{"id":213450,"date":"2019-11-03T16:41:23","date_gmt":"2019-11-03T22:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=213450"},"modified":"2019-11-02T18:41:51","modified_gmt":"2019-11-02T23:41:51","slug":"pregnancy-help-orgs-mislabeled-yelp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnancy-help-orgs-mislabeled-yelp\/","title":{"rendered":"Pregnancy help orgs cry foul over being mislabeled in Yelp listing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/pregnancy-help-orgs-cry-foul-over-being-mislabeling-in-yelp-listing\">Pregnancy Help News<\/a>)\u00a0An association of California pregnancy centers and clinics is taking issue with a change by business directory service Yelp that withdrew the centers\u2019 ability to categorize their organization on the site and grouped them all together under a faith-based classification &#8211; whether applicable or not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks like what Yelp has done is tried to classify us as religious crisis pregnancy centers,\u201d California Alliance for Pregnancy Care (CAPC) President Josh McClure said. \u201cIt just isn\u2019t appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CAPC has written Yelp a letter requesting that the restriction of the centers\u2019 choice to categorize themselves be lifted and explaining that the \u201cFaith Based Crisis Pregnancy Centers\u201d label is inaccurate, insufficient and unnecessary.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>McClure told<em> Pregnancy Help News<\/em> the letter was needed, because Yelp does not have a published customer service protocol, leaving customers with a hurdle to face in having their issues addressed. As of press time the CAPC had not received a response from Yelp to its letter.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pregnancy Help News<\/em> inquired with Yelp about its withdrawal of the choice for California\u2019s pregnancy centers and clinics to classify themselves and Yelp\u2019s categorizing them all as \u201cFaith Based Crisis Pregnancy Centers,\u201d and did not hear back.<\/p>\n<p>A CAPC member first noticed the change in its Yelp classification, and then contacted CAPC leadership, after which it was noticed that this was much more widespread among the Alliance\u2019s membership.<\/p>\n<p>Yelp did respond to one CAPC member concerning the categorization of its center after the center director took notable issue with the change in the comment section of the edit feature of the Yelp business page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m appalled that you&#8217;ve changed our business to a &#8216;Faith Based Pregnancy Crisis Center,&#8217;\u201d Cary Wilcox, executive director of Sierra Pregnancy + Health wrote. \u201cI&#8217;m formally requesting that you remove this back to a medical clinic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a CA State licensed medical clinic that offers patient first care by providing pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, along with resources in the community,\u201d Wilcox told Yelp, including the CAPC letter. \u201cPlease see attached letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-workers-industry-pregnancy-centers-competition\/\">Former abortion workers speak: The abortion industry sees pregnancy centers as competition<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wilcox heard back from Ian MacBean, Yelp&#8217;s Director of User Operations and Ombudsman. MacBean said there had never been a medical clinic designation and offered to add the medical center category back to Sierra\u2019s page but declined the request to remove the \u201cfaith-based\u201d designation because Sierra identifies itself as such on its website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will moderate additional category suggestions as we do with all suggested edits to business information,\u201d MacBean said, \u201cbut do not intend to remove this categorization from the page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilcox explained that the center provides care because of being faith-based, however adherence to any faith is not a prerequisite to receiving care. She examined as well that \u201ccrisis pregnancy center\u201d is a 40-year-old outdated term, and that there is a difference between centers that classify as medical clinics and those that are resource centers.<\/p>\n<p>At some point Wilcox later noticed she could update her category again, but then saw later it had been switched back. She noticed as well that other centers did not have correct designations.<\/p>\n<p>She told <em>Pregnancy Help News<\/em> will be checking the category daily going forward.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While Yelp responded to our request, it appears that Yelp needs to consider re-evaluating the term &#8220;Crisis Pregnancy Center,&#8221; as it is quite dated and not fitting to those seeking care,\u201d Wilcox said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen pregnancy centers were initially launched, they were resource centers bent on preventing abortions to women facing unplanned pregnancy,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cNearly 40 years later, we have redefined them as &#8220;Pregnancy Care Clinics&#8221; (medical) or &#8220;Pregnancy Resource Centers&#8221; (non-medical).\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bHe8YGPGzj4\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur medical clinic offers RN and OBGYN pregnancy testing and verifications and early ultrasound for pregnancy verifications,\u201d added Wilcox. \u201cWe serve women facing not only unplanned pregnancy but also those who face uninsured and unsupported pregnancy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The discussion with MacBean did not include explanation as to why any pregnancy center had its category changed in the first place, why they had the ability to classify themselves removed or why Yelp insisted on any pregnancy centers designate themselves as faith-based, whether applicable or not, or whether they desired it or not.<\/p>\n<p>Heartbeat International President Jor-El Godsey noted the conflict between Yelp\u2019s treatment of California pregnancy centers and clinics and its published guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yelp&#8217;s obvious bias against pregnancy help centers violates its very own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/guidelines\">guidelines<\/a> to &#8216;be unbiased and objective,'&#8221; Godsey said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The key to Yelp is the public trust that its platform allows fair reviews,\u201d he said. \u201cTilting the platform against PHCs is tilting it in favor of Big Abortion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yelp policy demands reviewers &#8220;play nice,&#8221; he added. \u201cYet Yelp is only playing nice for Big Abortion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McClure stressed how pregnancy help centers must push back against efforts to misrepresent them in the public sphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis kind of stuff has been going on for long time,\u201d McClure told <em>Pregnancy Help News<\/em>. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to start raising our voice and calling it out, because our reputation does matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere each of the 173 locations across California had an opportunity before to choose the category they should fall under,\u201d the CAPC letter states, \u201cnow their choice has been restricted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organizations are diverse, the letter explains, with 87 of the 173 operating under the license of a physician, and a growing number pursuing medical clinic accreditation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of these organizations are not faith based at all,\u201d it states, \u201cbut are part of a growing secular movement that is concerned about reproductive justice. There is also diversity in services offered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese organizations assist anyone that is pregnant,\u201d it continued, \u201chave already delivered their baby, or people who are seeking resources such as housing, food assistance, court mandated education, and even completing a GED!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why our movement abandoned the &#8220;Crisis Pregnancy Center&#8221; term in the 90&#8217;s (30 years ago),\u201d the CAPC told Yelp. \u201cIt just doesn&#8217;t represent what we do!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McClure pointed out that Yelp delineates whose content belongs to whom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything we generate is ours, anything they generate is theirs,\u201d he said. \u201cAn individual user can close their profile and take their content with them. A business, on the other hand, cannot delete their profile, and the content is Yelp\u2019s\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McClure said this action by Yelp probably has something to do with instances where a business is getting bad Yelp reviews, so they can\u2019t close their profile and all the bad reviews go away, leaving the Yelper to lose out on that information and wander into a bad experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what if Yelp itself is generating the content that the business wants to get away from?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal here is for it to stop,\u201d McClure told <em>Pregnancy Help News<\/em>. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t have to be defined by people who don\u2019t have our best interest at heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a about pregnancy<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CAPC is intended to be representative of the pregnancy help movement, he explained, specifically a voice for the state\u2019s 173 organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The Alliance was formed out of the high-profile NIFLA (National Institute of Family and Life Advocates) case, where the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/california-discriminated-against-pro-life-pregnancy-centers-says-trump-admin\">struck down<\/a> a 2015 California law compelling pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise for abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The centers and clinics needed a stronger voice, said McClure, and to get organized for the next \u201cReproductive FACT Act,\u201d and better contend with issues where advocacy is needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t afford to not get involved,\u201d said McClure. \u201cWe\u2019re being targeted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia\u2019s public-school system also has curriculum that speaks negatively about the pregnancy center movement,\u201d McClure said. \u201cWe\u2019ll be looking at that as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one of the things that we know we can address for our members,\u201d said McClure, also the director of a pregnancy care clinic.<\/p>\n<p>CAPC\u2019s plan is to first request a cease and desist on any misclassification and negative portrayal, and if this is not successful, the CAPC will then ask a little more firmly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have contacted legal counsel on this,\u201d said McClure, \u201cand we are reviewing our user agreement with Yelp and our legal options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cOur goal is to stop this and protect our reputation, and who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note: This article was
