President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), Archbishop Richard Gagnon, spoke to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/grandinmedia.ca\/palliative-care-funding-becomes-more-urgent-as-courts-chip-away-at-assisted-suicide-safeguards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grandin Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the issue. \u201cYou can assist a person in their last days of life to die with dignity in a supportive way that respects the importance of life (with palliative care),\u201d he said. \u201cThe very notion of euthanasia is contrary to that.\u201d Gagnon also stated that the government has not given a lot of support for such care, and there is &#8220;a great need in Canada for more palliative care, be that of a religious nature or not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several pro-life Catholic organizations &#8212; including the CCCB, Catholic Health Alliance of Canada, and the Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute &#8212; have urged the government to respect the spiritual dimension of palliative care. The CCCB statement also \u201cstrongly emphasized that palliative care is not to include euthanasia or assisted suicide, or what is being called in Canada \u2018Medical Assistance in Dying\u2019 (MAid).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/euthanasia-organization-elderly-bad-death-assisted-suicide\/\">Euthanasia organization tells elderly they\u2019ll have a \u2018bad death\u2019 without assisted suicide<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The court\u2019s elimination of restrictions on assisted suicide, which required patients to have a terminal diagnosis with a \u201creasonably foreseeable\u201d death, could result in an increased victimization of vulnerable people, including those suffering from disabilities, severe depression, psychiatric conditions, and other non-terminal conditions.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this, palliative care must be a real option that gives vulnerable Canadians an obtainable alternative to assisted suicide, which some may feel is their only end-of-life option. The bishops have sought to emphasize the importance of such care, and at the parish level have begun to\u00a0 develop tools to spread easy-to-understand information about what constitutes palliative care. They hope to take these initiatives to schools and health care institutions as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Canada,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/every-three-hours-canada-euthanized\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over one percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all deaths result from assisted suicide. As the National Review<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/canada-medical-doctors-kill-thousands-in-2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pointed out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThis means well over 3,000 people are killed by their doctors each year in Canada, which \u2014 if my math is correct \u2014 is more than 250 a month, more than 58 a week, and more than eight per day. Heck, that\u2019s about one every three hours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assisted suicide restrictions have long been viewed as \u201creasonable\u201d even by proponents of euthanasia legislation. Yet as seen in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/learned-two-decades-euthanasia-netherlands\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the example of The Netherlands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the legalization of assisted suicide seems inevitably to lead to a slippery slope whereby society\u2019s most vulnerable end up as victims. What little protections that originally existed in the assisted suicide law are chipped away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This urgency is not lost on the Canadian bishops. \u201cWe have done a lot on this issue,\u201d said Archbishop Smith of Edmonton. \u201cWe want this to encourage [people and institutions] in the advocacy of palliative care,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CCCB hopes to have information \u201ckits\u201d on palliative care available by 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian Catholic bishops and pro-life organizations are sounding the alarm over shrinking federal support for end-of-life palliative care after a Quebec court struck down federal restrictions on assisted suicide in September.
