UPDATE, 9\/13\/19<\/strong>: Hours after four GOP senators sent their letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, condemning the social media giant’s biased “fact check” against Live Action, Facebook released a statement<\/a> saying it would temporarily restore the posts labeled “false news” and that the fact checking organization would be investigated for possibly violating its own policies against partisan fact checks. 9\/11\/19<\/strong>: This morning, United States Senators Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, Kevin Cramer, and Mike Braun issued a letter<\/a> to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, condemning the social media giant’s labeling of Live Action content as “false news” based on a fact check issued by two abortionists<\/a> who disagree with the claim that abortion — the intentional destruction of a human being in utero — is never medically necessary.<\/p>\n

The letter reads<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Yet <\/span>ag<\/span>ain<\/span>, <\/span>Facebook’<\/span>s <\/span>pattern <\/span>of <\/span>censorship <\/span>has <\/span>reared <\/span>its <\/span>ugly <\/span>head<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

On <\/span>August <\/span>30<\/span>, <\/span>2019<\/span>, <\/span>Facebook <\/span>notified <\/span>the <\/span>pro<\/span>–<\/span>life <\/span>organization <\/span>Live <\/span>Action <\/span>that <\/span>their <\/span>website <\/span>and <\/span>the <\/span>page <\/span>of <\/span>its <\/span>Founder <\/span>and <\/span>President<\/span>, <\/span>Lila <\/span>Rose<\/span>, <\/span>had <\/span>shared <\/span>content <\/span>that <\/span>had <\/span>been <\/span>“<\/span>fact<\/span>–<\/span>checked<\/span>” <\/span>a<\/span>n<\/span>d <\/span>rated <\/span>“<\/span>false<\/span>.<\/span>” <\/span>The <\/span>content <\/span>in <\/span>question <\/span>is <\/span>two <\/span>videos produced <\/span>by <\/span>Live <\/span>Ac<\/span>t<\/span>ion<\/span>, <\/span>one <\/span>featuring <\/span>Dr<\/span>. <\/span>Kendra <\/span>Kolb<\/span>, <\/span>a <\/span>board<\/span>–<\/span>certified <\/span>neonatologist<\/span>, <\/span>the <\/span>other <\/span>a <\/span>speech <\/span>by <\/span>Lila <\/span>Rose<\/span>, <\/span>both <\/span>claiming <\/span>that <\/span>abortion <\/span>is <\/span>not <\/span>medically <\/span>necessary<\/span>. <\/span>This <\/span>is <\/span>a <\/span>widely<\/span>–<\/span>held <\/span>view<\/span>, <\/span>one <\/span>shared <\/span>by <\/span>the <\/span>thousands <\/span>of <\/span>members <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>American <\/span>Association <\/span>of <\/span>Pro<\/span>–<\/span>Life <\/span>Obstretricians <\/span>& <\/span>Gynecologists<\/span>, <\/span>among <\/span>others<\/span>. <\/span>As <\/span>a <\/span>result <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>“<\/span>false<\/span>” <\/span>rating<\/span>, <\/span>Facebook <\/span>suppressed <\/span>Live <\/span>Action<\/span>‘<\/span>s <\/span>website <\/span>and <\/span>Lila <\/span>Rose<\/span>‘<\/span>s <\/span>Facebook <\/span>Page<\/span>, <\/span>prohibited <\/span>the <\/span>organization <\/span>from <\/span>advertising <\/span>and <\/span>promoting <\/span>its <\/span>content<\/span>, <\/span>and <\/span>notified <\/span>users <\/span>who <\/span>had <\/span>shared the <\/span>videos <\/span>that <\/span>they <\/span>had <\/span>shared <\/span>“<\/span>false <\/span>news<\/span>.<\/span>”\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This <\/span>so<\/span>–<\/span>called <\/span>“<\/span>fact<\/span>–<\/span>check<\/span>\u201d <\/span>came <\/span>as <\/span>part <\/span>of <\/span>a <\/span>Facebook <\/span>initiative <\/span>to <\/span>combat <\/span>false <\/span>news <\/span>involving <\/span>partnerships <\/span>with <\/span>groups <\/span>like <\/span>The <\/span>Associated Press<\/span>, <\/span>Factcheck<\/span>.<\/span>org<\/span>, <\/span>P<\/span>o<\/span>litiFact<\/span>, <\/span>and <\/span>others<\/span>. <\/span>You <\/span>claim <\/span>that <\/span>your <\/span>fact<\/span>–<\/span>checkers <\/span>are <\/span>“<\/span>certified<\/span>” <\/span>through <\/span>the <\/span>“<\/span>non<\/span>–<\/span>partisan<\/span>” <\/span>International <\/span>Fact<\/span>–<\/span>Checking <\/span>Network (<\/span>IFCN<\/span>)<\/span>. <\/span>Listed <\/span>first <\/span>among <\/span>the <\/span>IFCN<\/span>‘<\/span>s <\/span>“<\/span>Code <\/span>of <\/span>Principles<\/span>” <\/span>is <\/span>“<\/span>A <\/span>commitment <\/span>to <\/span>Nonpartisanship <\/span>and <\/span>Fairness” <\/span>that <\/span>requires <\/span>“<\/span>signatories <\/span>do <\/span>not <\/span>advocate <\/span>or <\/span>take <\/span>policy <\/span>positions <\/span>on <\/span>the <\/span>issues <\/span>they <\/span>fact<\/span>–<\/span>check<\/span>.<\/span>“<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This code of principles was not followed<\/a> for this particular “fact check,” as the abortionists have a strikingly clear bias against pro-life groups like Live Action, and advocate for abortion openly. The letter<\/a> continues:<\/p>\n

But <\/span>Facebook<\/span>‘<\/span>s <\/span>“<\/span>independent <\/span>fact <\/span>check<\/span>” <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Live <\/span>Action <\/span>videos <\/span>was <\/span>performed <\/span>by <\/span>two <\/span>pro<\/span>–<\/span>abortion <\/span>activists <\/span>with <\/span>significant <\/span>ties <\/span>to <\/span>abortion<\/span>–<\/span>rights <\/span>advocacy <\/span>organizations<\/span>, <\/span>both <\/span>of <\/span>whom <\/span>are <\/span>paid <\/span>to <\/span>perform <\/span>abortions<\/span>. <\/span>Daniel <\/span>Grossman <\/span>sits <\/span>on <\/span>the <\/span>board <\/span>of <\/span>NARAL <\/span>Pro <\/span>Choice <\/span>America <\/span>Foundation <\/span>and <\/span>has <\/span>a <\/span>history <\/span>of <\/span>testifying <\/span>in <\/span>favor <\/span>of <\/span>Planned <\/span>Parenthood<\/span>. <\/span>Robyn <\/span>Schickler <\/span>is <\/span>a <\/span>Fellow <\/span>with the <\/span>pro<\/span>–<\/span>abortion <\/span>advocacy <\/span>grou<\/span>p <\/span>Physicians <\/span>for <\/span>Reproducive <\/span>Health<\/span>. <\/span>That <\/span>advocacy <\/span>is <\/span>on <\/span>full <\/span>display <\/span>in <\/span>her <\/span>“<\/span>fact <\/span>check<\/span>\u201d <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Live <\/span>Action <\/span>video<\/span>, <\/span>in <\/span>which <\/span>Schickler <\/span>gratuitously <\/span>includes <\/span>the <\/span>statement<\/span>: <\/span>“<\/span>We <\/span>should <\/span>remember <\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>while <\/span>these <\/span>medical <\/span>reasons <\/span>for <\/span>abortion <\/span>are <\/span>very <\/span>serious<\/span>, <\/span>all <\/span>reasons <\/span>for <\/span>deciding <\/span>to <\/span>seek <\/span>abortion <\/span>care <\/span>are <\/span>valid<\/span>; <\/span>no <\/span>one <\/span>reason <\/span>is <\/span>better <\/span>than <\/span>another<\/span>.<\/span>”\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

No <\/span>reasonable <\/span>person <\/span>would <\/span>describe <\/span>Grossman <\/span>or <\/span>Schickler <\/span>as <\/span>neutral <\/span>or <\/span>objective <\/span>when <\/span>it <\/span>comes <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>issue <\/span>of <\/span>abortion<\/span>, <\/span>yet <\/span>Facebook <\/span>relied on <\/span>their <\/span>rating <\/span>to <\/span>suppress <\/span>and <\/span>censor <\/span>a <\/span>pro<\/span>–<\/span>life <\/span>organization <\/span>with <\/span>more <\/span>than <\/span>3 <\/span>million <\/span>followers<\/span>. <\/span>These <\/span>are <\/span>clear <\/span>violations <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>IFCN <\/span>principle <\/span>and <\/span>of <\/span>Facebook<\/span>‘<\/span>s <\/span>supposed <\/span>commitment <\/span>to <\/span>non<\/span>–<\/span>partisanship<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Live Action has exposed the backgrounds of these two abortionists here<\/a>. The Senators sum up:<\/p>\n

Your <\/span>company<\/span>, <\/span>like <\/span>Twitter<\/span>, <\/span>Google<\/span>, <\/span>Pinterest <\/span>and <\/span>so <\/span>many <\/span>other <\/span>major <\/span>Silicon <\/span>Valley <\/span>social <\/span>media <\/span>firms<\/span>, <\/span>has <\/span>been <\/span>repeatedly <\/span>confronted <\/span>with <\/span>evidence <\/span>of <\/span>bias <\/span>against <\/span>those <\/span>with <\/span>conservative <\/span>viewpoints<\/span>, <\/span>especially <\/span>on <\/span>the <\/span>issue <\/span>of <\/span>abortion<\/span>. <\/span>And <\/span>in <\/span>response <\/span>you <\/span>have <\/span>repeatedly <\/span>insisted <\/span>that <\/span>these <\/span>numerous <\/span>incidents <\/span>of <\/span>discrimination<\/span>, <\/span>censorship<\/span>, <\/span>and <\/span>suppression <\/span>of <\/span>speech <\/span>are <\/span>merely <\/span>glitches<\/span>, <\/span>not <\/span>evidence <\/span>of <\/span>systemic <\/span>bias<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

If <\/span>this <\/span>isn<\/span>‘<\/span>t <\/span>bias<\/span>, <\/span>what <\/span>is<\/span>? <\/span>The <\/span>only <\/span>thing <\/span>more <\/span>astonishing <\/span>than <\/span>your <\/span>claim <\/span>to <\/span>nonpartisanship <\/span>is <\/span>your <\/span>complete <\/span>failure <\/span>to <\/span>back <\/span>that <\/span>claim <\/span>with <\/span>proof<\/span>. <\/span>Facebook <\/span>should <\/span>immediately <\/span>issue <\/span>a <\/span>correction<\/span>, <\/span>remove <\/span>any <\/span>restrictions <\/span>placed <\/span>on <\/span>the <\/span>pages <\/span>of <\/span>Live <\/span>A<\/span>ction <\/span>and Lila <\/span>Rose<\/span>, <\/span>and <\/span>submit <\/span>to <\/span>an <\/span>external <\/span>audit<\/span>. <\/span>The <\/span>audit should <\/span>be <\/span>real <\/span>and <\/span>meaningful<\/span>, <\/span>not <\/span>like <\/span>last <\/span>month<\/span>‘<\/span>s <\/span>“<\/span>audit<\/span>\u201d <\/span>that <\/span>was <\/span>nothing <\/span>more <\/span>than a <\/span>summary <\/span>of <\/span>complaints <\/span>against <\/span>Facebook <\/span>and <\/span>its <\/span>responses<\/span>. <\/span>Facebook <\/span>must<\/span>, <\/span>at <\/span>minimum<\/span>, <\/span>allow <\/span>an <\/span>external <\/span>auditor <\/span>acces<\/span>s <\/span>to <\/span>internal <\/span>Facebook <\/span>documents <\/span>a<\/span>n<\/span>d <\/span>procedures <\/span>a<\/span>n<\/span>d <\/span>allow <\/span>an <\/span>auditor <\/span>to <\/span>question <\/span>employees <\/span>and <\/span>senior officials <\/span>at <\/span>the <\/span>company<\/span>. <\/span>I <\/span>look <\/span>forward <\/span>to <\/span>your <\/span>response<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Live Action founder and president Lila Rose issued the following statement in response:<\/p>\n

Thank you to Sens. Hawley, Cramer, Cruz, and Braun for their leadership in condemning Facebook\u2019s decision to make two abortionists the arbiters of the national debate on abortion. Thousands of medical professionals hold the position that abortion \u2013 the intentional and direct killing of a child in the womb \u2013 is never medically necessary and that the medical community should see both mother and child as patients. Facebook\u2019s attack on Live Action and me is an attack on the entire pro-life community. The platform should be a place for the free exchange of ideas, not one where only pro-abortion arguments are allowed. Live Action has asked Facebook to rectify this situation by rescinding their fact-check, sending a new notification to all users about the change, and apologizing, as well as reforming their \u201cfact-check\u201d process.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
