One of the most common is about how the United States track statistics on abortion &#8212; <em>who&#8217;s<\/em> getting them, <em>how many<\/em> they&#8217;re getting, and <em>why<\/em> they&#8217;re getting them. Below is information to help answer some of those questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How abortion data is collected:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are two national groups that collect data on abortion, and there are a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-annual-abortions-understated\/\">number of differences<\/a> in the two reporting agencies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) collects information the states provide, but due to a wide variety of state requirements on abortions, CDC fails to report abortion numbers for a number of states. In <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-dropped-50-percent-1980-cdc-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-dropped-50-percent-1980-cdc-report\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1576295688368000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG51HSMMdOR2B8ZdQk5iCq89r84jw\">2016<\/a>, the CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/67\/ss\/ss6713a1.htm?s_cid=ss6713a1_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/67\/ss\/ss6713a1.htm?s_cid%3Dss6713a1_w&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1576295688368000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHia5yR5PzMT6xgoxSn2vSEwI2uVA\">reported<\/a> a total of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>623,471<\/b><\/span> total abortions, and in 2018, the CDC reported 619,591 abortions. Read our analysis <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/us-abortion-rate-lowest-roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>As of November 2020, the CDC\u2019s most current numbers for race\/ethnicity are from <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-abortions-decline-black-women-extremely-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018<\/a>, but only include 31 reporting areas.<\/li>\n<li>Planned Parenthood committed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-40-percent-abortion-110-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40 percent<\/a> of all abortions in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-more-abortion-less-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018<\/a>. But they don\u2019t break down their abortion numbers by race.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The reasons given for abortion:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not all states report abortion data, and only a few states require &#8220;reasons&#8221; to be given; therefore, this data is extremely limited.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To date, Live Action News has not\u00a0reviewed the most recent state reports on abortions for &#8220;reasons.&#8221; Our most recent analysis was conducted in 2018 and some of these numbers have since been updated. Read it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fraction-abortions-rape-incest-health\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Our friends over at the Charlotte Lozier Institute regularly analyze state reports on abortion as they are published and you can scroll through those reports by state\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/state-abortion-reporting\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Abortion data by gestation (late-term abortion):\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher\u2019s latest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/factsheet\/fb_induced_abortion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0(2017) specifies that two-thirds of abortions took place at eight weeks or earlier, and the graph below (2016) gives us some indication on the numbers of later abortions. Wade<\/em>? Wade and its companion case, Doe v. Bolton, have made it clear that abortions in all months of pregnancy for\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/page\/2\/?s=health+reasons+\">health\u00a0reasons<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0are legal.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHealth\u201d is an ambiguous term which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/caselaw.findlaw.com\/us-supreme-court\/410\/179.html\">may include a host of reasons<\/a>,\u00a0including familial, financial, and emotional health.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/va-governor-misleads-third-trimester-abortions\/\">Live Action News<\/a>\u00a0previously reported, &#8220;As defined by the Supreme Court\u2019s rulings in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/abortion.asp#ConstitutionRoe\"><em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/abortion.asp#ConstitutionDoe\"><em>Doe v. Bolton<\/em><\/a>, \u201chealth\u201d can mean \u201cphysical, emotional, psychological, familial\u201d&#8230;. These provisions\u2014which are rarely mentioned by media outlets\u2014provide broad leeway to perform abortions in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfactsdaily.com\/roe-v-wade-allows-abortions-for-all-9-months-of-pregnancy-not-just-the-first-3\/\">practically every case<\/a>&#8230;.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CFZDhM5Gwhk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;health exception&#8221;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The abortion industry has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/training-module-later-abortion-rarely-health\/\">admitted\u00a0<\/a>that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/teen-vogue-late-term-abortions-healthy\/\">abortion<\/a>\u00a0later in pregnancy is frequently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-worker-98-third-trimester-healthy\/\">committed<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionists-third-trimester-abortions-healthy-babies\/\">healthy babies<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In 2008,\u00a0during the Feminist Majority Foundation\u2019s annual Women\u2019s Leadership\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bSC0wrHOahg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conference<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionists-media-late-term-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">late-term<\/a> abortionist George Tiller\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bSC0wrHOahg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conceded<\/a>\u00a0that late-term abortions are legal under the\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/caselaw.findlaw.com\/us-supreme-court\/410\/179.html\"><em>Doe v. Bolton<\/em><\/a>\u00a0Supreme Court decisions: &#8220;<em>[\u2026W]e are able to use the wide definition and the full implementation of Roe v Wade decision <strong>which allows us to do post viability terminations of pregnancy<\/strong>. When read appropriately, the Roe versus Wade decision and the Bolton decisions says that, \u2018A physician may use his judgement in determining all factors of a woman\u2019s health, physical health, mental health, emotional health, family health, age of the patient, safety and well being.\u2019 That\u2019s the definition in the Roe v. Wade and the Bolton decision\u2026 The Bolton decision goes onto say that they understand that this allows wide latitude for the women\u2026&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>Tiller later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wpr_sN04j_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a>\u00a0that he had done abortions \u201cup to the day before delivery.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionists-media-late-term-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Late-term<\/a> abortionist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.drhern.com\/biography.pdf\">Warren Hern<\/a>, author of \u201cthe nation\u2019s most widely used textbook on abortion standards and procedures,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/abortion.asp#ConstitutionDoe\">declared<\/a>, \u201cI say every pregnancy carries a risk of death,\u201d and \u201cI will certify that any pregnancy is a threat to a woman\u2019s life and could cause grievous injury to her physical health.\u201d (Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/va-governor-misleads-third-trimester-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Action News<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>A teaching module published by an abortion training\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/innovating-education.org\/2018\/09\/the-patient-has-the-answer-pregnancy-options-counseling-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">program<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UCSF Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health<\/a>\u00a0reveals that physical health is\u00a0<strong>almost never given as a reason<\/strong>\u00a0for why a woman aborts after the first trimester.<\/li>\n<li>Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/unearthed-court-docs-planned-parenthood-considers-all-abortions-medically-necessary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented that,\u00a0according to recently unearthed testimony from a 2015\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/sites\/default\/files\/field_document\/08.27.15_decision_and_order_small.pdf\">court case<\/a>, Planned Parenthood considers <em>all<\/em> abortions &#8220;medically necessary.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The media knows that late-term abortions are often committed on healthy babies.
