Argentina President-Elect Alberto Fern\u00e1ndez, who takes office on December 10th, has vowed to push for a bill to legalize abortion as one of his first official acts.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>The Guardian<\/span><\/a>, Fern\u00e1ndez declared in a November 17th interview with <\/span>Pagina 12<\/span><\/a> that he intends to push for legalization of abortion: \u201cI am an activist for putting an end to the criminalisation of abortion. \u2026 There\u2019s going to be a bill of law sent by the president.\u201d When asked when he would submit the legislation to Congress, Fernandez replied, \u201cAs soon as we arrive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The initiative would mark a major reversal from 2018, when pro-lifers resisted immense pressure from abortion activists and <\/span>international pro-abortion groups<\/span><\/a> to legalize abortion. Although the proposed measure to decriminalize abortion passed the Argentina\u2019s lower chamber, the Argentine Senate rejected the measure by a vote of 38-31. Pro-lifers <\/span>cited<\/span><\/a> Argentina\u2019s energetic and innovative pro-life movement as a main contributor to the victory. Yet despite the pro-life victory in 2018, the South American nation has <\/span>remained in the crosshairs<\/span><\/a> of influential international abortion activists.<\/span><\/p>\n

As reported by <\/span>Buenos Aires Times<\/span><\/a>, Fern\u00e1ndez justified his view on abortion legalization with an appeal to the <\/span>debunked bodily autonomy argument<\/span><\/a>: \u201cWe should respect the woman who feels she has the right to make decisions, like abortion, about her own body as much as we do the woman who feels God doesn\u2019t permit her to have an abortion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
