Although abortion activists are most overt in their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/condoms-water-african-population-control\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ideological colonization in Africa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Latin America is also an important, if oft-overlooked, battleground in the struggle for life. A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/the_americas\/ap-explains-abortion-rights-in-mexico-and-latin-america\/2019\/09\/28\/81c42ed2-e254-11e9-be7f-4cc85017c36f_story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AP overview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the current hotspots in Latin America reminds us that abortion activists\u2019 ideological colonization efforts are alive and well in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Argentina<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Argentina has long been a strong protector of the rights of the preborn, with abortion illegal with limited exceptions since the 1880s, making it a prime target of ideological colonization in Latin America by abortion activists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, Argentina came close to legalizing abortion after abortion activists&#8217; well-organized and internationally backed campaign. As Live Action News\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/international-abortion-pressure-argentina\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, influential abortion colonizers like the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and Amnesty International were directly involved with pressuring the Argentine government into taking up the bill. Many other groups supported the effort, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2018\/06\/12\/argentina-decriminalize-abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Rights Watch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which in 2018 called Argentina\u2019s pending pro-abortion legislation a \u201clandmark opportunity to end [the] harmful policy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green scarves worn by protesters are well-recognized symbols of the pro-abortion movement in Argentina \u00a0green scarves. The origin of these scarves is deeply, painfully ironic; the inspiration was drawn from the legacy of Argentine mothers of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">desaparecidos, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or disappeared, who wore white scarves in remembrance of their children who went missing under the military dictatorship. But instead of speaking up for their missing children, the green scarf-clad abortion supporters are wearing those symbols instead <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to advocate for their right to disappear their own children<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, through the violence of abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year the effort to legalize abortion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/argentina-senate-rejects-pro-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">failed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a 38 to 31 margin in the Senate after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/5-things-pro-lifers-argentina\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widespread civic action by pro-lifers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, this has not deterred the pro-abortion groups. As PRI <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2019-06-27\/argentina-divided-over-abortion-even-feminists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, abortion activists reintroduced an abortion legalization bill on the symbolic date of May 28th, which abortion activists have termed the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.may28.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Day of Action for Women\u2019s Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The day is an initiative of the Women\u2019s Global Network for Reproductive Rights, whose members include leading &#8216;abortion colonizers&#8217; like Amnesty International, the Center for Reproductive Rights, the International Centre for Reproductive Health, the International Planned Parenthood Federation, and Pathfinder International.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/argentina-pro-life-beaten-pro-abortion\/\">Argentina pro-life activist brutally beaten by three pro-abortion attackers<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Mexico<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most of Latin America, Mexico has long afforded preborn babies legal protections, but those seeking to expand abortion \u00a0have been chipping away at its protections for decades. Planned Parenthood Global <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/about-us\/planned-parenthood-global\/where-we-work\/mexico\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that its work in Mexico is \u201cgrowing\u201d and has as its primary goal to \u201creduce abortion stigma.\u201d The predominantly Catholic country has traditionally been opposed to abortion with the exception of Mexico City, which legalized abortion in 2007. Last month, the state of Oaxaca became the first state outside the capital to legalize abortion when the state\u2019s lawmakers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-mexico-abortion\/mexicos-oaxaca-state-legalizes-abortion-in-historic-move-for-catholic-nation-idUSKBN1WA30Y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved a bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allowing abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Mexico&#8217;s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has not publicly taken a position on abortion, the fact that his party dominates Oaxaca\u2019s legislature does not bode well. In another ominous sign, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/sep\/26\/we-have-made-history-mexicos-oaxaca-state-decriminalises-abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the federal government tweeted a note of support for Oaxaca\u2019s abortion legalization: \u201cOur democracy is strengthened with the extension of rights and the recognition of the autonomy of women to make decisions over their own bodies.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood Global celebrated with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ppglobe\/status\/1177335879301513222\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rife with undertones of ideological colonization; the abortion giant claimed that Mexico is finally emerging from its so-called backwardness and now &#8220;takes a crucial step in the protection of women&#8217;s rights.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-212296\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/mexico-pp-591x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/mexico-pp-591x700.jpg 591w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/mexico-pp-253x300.jpg 253w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/mexico-pp-500x592.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/mexico-pp.jpg 639w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>El Salvador<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The small Central American republic of El Salvador has one of the most staunchly pro-life laws in the world. The country has come to the forefront in the news recently for controversies surrounding its abortion law and the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-49619151\">case of a woman<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>who was charged with inducing an abortion. International groups have been using this woman\u2019s case, as well as the country\u2019s controversial practice of prosecuting women who procure abortions in general, as a wedge and an opening to advance their ideological colonization.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the flurry of recent press coverage, abortion supporters have targeted the country for years.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013, they tried to use the case of a 22-year-old named Beatriz (who requested an abortion because she had lupus and her baby had anencephaly) as their rallying cry, and they falsely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/el-salvador-upholds-constitutional-abortion-ban\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claimed she needed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a \u201clife-saving abortion\u201d when she was offered an emergency c-section (not the same as an abortion). The Supreme Court denied her request and upheld the abortion ban in 2013. In 2016, Amnesty International <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amnesty\/status\/671311073463681024?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">railed<\/a> against El Salvador\u2019s abortion restrictions as \u201ctantamount to torture,\u201d as Live Action News\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/amnesty-international-abortion-restrictions-tantamount-to-torture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Abortion groups like IPPF have even been caught covertly funding abortion advocacy organizations in El Salvador, as the Population Research Institute has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pop.org\/planned-parenthood-caught-trying-to-pressure-el-salvador-into-legalizing-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in 2017, 21 pro-abortion Congressmen from the U.S. threw their weight behind the abortion colonizers by formally calling for El Salvador to decriminalize abortion,\u00a0as reported in a Center for Reproductive Rights <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reproductiverights.org\/press-room\/21-members-of-congress-call-on-el-salvador-to-decriminalize-abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-212297\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/amnesty-tweet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"516\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/amnesty-tweet.jpg 516w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/amnesty-tweet-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/amnesty-tweet-500x454.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 516px) 100vw, 516px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/breaking-president-trump-signs-executive-order-defunding-international-planned-parenthood\/\">losing U.S. federal funding<\/a>, the abortion colonizers have retained significant influence around the world pushing their agenda, including Latin America. As Senior Counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom International Neydy Casillas said in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/international-abortion-pressure-argentina\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year with Live Action News, Central and South America \u201chave been targets for the abortion movement\u201d for a long time. Some Latin America watchers are even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/latindispatch.com\/2019\/10\/03\/green-tide-reaches-mexico-as-oaxaca-decriminalizes-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trying to paint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recent pro-abortion developments in Latin America as part of a \u201cgreen tide,\u201d an allusion to the green scarves of Argentina\u2019s abortion activists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet pro-life laws in many Latin American countries remain deeply rooted in pro-life cultural values that draw from the traditional influence of the Catholic Church and, more recently, the growing presence of evangelical Protestant groups.
