The piece, called \u201cI Had a Late-Term Abortion. I Am Not a Monster\u201d Lyndsay Werking-Yip, is profoundly misguided and tragic, but also emblematic of an attitude all too prevalent in our culture today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Werking-Yip\u2019s decision to procure a late-term abortion started when, around 20 weeks\u2019 gestation, doctors determined her baby had \u201csevere brain abnormalities.\u201d According to the Werking-Yip, \u201cThere was a small empty space where brain matter should have developed in our child\u2019s frontal lobe. She also had agenesis of the corpus callosum, which meant that the middle structure joining left and right hemispheres hadn\u2019t grown properly. And there was a third abnormality, a \u2018rough\u2019 area of gray matter.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The author\u2019s choice to end her baby\u2019s life through abortion reflects society&#8217;s common view that children whose future includes uncertain suffering or developmental disabilities are \u201cbetter off\u201d aborted. A CNN anchor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cnn-host-babies-disabilities-born\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently insisted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that preborn babies with serious developmental challenges do not have a right to live: \u201cWhy would you want a family to have to have a child with a severe disability? &#8230; That child will have so many problems and will most likely not live past their first birthday. Why would lawmakers force parents to bring that child to fruition?\u201d Even in once staunchly pro-life Ireland, abortion advocates are now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/irish-push-late-term-abortion-disabilities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pushing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for legalization of late-term abortion for preborn babies with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lila-rose-hill-aborting-disabilities-corrupts-equality\/\">Lila Rose at The Hill: Aborting children for disabilities \u2018corrupts the fundamental principle of equality\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Werking-Yip\u2019s doctors did not know how the abnormalities would affect the baby, only that she would likely face developmental delays, seizures, and other problems, but not a never-before-seen medical condition.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 23 weeks, Werking-Yip decided to procure an abortion, telling herself what many parents do &#8212; that abortion is the &#8220;compassionate&#8221; decision: \u201cMy husband and I chose to end our child\u2019s life. \u2026 Our child would not be given a life of pain and suffering. Instead, we would take her pain on as our own.\u201d But tragically,\u00a0although she wanted to spare her baby pain and suffering, she actually didn\u2019t. At 23 weeks of age, her baby was not only viable, but almost certainly capable of feeling pain, as a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorsonfetalpain.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large body of research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown. Instead of being granted the comfort of her mother\u2019s embrace, the baby\u2019s life was violently taken.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The author is far from the only person to have a prenatal diagnosis filled with uncertainty and challenges. When doctors realized <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/proof-positive-life-with-a-disability-is-life-worth-living\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chase Briton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had severe brain abnormalities, his prognosis was highly uncertain. Yet just years later, he was walking, talking, riding a bike, using scissors &#8212; leaving doctors dumbfounded. As Briton\u2019s mother said, \u201cDon\u2019t give up on your kids.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mindset that preborn babies with disabilities must be aborted is based on a misguided sense of compassion rooted in despair. In a society that values the advancement of treatments for those suffering difficult conditions, medical developments continue to bring new hope to those suffering from serious conditions. Unfortunately, it seems that children in the womb are rarely afforded this new hope granted to those outside the womb. But some are working to change that. Just this month, a revolutionary new treatment for cystic fibrosis called Trikafta received FDA approval. The FDA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-new-breakthrough-therapy-cystic-fibrosis\">press release<\/a> called it a &#8220;breakthrough therapy.&#8221; Dr. Mike Boyle, senior vice president at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, called the new medication \u201ctransformative medication which is going to significantly improve outcomes for people with cystic fibrosis,\u201d according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2019\/10\/23\/we-conquered-a-disease-how-vertex-delivered-a-transformative-medicine-for-cystic-fibrosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tragedy, as Lila Rose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lila-rose-hill-aborting-disabilities-corrupts-equality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pointed out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is that many children are never given a chance. \u201cUnfortunately, these diagnostic, life-saving advances are not always matched by caring and informed advice. Sometimes doctors and society recommend that babies with disabilities pay the ultimate price of abortion for their conditions,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=https-3A__www.washingtonpost.com_opinions_i-2Dwouldve-2Daborted-2Da-2Dfetus-2Dwith-2Ddown-2Dsyndrome-2Dwomen-2Dneed-2Dthat-2Dright_2018_03_09_3aaac364-2D23d6-2D11e8-2D94da-2Debf9d112159c-5Fstory.html-3Futm-5Fterm-3D.d31709d6bc47&amp;d=DwMGaQ&amp;c=U0G0XJAMhEk_X0GAGzCL7Q&amp;r=z6r3Gw5oWXNgl7K0GqQegZ9ggVHgj6cjJzuZDCO08ZQ&amp;m=tOl-m7kJKOS2NijvHvsGbpDYBhnBFHpNefgtc9N2Gjw&amp;s=B8v_uW-GLU5TfHigWUm4AwYqAoRxjp--6jaoW6xk7pk&amp;e=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prominent people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in society even believe preborn babies with non-life threatening conditions like Down syndrome should be aborted. In Iceland, virtually every preborn child diagnosed with Down syndrome is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/iceland-isnt-eradicating-down-syndrome-it-is-killing-every-person-who-has-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aborted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in several other countries abortion rates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/down-syndrome-humans-endangered-list\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exceed 90%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for babies identified as having the chromosomal condition. Yet as mothers who chose life for their babies with Down syndrome\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/like-raise-child-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have attested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these children are a beautiful gift to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-violent-photos-real-abortionist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violence of abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must never be a solution. We must bear one another\u2019s burdens and seek ways to ease them, not kill those who may suffer. As Karen Gaffney, President of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.karengaffneyfoundation.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karen Gaffney Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prolifereplies.liveaction.org\/disabilities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cEnding the life of an unborn child because he or she will have a disability is wrong, it is very, very wrong. \u2026 This view is unjust, tragic, and deserving of international outrage. It has no place in a world that stands for basic human rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d6GewCpuC30\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one level, Werking-Yip\u2019s grief is palpable, as she speaks of herself harshly and with latent guilt, as the speaks of the baby that she misses every day, and her first thought in the morning and last thought before going to bed. Her baby\u2019s suffering was not lost on her, and she mourns her loss daily.
