{"id":214048,"date":"2019-11-18T17:04:48","date_gmt":"2019-11-18T23:04:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=214048"},"modified":"2019-11-18T13:46:33","modified_gmt":"2019-11-18T19:46:33","slug":"christian-college-pro-life-display","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/christian-college-pro-life-display\/","title":{"rendered":"Christian college refuses to allow pro-life memorial display"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Christian university in Montana is refusing to allow pro-life displays on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Emily Krokot, treasurer and secretary for Young Americans for Freedom at Rocky Mountain College, asked for permission to put crosses in the ground to memorialize abortion victims, a common memorial and similar &#8212; Krokot notes &#8212; to a display the college puts up to remember 9\/11 victims, the College denied her request.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dean of Students Brad Nason informed her that her display would have \u201ceffectively eliminated every student\u2019s ability to choose to engage or not engage with that issue\u201d if students happened to catch sight of the display. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/christian-college-bans-pro-life-display-because-people-might-think-its-pro-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College Fix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nason was also concerned that it might imply the &#8220;direct or tacit endorsement of that particular issue by the College.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Frlaakso2%2Fposts%2F2438208452964763&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"690\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nason suggested that instead of the display, the college would instead allow student groups to engage in \u201calternative programming, dialog, lecturers, etc\u201d on the topic of abortion. When Krokot asked what the difference between verbally discussing pro-life issues and a display was, Nason responded that &#8220;the pro-life\/pro-choice debate is incredibly divisive&#8221; and that &#8220;a public display is confrontational.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This serious breach of free speech on a Christian campus drew the attention of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), which launched a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/fire-tells-rocky-mountain-college-to-rescind-ban-on-divisive-displays-including-crosses\/#widget\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pressure campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the school. FIRE stated that RMC\u2019s rejection of the cross display, as well as the administration\u2019s subsequent rejection of an \u201cUnborn lives matter\u201d poster as \u201ctoo divisive,\u201d cannot be reconciled with the free expression the college promises its students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-presence-school-campus\/\">Five ways to be a pro-life presence on your school campus<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A letter sent from FIRE to the organization read in part, \u201cAssuming that RMC does intend to protect the free expression of its students\u2014as it promises\u2014it must recognize that the proposed cross display falls squarely within that protection. Even if others were to find the display offensive or divisive, this possibility is not a basis on which an institution committed to freedom of expression may rely to justify suppression of speech.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nason claims that RMS &#8211; a <em>Christian<\/em> school- might be accused of supporting pro-life causes if students set up a pro-life display, but Adam Goldstein of the Individual Rights Defense Program responded to this in a phone interview with The College Fix. \u201cI think the idea that people can\u2019t separate out actions of college students from actions of a college is naive,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think we all know that college students engage in activism and no one is confused that institutions are enthusiastic necessarily about every protester who shows up on campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Christian university in Montana is refusing to allow pro-life displays on campus.
