According to the data,\u00a0between 2000 and 2017, a total of\u00a020,057,120 abortions have been reported to the Guttmacher Institute &#8212; and interestingly, over one quarter (26%) of those procedures (5,281,838) were committed by taxpayer-funded Planned Parenthood. But even as national abortion numbers drop, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s market share of abortions is climbing. In recent years, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-abortion-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood<\/a> has been gaining a growing share of abortions, and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-almost-40-percent-us-abortions\/\">currently commits<\/a> nearly 40% of the nation&#8217;s abortions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_212661\" style=\"width: 423px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212661\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212661\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-and-Planned-Parenthood-totals-and-MktShare-2000-to-2017.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion and Planned Parenthood totals and MktShare 2000 to 2017 (Image: Live Action News) \" width=\"413\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-and-Planned-Parenthood-totals-and-MktShare-2000-to-2017.jpg 413w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-and-Planned-Parenthood-totals-and-MktShare-2000-to-2017-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-212661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion and Planned Parenthood totals and MktShare 2000 to 2017 (Image: Live Action News)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 2014, Guttmacher reported a total of\u00a0926,190 abortions in the U.S. &#8212; and\u00a0although Guttmacher did not publish abortion totals for 2016, its 2017\u00a0<em>Abortion Incidence and Service Availability\u00a0<\/em>report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/abortion-incidence-service-availability-us-2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>\u00a0864,080 abortions were committed in 2016 and 862,320 abortions in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/factsheet\/fb_induced_abortion.pdf\">2017<\/a>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/us-abortion-rate-lowest-roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> reported by\u00a0Live Action News. To gather information, Guttmacher allegedly sent surveys or made calls to &#8220;2,277 facilities in our universe of potential abortion-providing facilities as well as state health departments&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood&#8217;s former\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-independent-is-guttmacher-from-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special affiliate<\/a>\u201d reports receiving &#8220;questionnaires from 954 entities (42%) and acquired data during telephone and e-mail follow-up from an additional 386 entities (17%).&#8221; It also &#8220;used health department data to determine the abortion caseloads of 423 facilities (19%).&#8221; Then, for another 446 facilities (20%), the Guttmacher report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/abortion-incidence-service-availability-us-2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a> that it &#8220;estimated abortion totals using a variety of techniques and information sources.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017 State Abortion Data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the <em>12 states<\/em> Guttmacher viewed as &#8220;supportive of abortion rights in 2017&#8230; accounted for 43% of all U.S. abortions in that year.&#8221; Those states were &#8220;California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The number of abortions from those states plus several additional states with high reported abortion numbers for 2017 are listed below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>California: 132,680<\/li>\n<li>Connecticut: 11,910<\/li>\n<li>Florida: 71,050<\/li>\n<li>Georgia: 36,330<\/li>\n<li>Hawaii: 3,200<\/li>\n<li>Illinois: 42, 080<\/li>\n<li>Maine: 2,040<\/li>\n<li>Maryland: 29,800<\/li>\n<li>Michigan: 26,630<\/li>\n<li>Montana: 1,580<\/li>\n<li>New Jersey: 48, 110<\/li>\n<li>New Mexico: 4,620<\/li>\n<li>New York 105,380<\/li>\n<li>North Carolina: 29,500<\/li>\n<li>Ohio: 20,630<\/li>\n<li>Oregon: 9,640<\/li>\n<li>Pennsylvania: 31, 260<\/li>\n<li>Texas: 55,440<\/li>\n<li>Vermont: 1.300<\/li>\n<li>Washington: 17,740<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2017, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/article_files\/gpr2204119.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guttmacher<\/a>, the overall\u00a0<em><strong>abortion rate<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(the number of abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344) fell by 20%, from 16.9 in 2011 to 13.5 in 2017. &#8220;During that timeframe, <strong>32 states enacted a total of 394 new restrictions<\/strong>, with the vast majority of these measures having taken effect (that is, they were not struck down by a court),&#8221; Guttmacher\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/article_files\/gpr2204119.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0(emphasis added).<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/abortion-incidence-service-availability-us-2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The largest declines in abortion <em>rates<\/em> occurred in Delaware, Arkansas, West Virginia, Alabama and Virginia; but largest increases in Mississippi, New Jersey, Minnesota, Georgia, Maryland and Wisconsin.<\/li>\n<li>Areas with the highest abortion <em>rates<\/em> in 2017 were the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Florida. Rates were lowest in Wyoming, South Dakota, Kentucky, Idaho and Missouri.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Abortion rates declined in nearly all states between 2011 and 2017, regardless of whether the state enacted new abortion restrictions,&#8221; Guttmacher also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/article_files\/gpr2204119.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abortion Providers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Guttmacher Institute reported that between 2014 and 2017, there was a <strong>five percent decline<\/strong> in &#8220;health care facilities&#8221; known to have provided abortions, but a<strong> two percent increase<\/strong> in the number of\u00a0&#8220;abortion-providing clinics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Guttmacher found 1,587 abortion-providing facilities, reporting this was a decline of five percent from 1,671 in 2014.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>253 <strong>Specialized abortion clinics<\/strong>:\u00a0(<em>nonhospital facilities in which half or more of patient visits were for abortion services, regardless of annual abortion caseload<\/em>), a\u00a07% decline from 272 in 2014.\u00a0 Providing\u00a060% of all abortions.<\/li>\n<li>555 <strong>Nonspecialized clinics<\/strong>: (<em>nonhospital facilities in which fewer than half of patient visits were for abortion services<\/em>), a 7%\u00a0 increase from 517 in 2014.\u00a0Providing\u00a035% of all abortions.<\/li>\n<li>518 <strong>Hospitals<\/strong>: (<em>traditional hospital-based sites of care<\/em>), a\u00a0decline of 19% from 638 in 2014.<\/li>\n<li>261 <strong>Physicians\u2019 offices<\/strong>:\u00a0(<em>facilities that provided fewer than 400 abortions per year<\/em>), a 7% increase of from 244 in 2014.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_212572\" style=\"width: 724px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212572\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212572\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2017-Guttmacher-Abortion-Providers.jpg\" alt=\"Image: 2017 Guttmacher Abortion Providers (Table: Guttmacher Institute)\" width=\"714\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2017-Guttmacher-Abortion-Providers.jpg 714w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2017-Guttmacher-Abortion-Providers-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2017-Guttmacher-Abortion-Providers-700x516.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2017-Guttmacher-Abortion-Providers-500x368.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-212572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2017 Guttmacher Abortion Providers (Table: Guttmacher Institute)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Specialized and Nonspecialized Abortion Facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher officially reported <strong>808 &#8220;abortion clinics&#8221; in 2017 <\/strong>(which consist of two of the four categories listed above: Specialized and Nonspecialized Abortion Facilities), and cites a two percent increase from 2014. Despite this increase Guttmacher noted that &#8220;between 2011 and 2014, the number of clinics providing abortions had declined by 6%.&#8221; According to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/abortion-incidence-service-availability-us-2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> repor<\/a>t, of the 789 abortion clinic providers in 2014, &#8220;127 had not been providing this care in 2014,&#8221; while, they claim, &#8220;103 had stopped doing so or had closed by 2017.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>States with just <strong>one<\/strong> &#8220;abortion-providing clinic&#8221;\u00a0in 2017, as defined by Guttmacher (two of the four categories previously mentioned above), included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>North Dakota<\/li>\n<li>South Dakota<\/li>\n<li>Kentucky<\/li>\n<li>Mississippi<\/li>\n<li>West Virginia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_212638\" style=\"width: 1271px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212638\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212638\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-clinics-by-state-2017-The-Guttmacher-Institute.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion clinics by state 2017 (Tables: The Guttmacher Institute)\" width=\"1261\" height=\"815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-clinics-by-state-2017-The-Guttmacher-Institute.jpg 1261w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-clinics-by-state-2017-The-Guttmacher-Institute-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-clinics-by-state-2017-The-Guttmacher-Institute-768x496.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-clinics-by-state-2017-The-Guttmacher-Institute-700x452.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Abortion-clinics-by-state-2017-The-Guttmacher-Institute-500x323.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1261px) 100vw, 1261px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-212638\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion clinics by state 2017 (Tables: The Guttmacher Institute)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Reasons for abortion declines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Charlotte Lozier Institute Associate Scholar\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/guttmacher-report-shows-pro-life-progress-continues-as-u-s-abortion-rates-decline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Michael J. New<\/a>, &#8220;Between 2011 and 2017, the U.S. abortion rate fell by approximately 20 percent. The long-term decline is even more impressive.\u00a0Since peaking in 1980, the U.S. abortion rate has fallen by over 53 percent and is now lower than what it was in 1973 \u2014 the year of the\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade\u00a0<\/em>decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. New added:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>In their report, Guttmacher acknowledges that increased health and safety standards for abortion facilities are correlated with abortion rate declines in some states. However, they take considerable pains to argue that other pro-life policies have had little do to with the overall decline. In particular, they argue that pro-life laws, shifts in public opinion, and reductions in sexual activity have only had a marginal impact on the U.S. abortion rate. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Unsurprisingly, many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/09\/18\/science\/americas-abortion-rate-has-dropped-to-its-lowest-ever.html\">mainstream media outlets<\/a>\u00a0have uncritically parroted Guttmacher\u2019s spin. That said the main problem with Guttmacher\u2019s analysis is they only consider data between 2011 and 2017 \u2014 a relatively short period of time. When one considers the fact that the U.S. abortion rate is less than half of what it was in 1980 \u2014 it is evident that the efforts of pro-lifers are having a significant impact.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A regular, prayerful presence outside abortion facilities may also be adding to the reductions.\u00a0In 2018, Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-facilities-closing-unprecedented-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documented<\/a> how\u00a0\u201cindependent [abortion] clinics are closing at an unprecedented rate.\u201d According to a 2019 summary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortioncarenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/CNC-2018-general-one-pager.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortioncarenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/CNC-2018-general-one-pager.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abortion Care Network<\/a>, &#8220;The number of independent clinics in the U.S. has been reduced by 28% since 2012.&#8221;\u00a0 And, according to Guttmacher, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/report_pdf\/abortion-incidence-service-availability-us-2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017<\/a>, 89% of U.S. counties did not have a facility that provided abortions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guttmacher&#8217;s latest abortion report indicates that over 20 million abortions have taken place within the United States since 2000.
