The Mexican state of Oaxaca has become the second jurisdiction in Mexico to legalize<\/a> abortion up to 12 weeks gestation. Wednesday’s vote was 24<\/a> in favor and 10 against allowing abortion.<\/p>\n

The vote came just days after President Andres Manual Lopez Obrador — who hasn’t taken a firm stance in support of or against abortion, according to Reuters<\/a> — sent a bill to Congress to grant amnesty to women who are in jail for having illegal abortions. Apart from Mexico City, which legalized abortion up to 12 weeks back in 2007, abortion had been illegal across the country except in cases of rape or health of the mother (which is not actually medically necessary<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

On Saturday, abortion advocates marched in Mexico City to push for the complete decriminalization of abortion throughout the entire country. Some of the abortion supporters set fires<\/a> at the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral and the city Chamber of Commerce, while others vandalized monuments and buildings.<\/p>\n

While the Catholic church decried<\/a> the decriminalization of abortion, pro-abortion groups applauded the move. Mexico’s National Woman’s Institute tweeted, “Today is a historic day for Mexico and the feminist struggle.” And the United Nations Women’s program tweeted, “We join the celebration for this advance in women’s human rights and congratulate the women of Oaxaca.”<\/p>\n
