Jeff Smisek, United Airlines CEO; Abortion funder<\/p><\/div>\n

On Thursday, Chief Research Strategist for Live Action Abby Johnson wrote about an e-mail<\/a> she received from her old employer, Planned Parenthood of the Gulf Coast<\/a> (PPGC). Sent out to “supporters,” the e-mail update contained an invitation to this Planned Parenthood affiliate’s biggest bash of the year: their\u00a0“Leading the Way Gala<\/a>.” With a black tie and a check for $500 made out to Planned Parenthood of the Gulf Coast, guests will be treated to a night of tired, emotive rhetoric culminating in a plea for the gala’s elite attendees to pull out their wallets. And it will work. PPGC’s\u00a02009 gala raised nearly $500,000<\/a>\u00a0in just one night.<\/p>\n

The gala is set to be held on Oct. 6, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Downtown. Honorees for the event will be Nancy and George Peterkin, Jr. The elderly pair are longtime donors to the affiliate, with\u00a0Nancy having served on the board<\/a> for PPGC. The Richard Brown Orchestra is scheduled to provide entertainment for the evening.<\/p>\n

But what got Abby’s attention was two of the individuals chairing the gala,\u00a0Diana Strassman and her husband Jeff Smisek.<\/p>\n

Diana Strassman<\/strong> is a professor of feminist economics (huh?) at Rice University in Houston. Specifically, she\u00a0is a distinguished professor in the practice of humanities in Rice University\u2019s Center for (surprise, surprise) Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; a faculty affiliate in Rice\u2019s Asian Studies program; and director of Rice\u2019s Program on Poverty, Social Justice, and Human Capabilities.\u00a0In 1994 she established Feminist Economics<\/em>, a journal which\u00a0promotes dialogue about feminist economic perspectives and publishes research aimed at improving the lives of children, women, and men around the world. Although only those who have been born, it would seem.<\/p>\n

Jeff Smisek<\/strong> is the president and CEO of\u00a0United Continental Holdings, the parent company of\u00a0United Airlines,\u00a0the world’s largest airline in terms of number of destinations. Smisek also serves on the board for UA’s parent company. Joining\u00a0Continental Airlines in 1995 as senior vice president, Smisek oversaw Continental’s merger with United Airlines in 2010, resulting in his taking the helm as CEO of the new company.\u00a0Basically, he runs the show.<\/p>\n

You may be asking yourself how such a distinguished couple found themselves co-chairing a fundraiser for America’s biggest abortion business. Perhaps they agreed to do this as a one-off favor. Or perhaps not.<\/p>\n

Jeff Smisek and his wife have a long history of support for the nation’s most profitable abortion business.\u00a0Between Sept. 1, 2000 and Aug. 31, 2001, the couple gave between $5,000 and $9,999 to the affiliate.\u00a0Between\u00a0August 11 and November 28, 2001, they\u00a0made a donation<\/a> of between $1,000 and $4,999 to\u00a0Planned Parenthood of the Gulf Coast. And in 2007 the couple donned their fancy duds and attended PPGC’s annual gala<\/a>. That year the gala pulled in\u00a0$340,000. Then, in 2008, the couple splashed out with a contribution of between\u00a0$10,000 and $24,999<\/a> to the International Planned Parenthood Federation, of which the Planned Parenthood Federation of America is an affiliate.<\/p>\n

Smisek and his wife not only give generously to PPGC, but they also appear to be pals with the Planned Parenthood of the Gulf Coast’s\u00a0CEO. Voices Breaking Boundaries is a “progressive” non-profit which seeks to\u00a0incite social justice – including “women’s rights” – through art. Listed<\/a> among the dozen highest-level donors to the organization are Peter Durkin, CEO of\u00a0Planned Parenthood of the Gulf Coast, alongside Smisek and his wife. The Katy Prairie Conservancy is another, admittedly more innocuous organization which enjoys donations<\/a> from Durkin and Smisek.<\/p>\n

This story is the tip of the iceberg. The abortion industry is kept afloat through the misplaced generosity of men and women such as Jeff Smisek and\u00a0Diana Strassman. The abortion industry is nothing without the abortion lobby to protect it from justice.\u00a0A large number of the abortion lobby’s top donors would be less than excited to have their affiliation with the abortion lobby made public. Which is exactly why we need to make such affiliations public. Exerting public pressure on these individuals by way of bringing to light their ties with the abortion lobby will cause many to strongly reconsider their priorities in charitable giving. Just a few million dollars less in the pocket of the abortion lobby will result in fewer of their puppets being put into places of power – which in turn will reduce the amount of time between now and the day that abortion is abolished.<\/p>\n
