Wade"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>According to a new report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/induced-abortion-united-states\">published<\/a> by the Guttmacher Institute, abortion numbers dropped nationally by <em><strong>seven percent<\/strong><\/em> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/article_files\/abortion-incidence-us.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/factsheet\/fb_induced_abortion.pdf\">2017<\/a>,\u00a0from 926,200 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/article_files\/abortion-incidence-us.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a> to\u00a0<strong>862,320<\/strong> in 2017. Guttmacher, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s former &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-independent-is-guttmacher-from-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special affiliate<\/a>,&#8221; which publishes more <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/understanding-abortion-reporting-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comprehensive<\/a> abortion numbers than the Centers for Disease Control, says the\u00a0abortion <em>rate<\/em> has also dropped 8% (from 14.6 per 1,000 in 2014 to\u00a013.5 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 in 2017), to its lowest level since the Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion in all 50 states in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>The drop comes despite a two percent <em>increase<\/em> in the number of abortion facilities (Guttmacher counted 808 facilities providing abortions in 2017). The information confirms <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-abortions-decline-lowest-roe\/\">earlier<\/a>\u00a02015 CDC data (their most recent) indicating the lowest abortion numbers since\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>. Guttmacher reports that two-thirds of abortions occurred at eight weeks or earlier, and the graph below (2016) gives us some indication on the numbers of later abortions. Using Guttmacher&#8217;s reported abortion numbers for 2017, we discover that over <em>100,000 (100,891) abortions took place in the second trimester or later<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>8 weeks or less (65.4%) &#8211; 563,957 abortions<\/li>\n<li>9-10 weeks (14.7%) &#8211; 126,761 abortions<\/li>\n<li>11-12 weeks (8.2%) &#8211; 70,710\u00a0abortions<\/li>\n<li>13-15 weeks (6.3%) &#8211; 54,326\u00a0abortions<\/li>\n<li>16-20 weeks (4.1%) &#8211; 35,355\u00a0abortions<\/li>\n<li>At or greater than 21 weeks (1.3%) &#8211; 11,210\u00a0abortions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_210962\" style=\"width: 561px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-210962\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-210962\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Guttmcher-2016-abortion-by-trimester.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Guttmacher 2016 abortion by trimester (Graph: Guttmacher Institute) \" width=\"551\" height=\"617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Guttmcher-2016-abortion-by-trimester.jpg 551w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Guttmcher-2016-abortion-by-trimester-268x300.jpg 268w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Guttmcher-2016-abortion-by-trimester-500x560.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-210962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guttmacher 2016 abortion by trimester (Graph: Guttmacher Institute)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Abortions by Race:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher reports that, &#8220;<em>White patients accounted for 39% of abortion procedures in 2014, black patients for 28%, Hispanic patients for 25%, and patients of other races and ethnicities for 9%<\/em>.&#8221; Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-highest-percentage-black-women-2000\/\">here<\/a> for the CDC&#8217;s most recent data (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-highest-percentage-black-women-2000\/\">2016<\/a>) on the Black, Hispanic, and White abortion rates.<\/p>\n<p>Using the most recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/US#viewtop\">US Census Bureau<\/a>\u00a0data\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?dataView=0&amp;currentTimeframe=2&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\">estimates<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?dataView=0&amp;currentTimeframe=3&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\">published<\/a> by the Kaiser Family Foundation on race in the U.S., we estimate the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While Whites made up 62% of the population in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?dataView=0&amp;currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/factsheet\/fb_induced_abortion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guttmacher data<\/a> found that white women have 39% of abortions = 336,304 (estimated) annually.\u00a0Applying that percentage to 2017 numbers we estimated\u00a0336,304\u00a0abortions annually.<\/li>\n<li>While Blacks made up 12% of the population in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?dataView=0&amp;currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/factsheet\/fb_induced_abortion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guttmacher data<\/a>\u00a0found that Black women have 28% of abortions = 241,450 (estimated) annually. Applying that percentage to 2017 numbers we estimated\u00a0241,450\u00a0abortions annually.<\/li>\n<li>While Hispanics made up 17% of the population in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?dataView=0&amp;currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 2014<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/factsheet\/fb_induced_abortion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guttmacher data<\/a>\u00a0found that Hispanic women have 25% of abortions. Applying that percentage to 2017 numbers we estimated\u00a0215,580 abortions annually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Planned Parenthood National Abortion Market Share\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now that we have updated Guttmacher numbers, we can compare Planned Parenthood&#8217;s reported 2017 totals to Guttmacher&#8217;s. And what we find is that Planned Parenthood&#8217;s market share of abortions has steadily climbed from roughly 35% in 2014 to <strong>nearly 39%<\/strong> (38.5%) <strong>in 2017<\/strong>.\u00a0While the public is often led to believe that society needs Planned Parenthood &#8212; which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-abortion-chain-planned-parenthood-masquerades-as-a-health-care-provider\/\">claims to be<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-health-care-reinvention-plan-failed\/\">health care organization<\/a> &#8212;\u00a0to help prevent pregnancies and reduce abortions, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s\u00a0most recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/80\/d7\/80d7d7c7-977c-4036-9c61-b3801741b441\/190118-annualreport18-p01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017-2018 annual report<\/a> reveals that while taxpayer funding and abortions increased there in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-more-abortion-less-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017<\/a>, actual health care services offered there\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-more-abortion-less-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plummeted<\/a>.\u00a0Planned Parenthood\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/over-half-planned-parenthood-revenue-abortion\/\">estimated<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/over-half-planned-parenthood-revenue-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion revenue<\/a>\u00a0totaled $190 million\u00a0in just 2017.\u00a0 This has resulted in Planned Parenthood collected a whopping $244.8 million in excess revenue over spending in just one year, according to its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/71\/53\/7153464c-8f5d-4a26-bead-2a0dfe2b32ec\/20171229_ar16-17_p01_lowres.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017-2018<\/a>\u00a0annual report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are numbers declining?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/team-member\/michael-j-new\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Michael J. New<\/a>, visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science and Social Research at The Catholic University of America, as well as an Associate Scholar at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, gave Live Action News an indication why national abortion numbers are on the decline.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since the early 1980s, there has been a significant increase in the percentage of unintended pregnancies being carried to term, This shows that pro-life efforts to change hearts and minds, assist pregnant women, and pass protective laws, are all playing a key role in the long-term decline in the U.S abortion rate,&#8221; Dr. New told Live Action News.<\/p>\n<p>An analysis of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/article_files\/gpr2204119.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/team-member\/michael-j-new\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New<\/a>\u00a0also revealed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The report indicates that in 2017, the abortion rate was actually lower than what it was in 1973, the year of the Roe v. Wade decision. Overall, the abortion rate in 2017 is 13.5 abortions per thousand women of childbearing age.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. abortion rate has fallen by over 53 percent since it peaked in 1980. The Guttmacher report indicates that the U.S. abortion rate has fallen by 20 percent between 2011 and 2017.<\/li>\n<li>The recent decline is pretty widespread. The Guttmacher report indicates that the abortion rate has declined in 45 of the 50 states between 2011 and 2017.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>New notes in his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/guttmacher-report-shows-pro-life-progress-continues-as-u-s-abortion-rates-decline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/guttmacher-report-shows-pro-life-progress-continues-as-u-s-abortion-rates-decline\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1568930749657000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEgpkkgsRjQZaxnBCAeMpPZkNVUGA\">Charlotte\u00a0Lozier Institute<\/a>\u00a0analysis:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i>In their report, Guttmacher acknowledges that increased health and safety standards for abortion facilities are correlated with abortion rate declines in some states. However, they take considerable pains to argue that other pro-life policies have had little do to with the overall decline.\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0That said, the main problem with Guttmacher\u2019s analysis is they only consider data between 2011 and 2017 \u2014 a relatively short period of time.
