Danish population registries,&#8221;\u00a0was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpsy\/article\/PIIS2215-0366(19)30400-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in November by Lancet Psychiatry. The study was funded in part by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and The Lundbeck Foundation Initiative for Integrative Psychiatric Research, as well as the pro-abortion Society of Family Planning (SFP), known to collaborate and fund research on abortion. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(15)30069-X\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2011<\/a>, the Board created the SFP Research Fund as the organization that focuses solely on grant making. The University of California has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/benefits-abortion-pills-college-campuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a> in large part by the pro-abortion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-funded-abortion-pill-investor-buffett-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buffett Foundation<\/a>\u00a0(as in Warren Buffett), which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/institutional-research-academic-planning\/_files\/non-profit-research-funding.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gave<\/a>\u00a0$78 million to the University. According to the New York Times, Buffett is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/18\/magazine\/18abortion-t.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">primary financier<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/paying-millions-abortion-training-taxpayers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bixby Center\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Ryan Residency Program at UCSF, which trains abortionists. In 2016, ProPublica\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/supreme-court-abortion-decision-more-than-decade-privately-funded-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cBuffett\u2019s main academic partner (receiving at least $88 million from 2001 to 2014) has been the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/daniel-grossman-md-facog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of California, San Francisco<\/a>\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 2018 report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2018\/3\/14\/society-of-family-planning-grants-medication-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by Inside Philanthropy revealed Buffett is also funding SFP:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>[P]ublicly available\u00a0<a id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1574373343571_1518\" href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/275176910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tax documents<\/a>\u00a0show that in 2014 and 2015, the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation was SFP\u2019s main backer. The foundation provided $3.7 million of the nonprofit\u2019s $4.1 million in revenue in 2014, and $6.3 million out of $6.4 million total revenue in 2015. New, PhD<\/a>., told Live Action News that the Lancet Psychiatry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpsy\/article\/PIIS2215-0366(19)30400-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0fell short in several ways.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Lancet Psychiatry\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpsy\/article\/PIIS2215-0366(19)30400-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only analyzes women over 18.<\/li>\n<li>Did not analyze multiple suicide attempts (it only considers the first).<\/li>\n<li>Did not analyze how multiple abortions might have impacted suicide attempts.<\/li>\n<li>Only looks at first trimester abortions &#8212; it does not analyze how late term abortions would impact suicide attempts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, Dr. New points out that the study &#8220;actually does find evidence that suicide attempts increase in the first month after the abortion takes place. This is true for the group of women who had previous psychiatric contact and women who\u00a0did not have previous psychiatric contact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. New\u00a0told Live Action News that there is good research to show that abortion increases the risk of suicide.\u00a0 He pointed to several studies on the topic but said a more recent study from 2019 published in the Journal Archives of Women\u2019s Mental Health,\u00a0which analyzed data between 2006 and 2012, found that (according to New) &#8220;Italian women who obtained abortions were more likely to commit suicide than women who carried pregnancies to term.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. New said he plans to write a more in depth analysis of the study in coming days.
